The darker version of the Bowmore 12 years - in the liter bottle (Travel Retail) - only bottled until 2013 - a neat malt with great value for money!
    • Nose
      pleasant nose; tender peat smoke, dark fruits, sweet sherry;
    • Taste
      great approach, dark fruits, sherry aromas, sweetness, honey, campfire smoke, a bit woody, spicy oak, salt, well-balanced;
    • Finish
      medium length finish; sweet cherries and smoke fade away;

I found - at least THIS bottling and 2012/2013 - super good.

There's nothing there. For me it is superfluous.
    • Nose
      70 70
Hardly any smoke, very light. Some cocoa powder and ripe, dark fruits.
    • Taste
      65 65
A bit spicy at the beginning, some smoke and then dominating something like hay. In addition a little prickle on the tongue. Well, you have to like it. (I do not do it).
    • Finish
      65 65
Very short, a little lighter smoke and then it's gone.

  10. Portfolioman scored this whisky 82 points Expert Senior

Actually, a wonderful, smoky sherry keg whisky, which is unfortunately a bit too weak with 40%. very tasty, easy to drink
    • Nose
      cold campfire smoke, honey
    • Taste
Smoke (cold ash) that spreads in the mouth, sherry sweetness, herbaceous, overall pleasant the 40% are too little, a bit thin
    • Finish
      smoky, sweet

  11. Albaron scored this whisky 82 points Specialist

Well, not bad, a simple standard, but nothing more, can not quite convince. This vegetable note bothers a bit, as well as this caramel flavor, which seems a bit contrived, it would be better Bowmore would not use E150a and a little more alcohol might do him good too.
    • Nose
somewhat oily, slightly maritime, moist raisins, slightly bitter, dark caramel, a green note of vegetables, like spring onions but only very weak, with a hint of smoke
    • Taste
a bit bitter, with herbs, the green notes of vegetables from the nose are also here, the raisins too, but not so juicy, the dark caramel also comes from the dye, of which here is probably plenty in it, to the end again bitter
    • Finish
Bitter from the caramel and the barrel, plus some smoke and then a few raisins

  15. irrerelevant scored this whisky 83 points Expert Senior

good allrounder, but nothing special, lacks some substance and character. The 12-year old does it better for me
    • Nose
has a bit of everything: peat, sherry, vanilla, caramel, apple, pear, but nothing is outstanding
    • Taste
same as the nose, touch of oak, quite thin, little winy
    • Finish
      short, thin, smoke, dry oak

  16. SeBerto scored this whisky 50 points Member Junior

    • Nose
Bacon, grill, alcohol, salt, sherry, peppermint, spice printen
    • Taste
      Smoky sweetness, seawater, honey sweet

  17. malthead-sven scored this whisky 84 points Expert Senior

Young enough to keep enough smoke and Bowmore character, due to the better barrel maturity, too old to oppose sherry and oak, slightly maritime but anything but stormy, the 15's darkest more similar than the 12's
    • Nose
very soft smoke, not as citrusy as the normal 12 year old, but raisins and honey, a bit flowery
    • Taste
woody, cold campfire smoke covers the cheeks, mild, mild due to the 40% with low sweetness
    • Finish
clear oak, dark cherries and spicy gingerbread, medium length

  20. irrerelevant scored this whisky 83 points Expert Senior

Eierlegendewollmilschsau, something of everything, smoke, sherry, vanilla, caramel, apple / pear, a little oak, sweet malt, a little vinous in the mouth, great all-rounder, but a bit weak-chested

  21. Kantenmechaniker scored this whisky 83 points Connoisseur

a little better than the standard 12er, like a mellower darkest
    • Nose
light smoke, sherry, somehow musty, citrus notes, raisins, after the first sip also milk chocolate
    • Taste
begins modestly, oily, light smoke, sherry, grapes, oak
    • Finish
a spicy note comes out stronger, becoming drier, medium long

  22. Tabrulavubeg scored this whisky 84 points Expert Senior

Well-drinkable, basically good sherry Bowmore, yet not overly complex and definitely short of sufficient alcoholic strength.

  23. [2stoned] aKu scored this whisky 84 points Expert Senior

I find this successful than the normal 12 and in the liter bottle he has a great PLV. A very good introductory smoker, if you do not want to deter anyone with a peat bomb. There are nat. many malts that are more complex and voluminous.
    • Nose
Smoke with some Black Forest ham, some lemon and leather, the smoke comes back and a slight honey sweetness comes to light, in a short moment something tender cotton candy
    • Taste
light sweetness, smoke and sea, blackcurrant, some dark chocolate, no alk. sharpness
    • Finish
again blackcurrant, peaty, leathery, earthy, a little bit sweet, but a little drier, medium long

    The chocolate is really awesome.
At the price definitely buy again.
    • Nose
fruity slightly pleasant smoke Cherry (cocktail cherries) sherry notes light mint walnut honey hay
    • Taste
dry sherry Oak slightly bitter dark chocolate rosemary
    • Finish
      just malzig

  25. ASWhisky scored this whisky 84 points Connoisseur

a very harmonious whisky, which nevertheless has tension
and acts through a constant interplay of flavors like encrypted
    Enigma's name is Motto
He looks feminine on me with a dark, seductive side
he wants something from us, but he shows it to us gently
    he is not my whisky,

but I want to know him in my stock

and drink with friends on occasion
I had this same argument today
In principle, I agree with you
many say he should be high percent, just have a bit more drive
So basically a good idea, it could make the Enigma a bit racy
    but maybe,
    exactly the Enigma motto
    the gentle mysterious encryption
    get lost with it
    what makes him so special

I think if you want to understand a whisky
you should try to understand the idea behind it
    • Nose
dark fruit and herbs, very pleasant
    • Taste
soft dark fruit (like we red plum), in the background freshly raised peaty soil> coffee and clearly chocolate> pleasantly gentle peat smoke and intense spiciness> sea salt and sherry sweetness
bright notes of lemon and hay
    • Finish
      tall, Tabak am Meer

  26. granella2003 scored this whisky 91 points Connoisseur

A really grat Islay-sherried whisky. Great druma relatively low cost priced.
    • Nose
Sherry, red fruit a swiff of smoke
    • Taste
Green olives in brine immersed in sherry and sour cherries in syrup. Again red fruit (red/black currant?) blueberries?, lighlty salted and medium peaty. Smoke in the finish
    • Finish
Medium to long. With the light smoke more persistent.

      WONDERFUL!!!

  29. Koning scored this whisky 83 points Expert Senior

I rate this 12 year old Enigma slightly higher than the regular Bowmore 12. Even more, a litre bottle Enigma costs about the same as a 70cl bottle of Bowmore 12!
    • Nose
Gentle and sweet peat, sea spray, hint of lemons. Adding water reveals some musty dough-like aromas (both in the nose and palate) that I find typical for Bowmore whiskies.
    • Taste
Sherry sweetness and a bit salty and smokey, very well balanced. Also some slight bitterness or tannins.
    • Finish
Gentle smoke and salt, followed by a fresh and juicy mouth feel, noticeably citrus fruits.
