[April, 2017]  I am rested and relaxed today, so let us see...  As expected no bitterness this time, just the usual and pleasant woody notes.  So it seems true that your tastebuds react more sensitive if you are tired or stressed...

There is no accounting for taste...

[March, 2017]  I retasted it today and find it significantly more oaky both on the palate and during the finish.  A touch too woody for my taste, but maybe I have more sensitive tastebuds tonight (yes, it is true that your taste varies from day to day depending on a lot of factors as I have tested myself:  One is if you are tired - then your tastebudes are usually more sensitive to unpleasant notes - and I slept last night a few hours only...).

I will have another retaste when I am well rested...

There is no accounting for taste...

[January, 2017]  Really nice stuff, easy to sip and yes, delicious. Just the price tag is simply unreasonable.  But as long as people buy at these prices it seems okay, why should the distillery owners not maximize their profits?

...another sign of a further inflating whisky bubble.

Yes, as old Balvenie as it gets! Heather honey, waxy barley, a little vanilla, blood orange and orange zest. But that's not all folks! Sherry influences of raisins, blackcurrant, blueberry, prune, mint, sherry sourness and sweetness, damp oak. It's incredibly soft, complex, enticing and all of that!

Taste

Oily and delicate, although a quite some pepper shows up. But that works as the rest is incredibly balanced. Honey, orange and oak fight for dominance. After that comes wax, dark and dried fruit, mint, some earthy notes and roasted nuts.

Finish

Moderate, spicy on pepper, ginger and a faint hint of cinnamon. Further, it gets nuttier and nuttier (almond), but stays fruity, minty and woody too. In other words, it's complex from beginning till the end.

Comments

An absolute cracker, this bottling. It's so very well blended, my deepest respect for the master blender. It's complex, smooth yet with a kick, and it entertains from the beginning to the end.

Cheers! Paul

Note by Serge:

Balvenie 'Tun 1401' (50.2%, OB, batch #8, +/-2013)Five stars More or less the same proportions for this UK-only bottling of 2,700 skittles. I believe it was the last Tun 1401 ever, before they started to issue much larger batches under the Tun 1509 moniker. Colour: amber, so darker than batch 7. Nose: more floral, wit peonies, and more sherried for sure, which the colour already suggested. More walnuts, a touch of bacon, then seven bags of raisins of all kinds, heather honey, and then simply notes of old sherry. Not sherried whisky, sherry as a wine. You know, Jerez. With water: a game-y side, some old hay, soy sauce, umami, chicken soup… Well, this is a Spartan story, three sherry casks managed to force nine bourbon casks to their knees. Mouth (neat): there’s this oakiness again, but this time it mingles with the spirit rather better, creating a mentholy and liquoricy profile that works a treat. Vicks, Seville oranges, peppermint, black pepper… You do feel the pepper in the back of your throat even before you’ve swallowed one single drop. With water: classic, complex, herbal, minty, and very raisiny. A blend of oloroso with PX (I know, a crime). Finish: rather long, smoother, never too oaky, with a dry aftertaste. Dry aftertastes always call for more. Comments: simply better. I mean, more to my liking… SGP:651 - 90 points.

A real nosing whisky. You could spend an hour just nosing this beauty and it gets better by the minute. It changes character with time. A feature of only the greatest. This is spectacular. I enjoyed my 3cl in more than an hour and anyone else should too (or even longer).

Nose

Rich sherry, resinous, Turkish Delight, blackberry, treacle.

Taste

Spicy, fizzy on caramel, almond, treacle tart, toffee. After a while hints of dark orange marmalade.

Finish

Quite long and spicy

Comments
WITH WATER
The nose is not as expressive.
The palate has lost some power even with minimal water.
The finish is not as good as when neat.

Water is not needed here, in fact it spoils it. Like the batch 5 it is rich, creamy and spicy.
Not as full on the palate as batch 5 but still very good.

Nose: Dusk, fruit, leather, lovely spices, clearly very old and complex. Redfruit, sherry complex. hint of oak, very very well made.

Taste: Classic sweet and sour. Oak. Sherry is clearly here. little bitter note. yeast. more oak, some vanilla.

Body: full and powerfull

Finish: Cream vanilla, toffe fudge. hint of oak. Very nice

Price: quite expensive, but yet top quality.

Presentation: Sober but decent, let the whisky do the talking.

Comments: I tent to say this is the best whisky I've drunk so far.
