SMWS AT Summer 2003 list:
Mature calvados and faded varnish
The 'other' distillery in Glenlivet was opened in 1973 and was awarded for its architecture. At first she used her 'Appelation' but abandoned it a few years ago. The whisky has never been bottled by the owner, Chivas Glenlivet, so this is a rare opportunity. The color is a wonderfully intense amber brown, like polished mahogany, and the first impression on the nose is simply 'intense'. Soon, notes of baked apples peel out - very ripe calvados or baked apples, sprinkled with melted sugar. Then burned sugar and honey. Undiluted it reminds at this stage of brown butter toast, lightly burned, coated with thin honey ... With water appears a venerable tenderness: sweet vanilla fudge, fresh pears, faded boat paint. The taste starts pleasantly sweet, dries easily, with a long finish and lingering honey strips. Delicious.
