Had the opportunity to try this last year in November (thank you Michael!) and now had the chance to retry this. It is just fantastic! My bottle has thick oily white flakes at the bottom, no worries it is quite normal for these bottles.
    • Nose
      93 93
Apples, pears, peach honey, some grassy element. Wow! Some wet pebbles, a bit of fragant. All very nice and balanced. Grapefruits emerge, some creamy vanilla and coconut.
    • Taste
      91 91
Full on dried oranges, little bit of heat. Honey, limestone, lemon, marzipan. Could be a little bit thicker to be honest. Vanilla, something herbal, pears, peaches. Getting a bit of red chilli here now.
    • Finish
      92 92
Great finish, really shifts gears here compared to the taste. Palate seems to lose a bit of power but the finish is long! Again peaches, some pears, apples, some of the lime is still there. Some coastal element here a bit of briny elements. And it could be imagination but a whiff of smoke.

Another überfruity old Bunna with lovely spicy backbone.
    • Nose
Fragrant. Uberfruity and waxy. Ripe bananas, mangoes, pineapples, apricots. Whiffs of coconuts. Citrus. Floral and honeyed. Hints of coastal and mineral notes (seashells, wet stones). Safe. Not a complete copy-paste.
    • Taste
Fruity and waxy. Bananas, peaches, oranges. Juicy, zesty and slightly sour (grapefruits). A few spices (pepper, ginger), light oaky notes, a pinch of salt.
    • Finish
Long, lingering fruits and spices on the tongue.

  5. Dram Dracula scored this whisky 94 points Connoisseur

Addendum -- After opening this for 4 months, this leaped from 91 points to 93-94 points... Wow. Oily, diesel, fruity, citrusy, white creamy fruits, with hint of smoke.
    • Nose
      91 91
It says "butt" but more like ex-bourbon cask to me. Vanilla and white fruits like pears, apples, guava, honey dew. Also some lemons. A lot of fruits, yes, but this is not wickedly fruity. Ginger honey. White pepper. Good, but I was expecting something heavier and more precise. This is a bit all over the place.
    • Taste
      92 92
Lots of shaved coconuts along with some white fruits again and also raw veggies like daikon and white carrots. White peony root herb. Not supremely fruity. Pretty good mouthfeel, waxy. Not perfect though. Clearly, there is some excessive wood spice.
    • Finish
      90 90
Quality dram. Lingering wood spice. Again, not as fruity as I would like.

Surprisingly fresh at first, doesn't seem that old at all. Pear, sweet lime, banana, green pesto, a bit of broth and a whiff of smoke.
    • Taste
      91 91
Tobacco, leather, crème brûlée, pear, strawberry, apricot, banana and red apple.
    • Finish
      90 90
Tobacco, smoke, apricot, malt and a bit of banana.

  7. Calmar scored this whisky 91 points Connoisseur

Excellent mole, bright bourbon aging, the aroma is very minimal, but very deep, but the taste / finish is just a concentrate, very juicy, thick, deep, in development and the flavor adds strongly.
    • Nose
Open, dry, freshly planed board, vanilla, thinner, light floral notes, lemon peel, grain, some fresh vegetables - daikon, cabbage; spicy field grasses, medicinal motifs.
    • Taste
Powerful, rich, corn, oak, creamy sweetness, vanilla, pepper wave, ginger, some tropical fruits, banana, mineral-metallic hues, industrial-oil notes.
    • Finish
Spicy, warming, vanilla, oak, light pepper, ginger, corn, dried herbs, very dense, thick.

My oldest and best Bunnahabhain so far. Huge whisky!
    • Nose
Very complex, slowly opens, the first is a creamy, fruity layer with a lot of vanilla and fruits: pineapple, tangerine, banana, mango, apple, pear, melon and coconut, slowly appears the heavier notes: salt, seaweed, candles, hay, freshly polished furniture, mild smoke and peat
    • Taste
The fruit here is also decisive: waxy apples, banana, orange, pear, coconut, melon, grapefruit, punch pudding,
next line is a lively spicy oak, vanilla, ginger, salt with a little fresh cut grass, honey and peat
    • Finish
Medium long length, spicy, woody and sweet

A lively old Bunna that is very unbalanced profile wise (sweet and dry notes fighting) but this actually makes it very interesting and enjoyable.
    • Nose
Smells like a bowl of fruit cocktail and cream at first but then brine, seaweed and rock pools, it is maritime.

Hints of caramel and fudge the big fruit note is pineapple.
    • Taste
Hot and spicy with definite banana and custard notes. It is also drying at first then a blast of vanilla.

There is some sour apple and orange in the mix.
    • Finish
Long and spicy till the end.

