I like this whiskey form Montana. It's new and expressive. No complexity, just a slap in your face. Tnx Gerard for letting me taste this whiskey.
    • Nose
Starts spirity. Lots of sandalwood. Resinous. Forrest fruits. Vanilla at the background. Leathery notes. Some soap.
    • Taste
Very hot and spicy! Chilli, clove and caraway. Barbecue sauce. Toasted oak. Tanninnes all the way. Coffee.  Menthol.
    • Finish
Long. Pine. New oak. Hickory. Spearmint.

A very good 3yo american single malt. I would recommend buying this one!
    • Nose

Quite bourbonlike with a lot of dark spices, caramel and sweet vanilla. there is also a hint of freshness in here, like menthol. Withwater some flower notes show up!
    • Taste
      88 88
Sweet vanilla, maplesyrup, very warm caramel, fudge and cream. A very flavourfull whiskey!
With water: milder but still very flavoursome.
    • Finish
      86 86
For a 3 year old very long. Again dark spices, warm caramel and very sweet.
With water: More flower notes and a tad soapy.

Yes Scotch whiskey rules, but an occasional side step is allowed and for sure does not hurt. This whiskey was awarded an honorable 3rd place (at least by me) in a line up of non Scotch whiskey at a tasting I organized with my fiends.

Normally I do not like to pay 50+ Euro for a 4 year old single malt, but this one is worth it. I'll put it on my wish-list.
    • Nose
Sweetness all over. Spicy, dark fruit, chocolate and burned caramel.
    • Taste
This one needs some water. For a 4 year old single malt from the USA, it is surprisingly matured. Thick oily taste. Spicy again. BBQ sauce as mentioned correctly here below.
    • Finish
Long and warm finish. Spices remain in the throat long before they finally die-out.

Wow this is big a surpise! Normally I’m not that into young and barely aged whiskey but this is actually very good, excellent I’d even say! It’s impressive to notice what virgin oak does in such a short maturation.
    • Nose
This one aged and benefited very well from it’s maturation in virgin oak. Beautiful hints of fresh oak, woodspice, dried herbs such as parsley and oregano. Sweet and salty. Alcohol is still quite strong so lets give it a few drops. It can handle a decent amount of water. It gets more balanced and gives hints of dried grass. Herbal hints come through better without the alcoholic fume.
    • Taste
Creamy, spicy and warm. Chili peppers, peach, and woodspice. Less spicy without water, more woody en herbal. Peach is a little more hidden now. Slightly malty.
    • Finish
Sharp at first but a little later beautiful mild spices, dried herbs, vanilla and honey. There is also a trace of cinnamon. Spices get a little more sharp actually when water is added.

Impressive stuff at a reasonable price! Would recommend buying a bottle if you can! It’s really something different. Not your everyday whiskey. I guess it’s not a beginners dram. It’s Quite challenging.

    Cowboys

RoughStock is distilled in Bozeman, Montana. It is one of many craft distilleries that have sprouted up in recent years. They make their whiskey in a column still. It is the first distillery in Montana in over 100 years. Their Black Label is marketed as a ‘Western Style’ whiskey. Well, Montana is a state of Cowboys, after all. This single cask yielded a whiskey at a strength of 59,8% ABV. Oh, lest I foget: this is a single malt!

Lovely nose on dried plants, caramel, toffee, unbaked bread, dark fruit, chocolate, burnt pine needles and salted butter. It takes some getting used to, but in the end, I quite like this. If you leave it to breathe for a while, it becomes more creamy and even a bit umami.

Very round and rich on the palate, but also quite spicy (ginger, cinnamon and loads of peppers!). After the sharp arrival it quickly quiets down and becomes soft and sweet. But the first sip is rather bitter, almost astringent, on toasted oak and pine needles. Then the fruit kicks in. Apples and oranges, but also dried pineapple. Burnt sugar, candied peel of blood oranges. Quite nice.

The finish is very long, dark and sweet. After two shots, you feel the need for a large glass of water.

Sturdy fellow. Not for boys, only cowboys. Around 80 EUR in my neck of the woods.

Tasted blind. Orange nose and pancake batter. Alcoholic and sweet mouth on orange. Long finish on alcoholic power, menthol and tannins. Would have deserved a dilution.
