Elegant, if somewhat muted nose. Strong tannins on the palate and on the finish. A reasonable whisky, of course much too expensive for what's on offer these days.

A small dash of water was essential for me here, because it not only allowed the rich fruit to develop, but also the alcohol was better integrated and the barrel wood made a more pleasing figure. A very successful Mosstowie! For the full review, go here: https://keinehalbendrinks.de/2022/12/04/relicts-of-mosstowie/

Mosstowie 1979 -2013, 34 years, 51.5% alc. Bottler: van Wees (The Ultimate). Expansion: Bourbon cask No. 1355 (barrel)

Nose: Buttery soft, fruity and floral. I find soft malt tones, some pear and apple, a hint of coconut and hay. There is also a relatively clear herbal note with mint and lemongrass, some lemon balm and anise. Then it becomes fruitier and slightly spicy again, gooseberries, lemon tart, sugar cake and honey, some green tea with pepper rounds it off.

Palate: Again very sweet and fruity at the beginning, some apple and pear, a little tangerine and various grapes, then more sour with a tendency to various citrus fruits. The Mosstowie builds up quite strongly and intensively, the oak is quite juicy and slightly bitter. I taste sweet liquorice, aniseed and a spicy mixture of nutmeg and cinnamon.

Finish: Rather long, continues the previous impressions well, develops a slight dryness towards the end. A little marzipan, mint tea with a slice of lemon, salted pistachios and cinnamon.

Conclusion: Beautiful whisky, albeit quite interwoven on the nose and difficult to differentiate, a really nice barrel. 89/100 points (2022)

  8. Calmar scored this whisky 86 points Connoisseur

It is a very softened tongue, the taste / finish simply sinks in an oak - neither the base nor the bourbon can be disassembled, the fragrance is rich and deep, but the components are very strange and do not form a single picture, breaking up into disorderly pieces. Something confectionery, vanilla and flower breaks out from under the oak tree, but does not change the overall picture.
    • Nose
Open, the first nose - mineral confectionery; vanilla, lemon confiture, rancid butter, boiled egg, hydrogen sulphide tones; carpentry workshop, solvent, wet grindstone, oily metal shavings, radish.
    • Taste
Dense, sharp, astringent bitter oak, a little black pepper, lemon rind, oak bitterness dominates, clogs the weaker components.
    • Finish
Spicy, warming, oak bitterness softened with sweet homemade pastilla, burnt crackers, beer bitterness, lemon zest, vanilla.

Take your time with this old one.
    • Nose
Floral tones, green tea, old books, dust, earthy tones, but also fruit like apples, bananas, pear, grapes, honey, all kind of sweetness. Complex.
    • Taste
Sweet: fruity balanced, peppery, copper nots, mint, green apples, lot of sweetness, cinnamon, Complex.
    • Finish
Medium long, it comes all together , Complex.

As this is my first Mosstowie I tasted I can’t really comment on the distillery characters. This whisky really needs some time to open up, as at the start it comes through as quite chemical and stale. But after a while (30 minutes in the glass) that seems to fade and the fruits become more dominant. The best part of this whisky, for me, is the nose. The balance of aromas is simply great. But the palate and especially the finish of this whisky is underwhelming. Maybe my expectations where to high for this old dram, who knows.
All in all a interesting whisky to taste but a bit underwhelming.
    • Nose
A very subtle, floral, sweet and well balanced whisky with aromas of clear copper tones, floral tones (buttercups, chamomile and dandelions), green tea, dusty tones, damp cellar, old books, earthy tones, red apple, banana peels, pear, grapes, acacia honey, maple syrup, candied ginger, white pepper, spearmint, butter candy (botersnoepjes), red current jam, gooseberries, icing sugar, pastry, hint of aniseeds and subtle vanilla.
    • Taste
A sweet, fruity and well balanced whisky with aromas of white pepper, copper, licqorice root, aniseeds, spearmint, green apple, unripe banana, pear, grapes, fresh apricots, nectarines, hay, grass, olive oil, green tea, slightly sour tobacco tone, grape seeds, grape skins, subtle cinnamon, apple pie and a hint of oak.
    • Finish
A medium long and slightly one-dimensional finish with aromas of grape seeds, icing sugar, hint of vanilla, hint of cinnamon and a strong long lasting copper tone.
