Ha, grotesque the "8" on it, you would immediately invent a story about it today, make NAS out of it so that there is no 8 on it and for 350-500 sell stuff like that.
    • Nose
Exciting, at first you notice the maritime notes clearly, dried fruit and nice salt, but then also some fresh coffee beans, black pepper, nutmeg, fennel, verbena, leather, licorice, lead, cherry stones and motor oil
    • Taste
Salty and fruity beginning, then camphor, cardamom, dark honey, dark toffee, leather, freshly brewed coffee, butter, ham, anise, eucalyptus, pomegranate, grapefruit, gross saliva, tobacco and fresh lime peel
    • Finish
Salt, licorice, malt, lemongrass, papaya, ginger, nutmeg, medium to long

A Legendary malt. Nuanced and powerful flavours. All the distillery character is here and in spades. The Malty, complex bitter profile isn’t going to be for everyone but for us this is wonderful stuff.

    From a mini (flat bottle):
A beast at full strength, with what feels like a rather heavy oak influence.
Playing with water is quite effective here and helps coax out the complexity.
    • Nose
Medium+, spicy and sweet. I find lots of oaky white pepper, allspice and cinnamon. Peppermint. Candied red apples, crystallised dried fruits.
Raisins, figs and a touch of ripe banana. Raspberry. Intense caramel notes. There's a salty, savoury undertow that remains difficult to put my finger on.
After a bit of time a lighter side opens up, with rather some heathery herbal notes and potpourri. Perhaps violets.
With water: very similar, but cleaner and softer. Fresh tropical fruits.
With more water: pretty nice, a couple additional mushrooms, complex earthy notes.
    • Taste
Huge, spicy. Certainly doesn't hide any of the abv. Slightly extractive with a lot of these notes of cinnamon, red peppercorn and cloves.
Alongside that sweet red fruits and small herbal complexities.
With water: Similar, still quite sharp. Prominent and unique notes of candied angelica and ginger.
With more water: Finally, sweet honey and caramel notes coming to the fore. A drier and slightly meaty midpalate.
    • Finish
Very long, spicy. Waxy cheeks. Crunching mint leaves. Apple skins, peach skins. Fresh cranberries.

    Tasted a miniature
    • Nose
Old fatty sherry, lots of OBE, dried orange, matches,
    • Taste
Fiery, dried fruits, candies, waxy, very minty, sweet, camphor, simple but very enjoyable. Dried mango.
    • Finish
      Long, minty, spicey, dried fruits.

dark fruits, sweet spices, toffee, leather, quite nice

  7. Dram Dracula scored this whisky 93 points Connoisseur

A very, very pleasant surprise here. If you tell me this is an older cask strength Clynelish of great repute, I would totally believe you. At 8 years old, get outta here, seriously?!?
    • Nose
Fresh, waxy, juicy. There's a certain heaviness here.
    • Taste
Wow, what an attack! A bit surprising, actually, even though I know that this is around 57% ABV. Also very fruity (another surprise!) with BIG complexity -- wet stones, flint, waxy, metallic, candied ginger, honey, zest.
    • Finish
No off flavors! This is another surprise! (from a 50ml mini, there's usually a bit of cardboard and metallic taste to it, but none here!)

Its pretty good and holds together well and much better than current official bottles for example the 21 year.

    WITH WATER

It is much smoother once the alcohol is tamed and it adds a few points for me.
    • Nose
wet straw, faint hints of Turkish delight but not a lot more.
    • Taste
In your face peat, caramel, toffee, traces of honey
    • Finish
Quite long on sweet toffee notes.

  10. MaltMartin scored this whisky 87 points Connoisseur

An intense Old Pulteney from the past.
    • Nose
Malty and grassy. Alcoholic. Fresh hedgerow greenness. Lots of citrus fruit. Herbal notes as well.
    • Taste
Hot and spicy (pepper). Oily and creamy. Fruity in particular oranges and tangerines. Slightly peaty.
    • Finish
Long with fruity sweetness. Some salt.
