We finished up our tasting with a Bowmore. At only 12 years, this is a big smokey monster; but the Sherry tames the beast quite nicely.
    • Nose
      88 88
The nose is fresh seashore. Brine and sweet fruits. Iodine and wet stone. Hints of bacon and hints of medicinal bandages.
    • Taste
      89 89
The palate is sweet, malt bread and brine again. Almost a charred strawberry jam note and some hints at mint tea and caramelized sugar.
    • Finish
      86 86
The finish is sweet, Sherry and smoke lead the way with oak spice and pork roast falling behind.

    • Nose
Sulfur, meat, "burnt" smoke. Black fruit, greedy, with orange zest. Creamy vanilla.
    • Taste
Moderate sherry, soft smoke. Sweet spices - including cinnamon.
    • Finish
Fluid and caressing, we find cinnamon. Quiet and wise. Average in length with a citrus note.

    Nice sherry-smoke combination.
    • Nose
On the nose first caramel with fruit, then excellent Sherry smoke, but very discreet. Not biting, round and pleasant. With a little water, the subtle alcoholic touch disappears almost completely.
    • Taste
In the mouth, only a huge, spicy start, then clearly dark berries and dried fruit. Sweet, pleasant smoke.
    • Finish
In the finish not too long-lasting. Some smoke with tender oak.

    Blind tasted for hat whiskyforum.nl
    • Nose
The smoke comes to you immediately, then the smoke becomes slightly sweeter.
    • Taste
Again the smoke immediately, then slightly sweeter and with the taste of citrus fruit.
    • Finish
Half-long, a lot of smoke and pepper.

A good whisky, and if you're a fan of young Bowmore, you can't go wrong with this one.
    • Nose
Campfire, wood smoke and ashy. Salty with wood spices, cinnamon maybe. Then a layer of fruitiness, mostly yellow fruits (banana) and maybe some tropical influence as well. Also creamy vanilla. The nose gets more sugary with time.
    • Taste
Creamy and mouthcoating with pepper and peat. More wood smoke and drying as well, but also very fresh at the same time. Not a lot of fruit here, maybe some citrus notes.
    • Finish
Mostly peat and ash. Both linger for quite some time.

  13. Peter87 scored this whisky 87 points Expert Senior

I did not notice the sherry influences.
    • Nose
peat smoke, glue / plastic, apples, cinnamon, actually applesauce, liquorice
    • Taste
peat, fruit, small bitter, drop / salmiak
    • Finish
drying, with peat, small licorice, liquorice, again salmiak, not so intense

    HWF VBT-6 sample 5
    • Nose
gun powder, sweet peat, smoke, plums, pepper, liquorice, some sulphur, leather, citrus, exotic fruits and dry fodder - biks
    • Taste
spices - cloves and nutmeg, sulphur, oily and pepper
    • Finish
very dry, peat, smoke, burned wood, some fudge, liquorice and Lapsang souchong tea

  15. Tomh scored this whisky 88 points Expert Junior

Blind tasted during HWF VBT -6 sample # 5. In my view a similar profile as a Port Charlotte. Second trial moment the sherry influences only picked up.
    • Nose
Peat, a lot of wood influence, wet wood. Orange, red fruit, figs & vanilla. Salt, which I can best describe as shells on the beach.
    • Taste
Very similar to the odors, peat, salted caramel, citrus (orange) mint, vanilla in the background. Fruity (red fruit, sherry) creamy.
    • Finish
Long, peat to the background, slightly nutty (incl. Salt).

