Quick review according to old notes:

Hugely mineral, wet beach pebbles, granite dust, also fruity, multivitamin juice cordial mixer sweetness, chalky, dry and smoky as well, coaldust, soot, hand-hot flintstones, brine, uncrushed black pepper, also some herbal tea aroma, fresh oysters with lemon juice, little hints of vanilla here and there.
Fantastically maritime Campbeltown dram with exceptional balance and structure!

Mineral type dram, but rather rich in flavours. Campbeltown style with hints of springbank to my opinion. I tried the 6th release, which was “shy”, but this 5th telease is an excellent dram with enough “power” and complexity. You can find all taste descriptions in other reviews (I am neither really good at taste description nor poestry). More than worth the money, daily dram, it’s among my favorite drams (just a bottom left :-(

1552) Kilkerran, 2004/2013, 9YO, Work In Progress, 5th Release, Bourbon Wood, Glengyle Distillery
Tried the 6th Release (10YO) last year and feel it was more than a decent dram. So this 5th R 9YO were an elder sibling of the 6th R... isn't it a bit confusing? The one younger on age is the elder... doesn't matter.
    • Nose
N- Snaps of multi scales of aroma, soya, vanilla, crushed leaf, nutmeg and penetrating citrus with earthy smokes. Reminded me of those scented fragrance paper that we (or I) used to write love letter, long long time ago. Vanilla cream emerged with more citrus shavings, boiled barley mashes and just that bit of brine. At merely 46%, it swims and evolves well overtimes with arousement. (89/22)
    • Taste
P- Initial doses of coastal smokes, creamy ashy and metallic sweet. Tropical fruits arrives charred with drizzles of zesty juice of citrus. Vivid, lively and smoggy mouthfeel. (88/22)
    • Finish
F- Medium long, waxy with oily smoke coating. Darjeeling tea, reddish liquorice with well engaging spiciness. (87/21)

My bottle is almost finish. I wish I had another one. This is just too good for its price.

Getting more earthy and sooty on the nose. Palate and finish remains as good as I can remember. One of the better WIP, probably 2nd best after the WIP7 CS.

The essence of a Campbeltown's malt is all here! Plus, I'm a sucker for this style! Started zesty, with fresh citrus especially lemon and lime, with slight waxiness and smokiness in the background. All good so far, but there's more to come. The salty breeze comes after a while, and some sort of chocolate wafer, with some sourish pickle fruits note. Would have thought this is a Springbank.
    • Taste
      90 90
Lovely as the nose suggests - Chalk, rocks and minerals, some oranges which is really enjoyable. On top of that, light soot, lemon and lime again. Love the oily mouthfeel, which is always associated with Campbeltown's malt.
    • Finish
      90 90
Oily and citrusy, chalky and waxy, nice salty touch at the end of the finishing. Rather long finish.

Very good, tasty smoky whisky, but simple, no frills. It will be difficult to recognize it in blind tasting among similar peat whisky samples without age indication.
    • Nose
Discreet, with light peaty shades, with nuances of gray bread, green apple, office paper and glue.
    • Taste
Salty, peppery, quite smoky, with a malt influence.
    • Finish
Medium duration, dry, with a lot of spices, salt and phenols, with a nut-oak bitterness at the end.

At first, it seemed weak, but with aeration, the balance began to straighten, pleased with the combination, as in Caol Ila, of minerality and fruit raspberry shades. Young, but fervently. Campbelltown is a temple of whisky, and releases from this region do not need advances!
    • Nose
      82 82
Op-pa! It smelled of medicine, minerality, a little bit of a scent, dusty paper, lemon juice, Vitamin C tablets, bandages, freshly cut grass. Dryer and saltier, less fruity than Release4 8yo. After an hour, he suddenly found balance in the aroma, became a little sweeter, the medicine went away, and honey notes, vanilla and another white peach came in its place.
    • Taste
      82 82
Hot pepper rolls smoothly, the taste is denser than that of Release 4 8yo 2018, tart wood, apple juice with pulp, raspberry, medicine and minerality have evaporated, bitter rind.
    • Finish
      81 81
Raspberry and in the aftertaste, tannins, though knit a little, but there is a fruity sweetness.

  15. Tom na Gruagaich scored this whisky 80 points Connoisseur

Mineral smoke, wax, maritime notes, vanilla, some salt, malty. An idiosyncratic whisky, the light smoke and the little sweetness makes it interesting.

A good WIP, but not the best. Enthusiasm 3/5
    • Nose
First mineral, evoking slate, quite direct, it then gives malt, farm peat and granny smith apples. Later, the bourbon cask takes the ascendancy.
    • Taste
Much softer than the nose (honey, vanilla ...), it has a beautiful texture, but remains a bit angular - a sign of youth.
    • Finish
Rather delicate and fruity, beautiful persistence on sweet spices.

A quite nice one though not really many-faceted. It is okay but the wonders Serge found in this are obviously unobtainable to my senses. Probably the bitterness is too hard to handle for me..
    • Nose
The smokiness faintly lingers around, green apple, liquorice and salmiak, vanilla, plaster, some honey, lemon and lemongrass. Opens up nicely.
    • Taste
Smoky lemon, honey, a distinctive combination of vanilla and mild smoke. Some syrupy notes with a savoury salmiak. Rather pungent and bitterish.
    • Finish
      Middle-long, pleasantly malty, faintly smoky.

Tasted blind. Nose wood, vanilla, apple. Made a little young in the mouth, alcohol is quite present with a marked bitterness. Finale of medium length.

