    Bright copper. Medium slow legs.
Big rich and fruity Intoxicatingly rich. Dark cherries soaked in alcohol. Slight Ash. Soy sauce and the finest tobacco. Roasted almonds.
Mouth is incredible. Explosion of Dark fruits thick and rich feel. same flavours in the nose come on the palate Soy sauce and tobacco. Dark Chocolate orange liqueur and big rancio flavours. Alittle dry spice on the tongue.
long lasting. Some cola lollies, nutty rancio and boysenberry conserve on the finish.

A beautiful dark Oloroso sherry ... Sweet and tart on the palate paired with light woodiness ... Sweet figs on the finish, and after a while there is also a certain amount of dryness in the throat ...

    considerably different from the old
    batches i’ve
had, the nose was spot on. taste was a bit mild, alcoholic, somewhat salty and
    tangy. the finish was phosphorus
laden and drowning in spice. overall experience was not as pleasant as the old
batches which were fuller in flavor and well balanced

note: obviously a bad batch, yet still disappointing that it came out of a reputable distillery

Intense and heavily sherried. A rewarding whisky with deep flavours, if you take your time with it. Not an easy dram however, the sulphur and dryness can be offputting at times.

'Dark' and heavily sherried: raisins, polished wood, dark chocolate and coffee. Furthermore notes of blackberry jam, vanilla, vinegar, and subdued smoke reveal. A great nose!
    • Taste
      87 87
Heavy at first: alcoholic, dry (including wood tannins), slightly salty and quite some sulphur. Becomes more friendly with forest fruits, chocolate raisins, vanilla and balsamico.
    • Finish
      86 86
Quite intense with spices and a dry nuttiness dominating. There some jammy fruits too and oranges, unfortunately the sulphur reappears.

TASTING NOTE (LMDW): Color: amber. Nose: rich and fine at the same time, it is marked by the wine of sherry oloroso and its developments: notes of mushroom, raisins, nut liqueur, all raised by a herbaceous freshness. It evolves on rancio, cherries with rural impressions. Remarkable. Palate: ample and powerful, very marked by sherry. It reveals hints of chocolate, dried fruits (dates, figs), prunes and then becomes over the sips more and more coffee, orange and spices (cloves, nutmeg, cinnamon). Rancio crowns everything. Final: long, on spices and black fruits (blackcurrant).

  12. KayMeertens scored this whisky 88 points Connoisseur

In head-to-head comparison with the 2012 bottling, this one seems a bit smoother with a little more of that creamy butterscotch / caramel sweetness and also a lighter candied fruitiness at the expense of the really dark raisin notes. More oloroso instead of PX perhaps? Separately it would be impossible to tell them apart though and I can't pick a favourite. Still one of the best whiskies available in this price range.
    • Nose
Cherry, butterscotch, toffee, mocha, raisin, orange, peach, vanilla, prune, marshmallow and almond.
    • Taste
Sherry, caramel, raisin, prune, vanilla, orange, mocha, dark chocolate, pepper and a little malt.
    • Finish
Raisins, prunes, caramel and dark chocolate.

Remarkably consistent bottling, very similar to the previous 2009 release that I tried. Once again, the real beauty is the nose. It`s so full and rich, with the glorious oloroso sherry to the fore, but not masking other wonderful notes, including fresh mint, orchard fruits and roasted chestnuts. Slightly less complex on the palate, but a lovely long, warming finish lingers long in the memory. Remarkably, this isn`t far off the quality of some of the single cask releases from Glendronach that cost considerably more. Great price:quality ratio. Great that it is bottled at 46%, with no colouring or chill-filtration.