I still doubt whether this is a refill sherry. I could clearly smell a huge amount of vanilla and bananas the first time. Afterwards, that was much less the case. The only thing that keeps shooting through my head is Bowmore, Bowmore, Bowmore. The smell and taste of that smoke, peat, that sweet and the burnt plastic remind me a lot of my Bowmore 1991 bottles (17yo and 14yo) from Dewar Rattray and the Bowmore 2001 Liquid Library. Although all those versions are noticeably sweeter than this sample. I keep it on a young Bowmore matured in a refill sherry (or hogshead). Possibly from Dewar Rattray. Do I like this? Mwajaa, kinda. But it could be a little more in the genre of the Laimrig or that Bowmore 2001 Liquid Library (refill sherry butt). EDIT: Remarkably, I scored this sample a lot lower (85) than my score (88) on WB. I assume that this has to do with the fact that my bottle was opened for a long time before I posted my notes on WB. That way the smell and smell of that burnt plastic had already faded for a long time, because in this sample I thought it was an 'off note' despite the combo peat / (refill) sherry.
    • Nose
1st time: BAM! Full blown vanilla. I immediately think of banana / vanilla liqueur. Then smoke, peat ... Hey, is this an Islay ?? After the peat comes ... burnt plastic. Yuk! Yep, this reminds me a lot of something. More on that later.
2nd time: Heavier smoke and peat, less sweet than the first time. With a very small amount of water (3 drops) the heavy smoke disappears and becomes even sweeter and fruity even.
    • Taste
1st time: Hoho, the peat and smoke just continue in the mouth. The burned plastic too, sometimes. After a while I get the impression that there is sherry involved (refill sherry?). The combo smoke / peat / sherry is close to my heart.
2nd time: Pretty much the same as last time. With some water: that sweet that starts to get the upper hand. Together with the peat and smoke, this is a pleasant combination, but from me there might be something more sherry to be detected
    • Finish
1st time: Reasonably smoky, medium and slightly salty
2nd time: After adding some water, the aftertaste is much longer and zilter.

Blind sample in the VBT of Het Whisky Forum.
    • Nose
Rather meaty sherry. Blueberry, toffee, earthy peat, orange, peanut, mango, papaya, raisin, peach and marshmallow.
    • Taste
Orange, earthy peat, toffee, roasted almond and a touch of tooth paste. A little sulphur.
    • Finish
      Peat, orange and toffee.

Nose : Yes, I was afraid of this, fortunately not as bad as an Ardbeg. But still: SMOKE! and underneath sherry. First thought is like HP. Musty hummus (earth). The peat is so prevalent that I do not smell the rest anymore. This is not going to be with me and this whisky.

Taste : Gatveredamme. As if you drink from the ditch. Bite dried peat yes. It gets better with water and you get more fruit and sherry influences.

Body : I know a lot, everything is broken now in terms of feeling in my mouth. But there's something oily about it.

Finish : worse than hoped for: long and everything narcotic. With water the ball gets better, with some more fruits and red fruit.

    Commentary : HWF VBT 6 # 5.
The smell best suited me to a Talisker. But that is not it. Is this the Ardbeg Uigeadail? I can taste that it is a quality whisky, has higher alcohol percentage and some sherry. So I'm just guessing.

I wanted to enjoy the remainder of the previous sample, but that is now over for today and tomorrow. Seriously I am piling this up in the next 24 hours.

This is a very nice Bowmore.  It has just what I like in an Islay whisky: peat and sherry.  Both in good balance and not overpowering the other one.  I can sip this for hours.  AND the flavour does not change even though the bottle has been opened a long time ago.  I've had different experiences with similar Bowmore editions.  Top notch Bowmore for me!

    sample from a friend
    • Nose
Delightfully on petrol and putty at first, though this turns to waxy
lemon, pepper, and a touch of earthy peat. A smidge of creamy vanilla.
The peat gets a really nice truffle quality. A sing;e drop of sea water,
and again more touches of plastic. Crushed grapeseed and linseed oil.
Just a bit of volatility and verve to keep it going. Intriguing and
      satisfying.
    • Taste
I liked the nose; the palate I like even more. That doesn't happen too
often! Oil, honey- a hint of bbq, cracked pepper. Motor oil and the
putty, the greasy kind from those cheap toys, with a bit more old
peat/bog. Ginger, vanilla, and something rather orangey. Very fine
stuff. Ashy at the front of the tongue and more earthiness like damp
      soil in an old wood.
    • Finish
Drat. Probably the weakest element of the show. Finish lasts a bit with
residual dryness and oil (it makes sense, I swear), but the heft of it
departs rather quickly. It's noticeable because this is so big in the
mouth and feels dense. Oily, less sweet, peaty/ashy bitterness. Wood is
all in check; this was bottled at the right time.
