Ond old sample from the depths of my collection when SMWS started putting out grains. Girvan with a smoky twist?

Horse barns, yeasty notes of grains and hard sweets, and some deep herbal notes. It's not deep, but rather a little spirity and rich, butter and some sharp herbal notes. Crushed dried flowers and cask char.

Hmmm... Thisis where it sort of gains traction. Spice and sweet blends into a smooth grainy sweet dram. Lots of herbal sharpness to contrast the overt sweetness, more smoke, and a surprising brightness.

This is where it sort of derails for me now. Smoke starts to separate from the dram and begets a bit more sweetness and a really dry finish. Hard oak spice and cask char begins a twist of glue grain notes as it whiles away.

A wonderful balanced grain from Girvan. And 'only' 28 years old. Awesome.

    SMWS NZ note:

    Smoky Werther’s Original
    Cask No. G7.5

COMMENTS:    This is the grain distillery owned by the same folks behind Balvenie, Kininvie, and Glenfiddich. Dismiss grain whiskies at your peril – this one offers tremendous complexity, and a kaleidoscope of aromas and flavours. This gem of a cask is a NZ exclusive and was not released in Australia.

UK Tasting Panel: The Panel found themselves transported into a very old and dusty Antiques shop with old wooden floors and big wooden furniture, with lots of brassy and leathery aromas as well as the sweet coal smoke of a distant fire in the air. Fruity and sweet notes slowly appearing, Newberry fruit jellies, Eccles cake and rum and raisin ice cream. The taste has a delicate, well balanced sweet and smoke combination, dusty icing sugar and, if only they would exist, smoky Werther’s Original. With the addition of little water nutmeg and cinnamon next to ripe plums give way to the waxy aroma of a well worn Barbour jacket. To taste thick treacle tart, Seville orange marmalade and dark chocolate ginger.
