Quite tasty for the young age. I would like it to be “fatter” in places and the peat is still quite reserved. Still delicious!

It's no big secret that Kilchoman can do young whisky, but I'm still amazed and amazed at HOW well they do young whisky. This 3rd edition already comes up with an astonishing depth that one looks in vain for in youthful bottlings from many other Islay distilleries (I'm thinking, for example, of a 5-year-old Ardbeg...). Since I have the 11th edition of 2021 open right now, I poured myself a comparison dram right away: the 2021 comes across as softer and creamier on the tongue and then has a little more substance, but if you consider that between the two whiskys are around eight (!) years old, I feel confirmed in my assumption that Kilchoman is basically already finished whisky, even when bottled young. 87/100 3rd edition, 89/100 11th edition.
    • Nose
Very mildly smoky, hardly a trace of youth, no: not a trace. Instead, spicy smoked ham, refreshing sea spray, sun-dried seaweed, lemon juice, a fine note of spice.
    • Taste
More peat smoke on the tongue than on the nose, but again it shows that Kilchoman is crafting an incredibly good young whisky: no green twigs, no metallic notes, no pear, instead the aromas of a mature Islay smoker with seaweed, smoked ham, Lime and lemon juice, grapefruit, cocoa powder and espresso beans.
    • Finish
Doesn't collapse in the finish either, but confidently unwinds its taste program up to the actually medium-length end.

Smoke but with red fruits. It's for the acid side.
Finish : explosion of the smoke and disappear to a soft smoke

  4. spnimcco scored this whisky 94 points Expert Senior

A little more mature than its predecessor, beautifully harmonious

  5. Dris scored this whisky 86 points Connoisseur

Interesting expression. The modestly peated malt gives the impression of a more mature malt, and definitely helps the overall balance. Piney smokiness, dry malty notes and crisp american oak maturation.

The nose is the best and individual part, taste and finish are thin. But in sum it's pleasant.

the nose was far better than the rest but finally this is very young and anything but boring
    85/100
    • Nose
very  smoky, tarry, sooty with a herbal influence. sweet grapefruit (I know...), some mango and passion fruits. somewhere between laphroaig and bowmore. very fresh, I like that nose a lot!
    • Taste
briny and not as smoky as the nose suggests. medium sweet with a slightly sharp attack.
it´s a pity that the tropical fruits do not show on the palate.
    • Finish
      medium to long, medium sweet,

    Enthusiasm 3/5
    • Nose
Marked peat that becomes frankly vegetal. With a little water, richer and warmer.
    • Taste
Very frank attack. Very spicy, very salty. With water, a little vanilla.
    • Finish
A little brutal. Long and peaty. With water, softer and vanilla.

They know very well what they are doing at Kilchoman!
    • Nose
A fresh wood fire, malt sugars, hay and wood are the first things that fly in. Followed by Light medicinal tones, salty and fresh. He smells young and sharp. He is reminiscent of a Danish New Spirit (Fary Lochan New Made) that I once tasted. This is smoked with nettle smoke.
    • Taste
The smoke explodes in the mouth and at first dominates everything. Later, soft salty and sweet fruit tones also come through
    • Finish
A long sweet and smoky aftertaste.

I admit it without further ado: In Kilchoman I'm just shot!
    • Nose
Everything is back: full-bodied ashes, peaty, figs, pears, citrus fruits, a light, metallic echo, a pinch of salt, a little bit of menthol. Longings are evoked, because one could easily forget whether to enjoy the vapors and contemplate it, to take a sip!
    • Taste
Slightly oily, all the ingredients mentioned above roll over the tongue.
    • Finish
After a short rearing of the fruit parts, they mate with the likewise exploding ash and the peat smoke, as well as a slight metallic clinking. The fruit components diminish, but still leave the other slightly sugary underlaid. The overall composition remains pleasantly warming in the palate for a long time.

  23. Hansi scored this whisky 85 points Expert Senior

Interesting nose of relatively subtle peat smoke and fruity notes, looks fresh and light. The bitterness at the end bothers something, the youth owed slightly metallic notes less.
    • Nose
Subtle peat smoke nose, then lots of sweetness, strawberry (!), Cooked yellow fruit, vanilla, roasted malt, very fresh, slightly citrus, slightly pungent and metallic
    • Taste
Quite a lot of peat smoke, more than in the aroma, then yellow fruits, vanilla, but also bitter spice notes
    • Finish
Medium long, smoky-dry, quite bitter and a little bit sprightly

Boiled sweets dominate the nose when undiluted (sherbet lemons?). A couple of drops of water brought out loads of extra complexity: oat biscuits, cola cubes, pear drops, vanilla and freshly cut hay are all in there, supported beautifully by a waft of soft peat smoke. Instantly recognisable as a Kilchoman...lovely stuff! Rather more straightforward on the palate, where the peat dominates much more, albeit with the boiled sweets continuing from the nose and some spicy (even chilli-like) elements coming through on the back of the tongue. Long, warming finish. I really enjoyed this dram. It is firmly rooted in the Kilchoman `style`. Perhaps a touch pricey for such a young whisky, but undoubtedly a very high quality product!

  29. granella2003 scored this whisky 85 points Connoisseur

    • Nose
Floral and delicate with a mix of soft fruits and pear drops
    • Taste
The peat smoke explodes in the mouth with sweet soft mixed fruit very evident
    • Finish
A long sweet sway finish with a soft peaty aftertaste