  28. Marko_I did not rate this whisky Connoisseur

I wanted this Kilkerran, because I already knew a few and found great. Since "grows" a good distillate. And this also does not disappoint - starts a bit lemony, then nice crispy, leathery, spicy oak. And I think, just this bottling can not hide the "kinship" to Springbank / Longrow, there resonates this musty-warm, mossy-mushroomy note, if I'm not just imagining that. I like.

  29. Gloin scored this whisky 84 points Expert Senior

As I said: a solid smoker with 46 - 50% from the ex-Bourbon barrel, I estimate age at 12 - 15 years, from the smoke I would say Bowmore. blind tasting
    • Nose
Sweet smoke, bright fruits, but no lemon. The smoke is rather reserved, but present. Vanilla and caramel is also there. I definitely dial ex bourbon cask and drinking strength. But with alcohol, I often miss it.
    • Taste
the start is strong, maybe he has more percentages. Sweet bright fruits, maybe some banana, medium smoke, oak. So the taste is very pleasing, a solid smoker.
    • Finish
      medium and bittersweet

  30. Palindrome scored this whisky 85 points Expert Senior

Scents of boiler room, orange cake icing, sea salt, deck tar, brown sugar, mint. Tastes of old leather, sea sand, waxed canvas jacket, tequila, old books, and a hint of a thunder shower approaching from the east. Finish is medium but very pleasant with more of the same. I was a bit disappointed with this bottle. Serge's rating excited me, but I think he sometimes rates things that taste old higher than things that taste delicious. Older is not always better, particularly older whiskies that were not aged terribly long. I shan't be buying the WIP6 Bourbon. While I love Springbank, this whisky has not made a convert out of me. Perhaps with a few more years under its belt . . . Say, for instance, if there comes along a WIP 10 or 12, then I shall gladly buy another bottle or two.

  31. tuntime scored this whisky 90 points Expert Junior

Reminds of coastal, waxy Clynelish and lively Springbank quality and petrol.

Fresh and clean malt and fruit, palate cleansing. A young delight.

  32. m884 scored this whisky 87 points Expert Senior

Very mineralic and oily with smoke, wax and green leafs on the nose and mouth with a fairly long and dirty finish. love it!

  33. Ivynor scored this whisky 84 points Expert Senior

Rather easy and fun to drink
    • Nose
Lemon, green apple, young. At first, a lot of alcohol and smoke (blind, I even confused the entry into alcoholic and smoke with an islay ...)
    • Taste
Sweet, sweet, a little creamy. Pretty simple: lemon, caramel, vanilla
    • Finish
Pretty short, same notes as in the mouth.

  34. Rob77 scored this whisky 90 points Member Senior

The more I drink this, the more I enjoy it. It's uncomplicated, totally packed with flavor, and very distinctive. A great daily dram for a relatively good price. I just got a 2nd bottle.

    an always welcomed dram
    • Nose
      pleasant after old harbor water
a bottle back: the smell in the morning of the yesterday emptied wine glasses
soft apricots in damp baskets, a hint of tar and damp earth after warm summer rain
Salt ... the wet bikini, seawater
    • Taste
a delicate cognac feeling, cereals, chocolate, noble and bright
a light summer spice lovage ??
    • Finish
      medium
      slightly bitter but pleasant
slightly malty sweetness, salt, maritime, some apricot, light and light

  36. Hare&Copper scored this whisky 86 points Expert Senior

    • Nose
Sooty, salty, peppery, damp wood, metallic. Apple peel. A bit grainy. Ginger ale.
    • Taste
Smoke. Citrus fruit. More salt. A bit thin.
    • Finish
      Medium. Late spice

  37. Bishlouk scored this whisky 86 points Connoisseur

Quite well done overall, much more interesting than the '' Work in Progress IV '' that I had the opportunity to taste. The difference of style between the nose and the mouth is nice.

    (tasted in festival)
    • Nose
Wet dog and freshly cut grass.
    • Taste
The reduction is detectable without the whole being too watery. Vanilla sweetness mixed with wet straw.
    • Finish
      Pretty short.

Believe me or not the bourbon wood Kilkerran will become as famous as the 1973/1974 Longrows. I´ve tested already 6 different casks from sherry to rum and I'm a true sherry lover but the bourbon wood currently knocks them all out. There is a bright future for Kilkerran which is currently widely underestimated and rated.

This one needs a bit of time especially for the palate and the finish, but then, i can more than agree to everything Serge said.
An exceptional dram with a lot of character! Get some as long as they are around. A real bargain!!

  41. KayMeertens scored this whisky 84 points Connoisseur

Almond, apple, macademia nut, pepper, vanilla, citrus, peach (sorbet), honey, a salty sea-breeze and a whiff of peat. Slight hints of cheese and aniseed in the finish.

Strangely, I have a slight preference for the WIP III in direct comparison. Although also this one is a decent whisky for its age, it hasn't improved in those two additional years.

  42. tomy63 scored this whisky 82 points Expert Senior

Still a little young, but the slightly peaty side of the nose and the finish could be interesting in the years to come.
    • Nose
expressive but somewhat alcoholic, cereals, fresh fruit (apple, pear), light peaty tip (at Springbank).
    • Taste
powerful but alcohol better integrated than nose, green fruits, lemon, cereals, cut grass, honey, a very small side vanilla and spicy now. Pleasant texture, a little greasy.
    • Finish
medium length, cereals, grass cut, peat comes back on the end.
