Whisky Reviews for Macduff 1980 WM

7 users have left a review for this whisky and scored it an average of 90.74 points

  1. GlenSikkes did not rate this whisky Connoisseur

    Note by Wilson & Morgan;

Our Macduff bottled last year from the same vintage (cask #6886) sold out fast, but luckily we had a sister cask in store! Once again, it’s a very rich, deep, intense old malt… only, this time it’s much more wood-driven: the impressive array of tropical fruits (banana, mango, passion fruit, and this time even grapefruit and a hint of green apple at the attack) is still at the forefront, but it’s immediately obvious both at nose and palate that it has to fight hard with equally intense oak, liquorice, strongly brewed black and red tea… and even a hint of unflavoured pipe tobacco. The final result is still very fruity but not as sweet as expected, and particularly spicy, balsamic and very herbal, too. Powerful!

A very nice whisky. The nose is really nice.
    • Nose
A lot of fruit (both yellow fruits and exotic fruits) and then ginger and spices. Fairly melted, not necessarily very complex but it is expressive and very very good
    • Taste
Intense. We find fruits and spices of the nose. A lot of wood and more. A lot of wood actually. This mouth is relatively dry but not unpleasant
    • Finish
Long, dry, on wood, spices and tobacco.

What a cocktail! I think this is the first time I see domestic yellow fruits turn into exotic fruits.
    • Nose
After Glenturret # 11, still fruit in shambles. They are more of us, with peaches and very ripe apricots. Croissants dough. Light ginger. Honey.
    • Taste
Attack on the same fruits as the nose then gradually move to exotic fruits (pineapple or grapefruit). A superb evolution! A bit bitter. Milky texture.
    • Finish
      Long, stuffed with exotic fruits.

An unexpected delicious fuit bomb. Not the most complex, but pretty entertaining!

Tasted at the Witch Festival - Den Haag - 06.2013
    • Nose
Spicy and fruity. Yeah, the oak speaks loud and clear, but this is is nice and tantalizing wood. Grows creamy with a hint of chocolate now and some spearmint. After Eight ? Remember of one of these Whisky Fair Tomatins released some years ago.
    • Taste
Starts on the same oaky notes than the nose, with quite some pencil shavings. But after a handfull of seconds, here it is, the huge and unexpected exotic blast just into your face (maracuja?), not unlike a Whisky Fair 1976 Benriach this time. Remains rather dry all the way through, with a perfect alcoholic balance.
    • Finish
Long and tasty, becoming slightly drying at the end.

    A kind of fruit bomb
