  3. Robinzon25 scored this whisky 84 points Connoisseur

Strong, pleasantly scalding, very "drinkable" malt. Sherry casks, almost always, are successfully combined with smoky spirits.
    • Nose
Filled with peaty, peppery and marine echoes. Behind them are tart berry tones, old leather and tree resin.
    • Taste
Salt, pepper, citrus sourness, smoked note, some tannins and chokeberry flavor.
    • Finish
Medium duration, slightly oily, tart, smoky, salty, peppery, with a slight sweet berry influence and oak tones.

  5. davidloosli scored this whisky 84 points Expert Senior

    • Nose
Beautiful sherrynose, red apple, oranges, cacao powder, dark berries, a bit medicinal, a hint of marzipan
    • Taste
Dirty, strawberries, cough drops (medicin), amarena, oranges, a little pepperyness
    • Finish
Sweet-sour, not a lot of wood influence, mineraly, honey sweetness, rather short, orange candy (PEZ)

This whisky, on the whole, is inferior to Release 5 WiP Bourbon 2013. You expect sherry from pressure and emotions, but here Oloroso is dry ... is it?
    • Nose
The color is noticeably darker than bourbon, but still light, at first salted nuts, dry sour sherry, again a bit of medicine, sulfites, the same bandages with pills, a little iodine, foliage. For sherry derivatives, of course, is not enough. Yes, rubber harnesses. But after 30 minutes, it still opened, it smelled of dried figs, freshly sawed branches of fruit trees in the garden. And very pleased with exotic sweet shades.
    • Taste
Spicy, herbal tinctures, rather hardened, knits a little, cardboard, apples, a little cinnamon.
    • Finish
In the aftertaste is inferior to the same age of 9yo 2013 Bourbon, tannins, knitting wood of fruit trees, a little sweetness. Well, somehow quite simple.

Soft, slightly cautious sherry nose. Just as if it was a short finish. Lacks depth and strength.
    • Taste
      82 82
Starts quietly, but then becomes rather dirty. Not specifically on sherry in a good way, but somewhat chemically. By difficult to describe the dirty character.
    • Finish
      75 75
Heavily spicy finish. Burns and stimulates properly with a little burnt rubber and sulfur. Not super pleasant.

First mineral, evoking slate, quite direct, it then gives malt, farm peat and granny smith apples. Later, the barrel of bourbon takes the ascendant.Bien sweeter than the announcement nose (honey, vanilla ...), it has a beautiful texture, but remains nevertheless a little angular - sign of youth.Rather delicate and fruity, beautiful persistence on sweet spices.A good WIP, but not the best. Enthusiasm 3/5

[May, 2017]  I had this dram during a Kilkerran masterclass tasting at the Campbeltown whisky festival.

It has a not very active nose, rather shy on some sherry and malty aromas.  It arrives a little adstringent in the mouth (cold ashes).  The taste is all about sweet malty and sherry flavours in a nice balance.  Medium finish with slight bitter notes (tannins).

  11. Achany scored this whisky 85 points Connoisseur

Soft influence of sherry, nuts, dark fruits, a little muddy, spices, a fine influence of oak. A well balanced dram, nice sherry but still malty. I found some bottles for a very reasonable price. Perfect

I heard quite a lot of ugly things about this one before trying it but I couldn't find anything in the dram that should inspire such disgust. It seems to me to be a perfectly okay Campbeltown style whisky with a successful if not particularly inspiring sherry maturation. Compared side by side the same year's bourbon maturation did not appear to be that much better, perhaps +1pts or so.

    Mango & Papaya

Kilkerran is the single malt brought
to market by the Glengyle distillery on Campbeltown (as the Glengyle name is
already used by a company that offers a Highland blend). Their series Work in
Progress already has a 10 Year Old, both on bourbon and sherry casks. I will
try the previous edition on sherry, released in 2013. So this is 9 years old.

The nose is dark and sweet with a
dirty edge. Think strawberries and watermelon, but also roasted nuts and
raspberries. Liquorice and cinnamon. But also loads of earthy notes. That makes
it dirty in my book. Anyway, this is a very good nose indeed.

It is oily on the palate. Good
mouthfeel. Rhubarb and nuts, but also chocolate and tobacco. With a clear hint
of peat. Midpalate it turns almost exotic. Think mango and papaya. More peat
than expected. Hint of espresso. Very good.

The finish is quite smoky and
    long on espresso.

    Surprisingly complex whisky for
such a young age and better than the 10 Year Old, in my opinion. Between 40 and
50 EUR, which is very fair.

An interesting dram but completely unbalanced.
    • Nose
Light Sherry, yellow fruits, apples, a hint of salt and solvent.
    • Taste
Powerful on the palate, spices, pepper, pepper, paprika and violet.
    • Finish
A little too much alcohol for my taste.

  20. KayMeertens scored this whisky 85 points Connoisseur

Blind tasting of a sample. What an underrated whisky! 85/86.
    • Nose
Fatty tropical fruits such as papaya. Apricot, plum, toffee, pineapple, lemon, peat, plum and perhaps a little cherry. . Light wood shavings. Extremely oily.
    • Taste
Toffee, ashy peat, papaya, apricot, lime, apricot, chocolate, orange, pineapple, pepper, butter and limestone.
    • Finish
Peat, dark chocolate, toffee, apricot, chocolate, gingerbread, lime, pineapple, pepper, nutmeg and hazelnut.

  21. Wild Thing scored this whisky 80 points Expert Senior

I think with age, there can be something out of it.
    • Nose
Fruity with sherry, nuts and spices. Some vanilla and an earthy note.
    • Taste
Oily and buttery with ginger and mineral notes.
    • Finish
Medium long with ginger and nuts. With a lot of goodwill maybe a touch of dark chocolate.

I had two curd-sour froths behind me, maybe I ripped a glass of Joura well, the sherry does not fit me much, but the writings do not lie. Re-tasted at the 2014 Whisky Festival.
    • Nose
Shallow woodliness, a little sweetish curd, like the Jura previously tasted, a little fruit and a sherry bite. (83 b)
    • Taste
The 46% is quite sharp, with a stronger impression. A bit of iodine peat, again the cheese and wood. (83 b)
