Dense, very dense and full, without unnecessary spices, bitterness, quite harmonious, rounded.

Strong sherry, strong, intense, with everything that goes with it. Great whisky, more power than elegance, but it does not matter.

    • Nose
Sweet Sherry, deep enough and generous. Jam of blackberries, fruits cooked in profusion, leather ...
    • Taste
Powerful, dynamic, juicy! Marmalade of black fruits, properly sweetened. Sweet spices.
    • Finish
Moderate spices. A hint of sulfur. Great consistency from end to end.

In my opinion casknr. 72323 and 105092 are the best of all Ultimate Longmorns.

I love all Longmorn Whiskys from The Ultimate. I myself have 1 to 3 bottles of each cask and there are 8 different barrels. The Cask Strength Longmorn and Tamdhu are so far one of my favorites!

Compared this one with https://www.whiskybase.com/whisky/52033/longmorn-1996-vw. The expression of this note is certainly darker. It's less on sweet aroma's, and it's spicier and it has more roasted, earthy aromas. It's a bit out of balance in the finish.
    • Nose
Walnut, date and raisin from the Oloroso sherry. Then, there is a lot of oak actually. It releases impressions of oak, polished furniture, cinnamon and a tiny bit of vanilla. Next to that, there is coffee, dark chocolate, a bit of beefy old leather and eucalyptus.
    • Taste
Quity nutty and spicy, with walnut, clove, nutmeg, cinnamon and pepper. Behind that, there is mon cheri, dark chocolate, espresso, and a hint of dried fruit only. It's very earthy and dark.
    • Finish
Spicy, woody and quite bitter. The oak, pepper, clove and dark chocolate overpower the other elements such as date, eucalyptus, and raisin.

This longmorn is initially characterized by fruity sherry, with the sherry in the course of tasting in the direction of spicy and wood-dominated sherry. Fuel and spicy, subtly spicy and yet fruity on the nose. Another delicious longmorn by van Wees. Delicious!
    • Nose
Intense and spicy Sherry shows immediately after pouring its great aroma. Roasted flavors and menthol eucalyptus rise from the dark berries while the sherry becomes slightly dirty and greasy. Tough and creamy streaks stick to the glass wall, plum jam mixes with a hint of mint. Old and wet wood becomes slightly musty, a subtle leather touch arises.
    • Taste
At the first sip, roasted flavors and plum jam appear briefly, then the spicy and intensive wood is getting sharper. A light pinch of pepper briefly heats up the palate. Alcoholic sharpness and bitter wood are added, an intense dark chocolate note sinks into sharpness. Freshly ground espresso powder spreads in the mouth. Sharpness and bitter aromas now dominate the taste.
    • Finish
Subtle sharpness and a hint of sulfur start the finish. The roasted aromas of the taste combine with the espresso note, fruity and spicy, the finish gives off its intense aroma.

    • Nose
Sherry, raisins, dark dried fruits. Some eucalyptus and mint. Wet old wood.
    • Taste
Slight sharpness. Plums, cloves, cinnamon. Fir honey and liquorice.

  17. Torfding scored this whisky 87 points Expert Senior

A strong whisky, which takes some time in the glass. It is not particularly complex, but rather direct and with fairly clear aromas, but the alcoholic effect disturbs the overall impression a little bit (with a few drops of water it gets better, but the whisky itself loses it).
    • Nose
an alcoholic note, but it will disappear over time; intense, clearly dry sherry, prunes, cherry, overripe fruits, a hint of maggic herb and fresh sawdust; with a few drops of water, the long-grain becomes a little sweeter and gets notes of fresh fruit
    • Taste
Dried fruits with a heavy, warm sweetness, wood, sherry, dark chocolate, spicy and strong with an alcoholic pungency and a hint of coffee
    • Finish
medium, longer with water, dry sherry

Be careful not to add too much water because only a few drops is needed, any more kills it.

With water it is still nicely sherried though the finish is shorter.
    • Nose
Not particularly expressive, initially but then the rich smell of prunes, chocolate, figs, coffee and over ripe berries come in.
    • Taste
Spirity and rich again on prunes and ripe plum mixed in with a little bitterness on the tongue
    • Finish
Medium length and finishes sweet at the back of the palate.

  20. Rom scored this whisky 89 points Expert Junior

Nose wax, raisins, honey, dark chocolate, toasted notes, cloves. Thick and lining, with soft tannin. Final very long and warming. Good rich Sherry.

  21. RL_whisky scored this whisky 85 points Connoisseur

Dried fruits, sweats, toffee, and hints of apples, leather, vanilla and chocolate. Towards spicy, intense, not very drying. With water a bit less.

