Whisky Reviews for Caol Ila Batch 1 TBWC

6 users have left a review for this whisky and scored it an average of 85.75 points

  1. TP-Darknight scored this whisky 87 points Expert Senior

SMELL damp peat, smoked oysters and some pebbles washed by the sea form a smoked, marine core through which plum jam, steamed blackberries and apricot yoghurt rise. Vanilla ice cream and thyme honey are present in the background. TASTE sweet dried fruits, bitter jam and dry woody tannins come out with a slightly salty element. Cured meat, roasted chestnuts and charred smoke follow with a hint of creamy lemon meringue cake. Rich and smoky finish, with a little brown sugar sweetness.

A very nice Caol Ila, again a little something own and yet beautifully shown the distillery, pleases well.
    • Nose
For Caol Ila quite clear, concentrated, cold and ashy smoke, has a hint of Octomore, is probably. at a young age, cinnamon, clove, nutmeg, light honey, fennel and white pepper, some dried apricot, some green apple with peel, some toffee
    • Taste
Green apple starts directly to you, to fine, oily salt (here again typical Caol Ila), dried apricot, white pepper, nutmeg and cinnamon, light herbal honey, fennel, green tea, cotton candy, here only very, very little real smoke, rather only slightly carbonized, young oak briquettes, very round at all and still nice full in the mouth
    • Finish
Sweet and sour with the charred oak, nice mixture, the citrus notes, the green apple, plus floss and cotton candy and then the light ash, light malt, medium to long

This is clearly quite young, but a delicious dram with a long finish

Tasting Note by Master of Malt:

Nose: Classic Caol Ila on the nose, harbour ropes, seaweed and a hint of linseed. Oily with malt, brine and butter.Palate: A slight departure from the nose, it puts us in mind of sitting on a deck out at sea with black pepper and hints of driftwood too. The mouthfeel is slightly oily without being too viscous and there is a little late nuttiness to savour.Finish: Gentle oak and open ocean, slightly drying.
