First time I tried this, 91 points (4-5 years ago). Second time, 92 points. Third time, 92.5 points.

A very interesting nose, especially for a Teaninich. It's gotta be the cask influence because this is sharp, pungent, tangy, and peaty, with a layer of fruity sweetness underneath. If you would to tell me this is a very good single cask of Port Ellen, I would not disagree. Maybe it was matured in a ex-Port Ellen cask. There's a bit of the Springbank funky peat also. Is it possible that this is finished in either a Springbank or Port Ellen cask? I doubt that if this was either a PE or Springbank cask, that it was a full maturation of 29 years. The signatory label does however say "Matured in a Refill Butt", without any statement re: finishing, so maybe this was just a one-off, miracle cask for Teaninich.

Bright and expressive. Mouth-coating. Very oily. Herbs and green tea. Lemon liqueur. Quite a bit of peat. Definitely a cross between Port Ellen and modern Springbank here. One of these days, I will do an experiment combining a naked Port Ellen with a slightly sherried Springbank -- I bet the flavors can closely resemble this one. I will report back if I do that. With water, swims like Sun Yang but with good teeth.
    • Finish

Herbal. Peppery. Very long. Very impressive. Smoke at the end. My gosh, seriously, there's a whiff of smoke... An absolutely confounding whisky, made famous by Serge with his 93 point review.

  2. ConvalRen scored this whisky 82 points Connoisseur

Very mineral like and floral. Feels like dishwashing water and clorox.

Tasting notes from Serge / Whiskyfun:Teaninich 29 yo 1983/2013 (57.5%, Signatory Vintage, refill butt, cask
    #8071, 471 bottles)   Colour: straw.Nose:
hold on, isn't this heavy rum? Amazingly big notes of sugar cane, petrol,
olives and tar, we're extremely far from 'Teaninich' but I must say I'm
enjoying this a lot. No, no mistakes at WF's sample handling department.
Becomes a tad gentler over time but it remains mineral and kind of flinty.
Putty. With water: more of all that! Was the cask seasoned with (good)
plasticine? Or smoked? Liquid smoke? Was the cask stored in a Harley garage?
Mouth (neat): whah! Same feeling, this is quite incredible, mineral, petroly,
very nervous (lime!), with some white rhum agricole, some salmiak...
Spectacular whisky. With water: and now there's some seawater! More lemons,
more almond oil, gravel, chalk, crisp chenin blanc, wax, smokes... Yes, holy
    smokes!
Finish: long, putty-like, salty, mezcaly... What's not to like? Just
the aftertaste that's maybe a notch fizzy, bizarrely.
    Comments: Springbank in
disguise? Ex-Lagavulin wood? Fortified Pouilly-Fumé? I wanna see this cask's
papers! (just joking). My best surprise this year since Pichon-Baron 1990 in
    May - but that's not whisky, is it? SGP:373 - 93 points.
