Glenrothes Oldest Reserve used to be the oldest expression in the core range of this distillery and one of their most interesting expressions of the past few years in my opinion.

To create it, they combined casks from five vintages: 1967, 1972, 1977, 1979 and 1980. It was launched in the summer of 2012 so all components were aged for 30 to 45 years. Originally a travel retail expression (in the old wooden enclosure), it was also made available from other retailers (in a new cardboard version).

Nose: ah, classic old Speyside. Orange oils, lots of polished oak and ethereal spices. Some waxy and floral touches. Stewed apricots and greengages. Lime and other light tropical touches like passion fruits. I’d say a good part of this was matured in ex-bourbon wood. Mouth: again this fairly fruity profile with an oriental touch. Peaches, (blood) oranges, apple compote, some creamy vanilla and spices. Light ginger, cinnamon and white pepper. Gets drier, with soft resinous notes and a little tobacco, but definitely not over-oaked. Finish: long, half fruity, half spicy. Citrus green tea.

Very good, one of the best official Glenrothes I’ve tried. Relatively affordable as well, considering it’s still found on some shelves for the original price. Around € 250 (or try a sample).

It tastes old, fine, retro - it does not hide its age - the nose is exceedingly complex and everything that I wish for in my old age - on the palate he could well tolerate a few more percentages - but he does not disappoint here an elegant sniffing paint
    • Nose
immediately Old Bottle Flavor, no match notes, fine ripe retro sherry-style berry fruit in vibrant sweet and sour balance always on the move, a hint of beef broth with vegetables, beeswax with a slight Polyphenylurn, very creamy aged berries with a touch of cardboard, Lovage, unami, grape seeds, an acidity as from the finest Baslsamico, oranges, bright plums, fine Christmas and sauces spices, hints of jasmine flowers - quite distinct orange blossom, after more than 30 minutes are also forest honey and roasted hazelnuts added
    • Taste
mild onset - at first it looks a bit thin - then unfold sweet sherry aromas with mint and orange oil, old damp cellar wood, a touch of mushroom culture, clearly beeswax, the longer it stays on the palate the more intense he becomes, the abundant salivation does not cancellation
    • Finish
Delicate elegance - herbs, flowers, delicate slipping fruit notes - wax is still quite long on the palate - overall, it is rather mediocre

I also got one of the first releases, so can only speak to this edition.... It's absolutely fabulous. I'm using it to show my dad how a touch of "decomposition" can be a really beautiful element of a whisky. So old and elegant... A touch stronger and it would have been out of this world!

    (Blind tasting)
I would guess a 20+ year old Highlander or Speysider with approx. 46 percent, and with careful sherry maturation (refill), I guess an older Balblair or similar. at ~ 24 years.

In any case, I like it very much, the only thing that could be criticized for it would be that it is too pleasant and round - but I do not, but see the charm in this drop.

First of all great legs, and the nose also promises to be pretty: delicate but lusciously matured fruit aromas, sherry perfume meets spicy summer flower bouquet and honey. Delicious!
    • Taste
      89 89
Oh la la, matured and round, with a great note of beeswax and the fragile but very flattering melange of fruit flavors.

There is no wood to be felt, the malt silky lines the mouth, a very harmonious affair.

Beautiful malt with more classic red fruits. It was also interesting that he was not too watery despite the "only" 43%. The start is certainly a bit restrained. Due to the age, it will be a lot more substantial than expected. I like it.
    • Nose
He has a lot of sherry. Red berries / wild berries. Blueberry. Blackberry. Blackcurrant. Josta. Forest honey. Wine cellar. Clay soil. Tree bark.
    • Taste
Tame at first. Then nice interplay between sweet and sour. Again these berries. Some fruit tea. Toffee. Beeswax. Leather. Nutmeg.
    • Finish
      Rose water. Herbs. Liquorice. Oak.