  11. Falnor scored this whisky 91 points Connoisseur

Lovely old timer. Sad to see there getting expensive or just not available anymore
    • Nose
      Complex
nose that, over time, reveals an old and beautiful whisky. Before we come to
the fruit a bit of wax and hay, then it opens with lots and lots of fruit. Let's
see, we've got some mandarin and oranges in fudge. So lot's of sweetness and
roundness. There's even tropical fruits like pineapple, bananas and mango. This
gives the bunna all these layers.
    • Taste
      Bananas and
cake. Cocos with added sugar. Peach and oranges. The oak gives some extra
power. Ginger and caraway seed. Gets slightly dry over time.
    • Finish
      Soft and
elegant. A real dream dram. Remains sweet on liquorice, cashew nuts and oak

A wonderful tropical surprise from Bunnahabhain, sexy. A great move from the Whiskybase (Archives). This is a-tropical-fiesta-on-Islay-whisky.
    • Nose
An exotic blast of rich tropical fruit, overipe mango, lovely estery notes, banana's and in the back that typical Bunnahabhain touch.
    • Taste
Smooth, sweet, spicey (liqorice), esters are dancing on your palate, banana peardrops.
    • Finish
Warming sweet, estery, fruity (some tropical fruit in the back), nutty (macadamia), lingering.

    Ranking: 1st nose, 2nd finish, 3rd mouth

the nose is quite interesting and pleasant
    the mouth loses noticeable alcohol
The finish is delicious with lots of apricot jam and some smoke
There is a lack of tension and depth
Overall, this whisky stumbles at various points
and can not convince for his age and his price
    • Nose
      slightly smoky adhesive note
      apricots
      Woodruff & herbs
      Almond & raw cake dough
with water much fruity (sweeter) and slightly maritime
      Woodruff remains
    • Taste
      nut marzipan
      Schokoladenbrei
then alcoholic burning on the tongue
      not better with water
    • Finish
      long
      apricot jam
      Apricot kernels (slightly bitter)
      some smoke

  18. dankin scored this whisky 91 points Expert Senior

Less fruit with water, more oak.
    • Nose
Sweet salty, light stone fruit, banana, the surf on the pier in front of the still.
    • Taste
Fruity, sweet explosion, then spicy intense.
    • Finish
      Fruity warming, medium to long

Another great example from the time when not (almost) everything had to be from Islay peated with as many ppm's as possible ...
    • Nose
My first impression is actually salt with apple, followed by pear. Then follow mint, leather sole, tobacco and vanilla!
    • Taste
Bitterness of apple seeds, more fruits
    • Finish
Spicy, fruity, powerful, salty seawater, which also lingers a bit

An excellent Bunna. Thank you Whiskybase for the sample.
    • Nose
Starts sweet with lovely fruity and vanilla notes. Sesame brittle and sweet exotic fruit salad enriched with vanilla sugar. Also some Lush soap. A little bit of coconut, cake, a whiff of smoke and peat. An excellent nose.
    • Taste
Warming with citrus fruits (oranges and grapefruits) at first mouthfeel.  Grassy and earthy with a wee bit of salt and hints of smoke and peat.
    • Finish
Long, spicy and zesty. Becomes slightly dry and ends velvety.

    Damn..
    • Nose
Give it time, and then.. Ow.. This nose is devine. It surpasses perfection. Very fruity, very full, very bunna, very subtle. Really great. Waxy. Fruits: red, white, dried, citrus, everything! Also honey, marzipan, vanilla. All perfectly in harmony.
    • Taste
Lost for words.. Can it really be this nice? Ok, get a hold of your self: again very waxy. Again a lot of fruit: melon, citrus (grapefruit). Everything coated in a layer of honey. A bit grassy and malty. Intense taste, very intense.
    • Finish
      I want to cry..

Highly recommended. It has that something special that we are all looking for.

  25. Sonett scored this whisky 91 points Connoisseur

    A very pleasant dram
    • Nose
At first a mix of flowers and vanilla. There is also a thin nose of something wax-like. Furniture wax is the closest but still not exactly that. Also in the background a very elegant touch of smoke.
    • Taste
A smooth plesant vanilla sweetness at first, then slowly increasing peppery chili tones that stays for quite a while
    • Finish
Finish is long and smoth, going from fading spices over alight oak taste to flaten out in a slightly grassy tone with a dry vanilla ending

  26. rdavek scored this whisky 92 points Expert Senior

This is definitely a stunning dram.  Did the best I could to nail down notes with a small sample, but I look forward to having a bottle to explore.  This one will take a while to reveal it's full story.
    • Nose
Complex nose.  Hot candle wax, furniture polish, yellow fruits, a little cantaloupe and something sugary lurching in the background. Maybe a wisp of smoke, but maybe not.  After a while hints of canvas and dried grass and the fruit comes more forward, with the wax ever present.
    • Taste
Very silky mouthfeel, but the palate is a little shy at first.  It takes a while to develop in the mouth.  Again an elusive touch of smoke, I think. The wax comes through with a restrained fruitiness and some wood spice.  The sweetness from the nose is there, still in the background.  No need for water with this one, however if I had a bigger sample I would have liked to see if a few drops brings the fruit forward as sometimes happens.
    • Finish
Medium length, first the spice develops in intensity and quickly fades replaced by a luscious sweetness that lingers.
