Whisky Reviews for Glenfarclas 1973

4 users have left a review for this whisky and scored it an average of 91.96 points

  1. Dram Dracula scored this whisky 91 points Connoisseur

Is its inherent quality worth its current value? Probably not. For me, the best sherry casks are not just sherry bombs but have that old-school, old library, leather, tobacco, super-fruity qualities, which this one unfortunately doesn't possess.
    • Nose
Modern sherry, very heavy, very well done -- raisins, cherry, black grapes, brown sugar, smoke, but also some burnt BBQ meat smell, which I don't find particularly enjoyable. With water, the nose is better and its good aromas more accessible.
    • Taste
A sherry bomb, through and through, and again, definitely modern. The taste is commonly found in a lot of good sherry bombs which cost 2-3x less. The sherry cask totally overwhelms the distillate.
    • Finish
      Good, predictable

  2. Igitor scored this whisky 92 points Connoisseur

    • Nose
      92 92
Rum raisins, fruit yoghurt, pickled plums, strawberry jam and light herbs.

The nose is wonderfully complex and gets fuller over time. The raisins get stronger and stronger and mix with leather aromas and (for whatever reason) minimal smoke aromas. The full fruit aromas (ultimately with blueberries and blackcurrants) still float above all of this.

With a little water comes wood aromas (cedar wood) and liquorice.

The nose is very cool, even if it could be a little more varied.
    • Taste
      92 92
The strongest strawberry jam comes through in the mouth. It is followed by mint and raisins and ends in chocolate. Slight bitter notes only come at the very end.
    • Finish
      91 91
The finish is very long and balanced.
