Laphroaig at it´s best, the 18 Y imho represents the character of the distilery like no other bottling, except the CS. The 18 years in the cask took a bit of the alcohol edge and therefore added some nice compexity. Smoke, iodine, salt, wood and phenol, an amazing dram. Get it while you can

  2. Othorion scored this whisky 90 points Expert Senior

    Simply a top whisky!
    • Nose
Subtle smoke, slightly medically but more towards campfire, also bacon, sweet orange, fruity and fresh, lemon juice, salty sea breeze, red apples, vanilla
    • Taste
full and creamy, salivation, spicy nicely integrated smoke, apple compote, lime, vanilla, caramelised sugar, dark chocolate, leather, getting dry harmoniously, simply great!
    • Finish
long, smoky, oily, dry, sweetened coffee and leather

  3. Calmar scored this whisky 90 points Connoisseur

Good whisky, dense, saturated, smoke and peat after 18 years of aging gradually fade away, harmoniously merging and enriching with the derivatives of the barrel (and all the time it seems that there was no sherry here, although purely bourbon aging), this is an adult malt, without youthful excesses and inappropriate maximalism.
    • Nose
Discreet, dry, peat, lemon peel, dry boards, old leather goods, dark chocolate, creamy notes, boiled condensed milk, toffee, mineral shades - ash, stone chips; light medical motives.
    • Taste
Soft, rich, lemon peel, charred branches, peat, charcoal, sticky mineral shades, leather goods, dark chocolate, toffee, ash, metallic acidity.
    • Finish
Spicy, invigorating, peat, light smoke, ash, sour metal, cola, coffee, dark chocolate, oak, toffee.

  4. Donwaldorf scored this whisky 87 points Expert Senior

A Laph right in his boots, a classic French GDS. He was a very good Q / P, no more now.
    It lacks complexity elsewhere.
    • Nose
A carnivorous peat, on the smoking of meat or fish. There is salt and this medicinal side of Laphroaig. A nice nose.
    • Taste
Light attack, it rises crescendo during the tasting.
Always on peat oil, smoking fish. Spices make their appearance and a vegetal side.
    • Finish
Average length on cocoa, gourmet and vanilla peat. There is also this side leather that I did not have before but that is very pleasant.

Last orders at the Whisky squad bar.
N: Soft yet deep putty<peat. It’s so refreshing to nose aged peat malt over the swathes of young smokers crashing onto the market these days. It's like the difference between virgin and second fill for casks, i.e. significant. That age [18 years+], softens the phenols and can allow a deeper, more complex alchemy to ensue.
T: Soft, fruity, vegetal, squidgy yumminess.
F: A sweet>bitter=sour finish with wisps of a mechanics tool cupboard.
C: Ideal final dram, probably the best of the night. Loved the softness despite the ample [even generous] 48% abv.

    Scores a B[+]

A classic that shows the complexity and balance of mature Laphroaigs
    • Nose
Beautiful rounded complex nose of medical ash, phenol and iodine, curd soap, chlorinated pool, green apples, sweet vanilla, some citrus, salted toffee, licorice
    • Taste
Smoke, gum, fruit sweetness, honey and salt, spicy oak - not as complex as the nose, but nicely round
    • Finish
Smoky, phenolic, medicinal, sweet and long

With water it is fruiter on the nose and the peat is more subdued.

The palate is creamy now on icing sugar, croissants and shortbread, the peat is definitely in the background and the swet sherry still in abundance.

Still medium length and very sweet.

I think this would be an excellent dram for an introduction to Islay whisky and peat.

    I really like it
    • Nose
Fruity, apple and blackberry followed by the sherry and then quite heavy peat.
    • Taste
Very sweet on peaches predominantly and peach syrup, with pale cream sherry, icing sugar and sweet oatmeal biscuits.
    • Finish
Medium length and still very sweet, not that powerful for 48% but  could turn that round and say it was smooth and refined so it depends which way you spin it.