Not a fan of the nose as it is, would probably ask for a few months of aeration in the bottle, but the mouth is top.
    • Nose
A lot of alcohol but it dissipates partially with aeration. Here we have a sherry very marked by red fruits and fruits with alcohol, including macerated cherries. There are also dried fruits, especially raisins, and some citrus notes (orange juice) welcome. In any case, it is very fresh but the alcohol is still a little too present for my taste.
    • Taste
There it is much better. Attack rather sweet. Then it evolves on a sherry marked by dried fruits and spices: very clear notes of cinnamon and especially nutmeg. Also some tobacco and noble wood.
    • Finish
Very long on brown sugar and nutmeg (first time it seems so obvious).

  23. Toffie76 scored this whisky 88 points Expert Senior

A whisky that sticks to the body. Texture difficult, thick.
    • Nose
Taking, very fruity, bitter orange peel. Elderberry, blackcurrant, marzipan, resin.
    • Taste
Mouth powerful, taking. Hard at startup, alcohol in power followed by a spicy attack. Malted, sweet (cane, barley) rum.
    • Finish
      Woody, bitterness. Long enough.

  24. Bishlouk scored this whisky 89 points Connoisseur

Powerful, robust, tasty, it sticks in the mouth. Yum. (note made as part of a F2F of the 7 Longmorn 1996 The Ultimate)
    • Nose
Powerful, woody, very fruity on candied red fruits and very cooked (cherry, blackcurrant). A millipoil of resin and dust.
    • Taste
A frank attack, then it settles on the liquid brown sugar, the sweet spices, a pinch of pepper and the black fruits (blackcurrant, plum).
    • Finish
Long, slightly dry and peppery. Black fruits persist.

  25. Ahab scored this whisky 84 points Member Senior

Intense, sherry-shaped whisky, which you have to spend your time in the glass. A straightforward, less complex sherry whisky. A thoroughly pleasant companion, which does not require too much attention. Maybe matching a mild-spicy cigar.
    • Nose
first lightly alcoholic, sweet sherry, prunes
    • Taste
alcoholic spicy, dry sherry, dark chocolate, a tiny trace of sulfur
    • Finish
      medium-length, dry, sherry-shaped finish

  26. metropolis13 scored this whisky 88 points Expert Senior

Here we do not do in the brain but rather in the effective!
Be careful though, it's a bit like tasting a caramel stuffed with chilli, despite his nose a bit bitterly there's clearly character inside!
    • Nose
Very expressive and surprisingly sweet if I did not smell a hint of alcohol I could have thought that I was dipped over a pan caramel browning!
There are also nice notes of candied plums and bitter dark chocolate.
With aeration it becomes even more precise with old leather and rolling tobacco.
    • Taste
Very round again with a lot of sugar (candied fruits / caramel) and a lot of fresh wood spices and tobacco, it's very powerful (even a bit too dry) it looks like everything is "Über" in this malt !

With water it is less spicy, less intense and ultimately less pleasant.
    • Finish
Once swallowed the alcohol leaves a little mark and a wave of heat is attenuating the spices before greedy notes of coffee liquor and caramel come haunt our palate with a crazy desire to plunge into his glass!

Very good sherry. Mouth more "green" and young, but not unpleasant. I do not like dry sherry too much, but this one is very well done.
    • Nose
Plenty of prune, cooked fruit, plum brandy. It's pretty "heavy sherry".
    • Taste
Very sweet and greedy in first impression. Prune, spices, chocolate, caramel. Then more dry, bitter cocoa, hazelnuts, vegetal notes. With water, more creamy and more caramel.
    • Finish
Long range, sugar, dried fruits, spices, wood.

  29. KayMeertens scored this whisky 88 points Connoisseur

I have several Longmorns from this series, and from all of them this one makes the fruitiest and youngest impression. It also contains a good amount of spice, but less of that thick treacly character that some other casks (e.g. 72319) have.
    • Nose
Sherry, raisin, orange, dried apricot, sugar candy, plum, mocha, caramel, apple syrup and marshmallow.
    • Taste
Sherry, orange, raisins, mocha, dates, dark cherries, eucalyptus, cinnamon, nutmeg and marshmallow.
    • Finish
Cherries, plums, mocha, raisins and nutmeg.

  30. Brave Jester scored this whisky 89 points Expert Senior

Really nice and quite drinkable neat for this % of 57,5.

But to me this is a bit one dimentional, maybe due to the long maturation?

I prefer both the Aberlour Abunagh ( batch 39 ) and the Glendronach 2002 at 50% above this but it is still a great sherried whisky full of flavours

  31. tomy63 scored this whisky 88 points Expert Senior

Very good sherry, not a stunning complexity, but a great ratio q / p.
    • Nose
very sherry, a little sweet, chocolate, lots of dried fruits, candied oranges, currants, cooked plums too. Alcohol well integrated for a whisky quite young at 57%.
    • Taste
powerful, alcohol well integrated yet, we find the aromas of the nose, a side Glendro Revival in a little sweeter. With water, the whisky becomes drier, more dried fruit, less chocolate, a little wood on the other hand.
    • Finish
very good length, even more dried fruit, a little spice too.

I can rate this whisky between 87 and 91 depending on my mood.
