  1. Bowmore Axel scored this whisky 88 points Connoisseur

Despite being only 12 years old, it looks much more mature.
    • Nose
      88 88
Sea aroma, salty, sweet, powerful, slightly fruity.
    • Taste
      90 90
Bitter - sweet, salty - mineral. Peach. Slightly smoky -
peaty. Slightly peppery tingling. Very fine.
    • Finish
      86 86
Like on the palate but slowly fading away.

The E150a ruins this bottle for me. Almost as much as a Dalmore. I am one of those purists who staunchly maintains that I CAN TASTE E150A COLORANT. This said, I'm not necessarily against good ole fashioned paxarette when the use of it is divulged on the label (which, frankly, never happened that I know of). Anyway, I get the usual "teeth set on edge" gritty mouthfeel from this HP. If it had been bottled at a higher cask strength without the deceptive chemicals then it would have been much better. For me, the Dumpy 18 with E150a was better but still kind of ruined due to the chemical in that as well. I do not collect old Dumpy bottle HP's for that reason, whereas I tend to gravitate to that same era from other distilleries that eschewed using unpleasantly "chewy" chemicals unfit even for Chewbacca.

  3. wisekycourse scored this whisky 84 points Connoisseur

an "old" HP of only 12 years!
sweet nose, sweet sherry quite young, a touch of fresh grass, an undeniable maritime side, same end but imposing
the mouth follows the same scents, with a dry woody.
final rather short, which requires to resume as for a good blend.

  4. Jean-Brice scored this whisky 82 points Expert Senior

    • Nose
very fresh, on chlorophyll, mint, ginger. Some touches of sherry.
    • Taste
it's less seductive, drier and austere
    • Finish
      short
