  1. Calmar scored this whisky 84 points Connoisseur

A modest and rather flat whisky, but at the same time there is something harmonious and whole in it, smooth, drinkable, uncomplicated.
    • Nose
Closed, dry, old furniture, furniture varnish, some dried herbs, light mineral undertones, apple marshmallow, very thin and flat.
    • Taste
Slender, flat, continuation of the aroma, everything is very modest - oak, furniture varnish, coffee, creamy notes - fudge, toffee; nougat, dark chocolate, some minerality, old leather goods
    • Finish
Soft, refreshing, old leather goods, furniture lacquer, spicy oak, creamy shades, hints of burnt caramel, stout, coffee.

Pours medium dark gold, scent is mild, some oak. Taste is medium, very gentle. Very grainy, milder oloroso oak than the 12 to me. Complex finish. Bit dry, mild nuttyness.

Quick hit review. Tasted in 06/2016 and 06/2018.

Compared to the benchmark Glenfiddich 12, this 15-year-old Solera Vat is definitely a step up in quality. Ripe apples, banana and grapes are quite prominent on the nose, while fresh spices and subtle sherry notes add some complexity. On the palate, the fruity notes are pushed to the side, with vanilla cream, honey and cinnamon driving the development. The aromatic finish does not stick around for long, but at this price it is hard to complain.

Such a drink, in which there is a little bit of everything, which makes its character unclear.

Sweet, Belgian waffles, dark dry berries, prune jam, hay.
    • Taste

    Notes from 4/26/14:

Nice concept and a nice whisky! I think more distilleries ought to use a solera so we can see how they change over time! This one is a a solera of sherry, bourbon and new oak whiskies.

Nose: Sweet, bright, fruity, maraschino cherries, Christmas spices, slight wood, great balance.
Palate: Drier, woodsier but still with the cherry spice.
Finish: Driest, cherry flavor lost to a grassy note.

Easy drinker. I really like it.

One can especially highlight the pleasant and rich nose. Unfortunately, the palate cannot keep up here. There were certainly many, many refill kegs there and certainly some with a sting that were hidden in this huge batch. But that's the way it is when hundreds of thousands of bottles want (should) be filled ...
Nevertheless, the 15-year-old offers significantly more than the younger brother, the 12-year-old. Well suited for newbies on a tight budget, whose journey of discovery is just beginning.
    • Nose
      85 85
Soft, at the same time fresh and balanced nose. No alcohol noticeable.
Banana, apple, caramel, lemon, vanilla, greased leather, honey, ginger.
    • Taste
      81 81
As was to be expected, unfortunately a bit watery and not quite as balanced in taste as its aroma.
      Oak seasoning, orange, some cardboard
    • Finish
      81 81
Medium-long and slightly musty finish. What remains is vanilla, tannins and apple.

Perfect for beginners Very sweet honey fruity
The solera system makes the old section feel like old wine. It is not suitable for people who seek multiple levels of sense and taste.

      Fruit Barrel
    • Taste
      85 85
Honey faint spice and alcohol stimulation. The mellow feeling of old wine in the later stage

    Alcohol: 40%
Aroma: Apples, cinnamon, all in sherry garb. Dried meadow flowers, juicy fruitiness, maltiness. (86 pts)
Taste: The 40% is already tea for me, the mushroom is more spoiled. :-) Sherry, honey, light sweetness, sweetness. (84 pts)
    Points: 85/100
Summary: I have a bottle about half way, so I decided to write impressions. Even in its more modern weaker version, it still has much to offer, but the old version of 43% already has cult status in my idealized memories.

I have to say my view is different from average. First I hate dates, and this one is full of it. There's smoky sense of this but not decent at all, it is wired. It is very sour but most of my friend do not feel it properly. Somehow this may be a fine malt but I just do not like it.

  21. AdamsB scored this whisky 79 points Expert Senior

The whisky matures in American and European oak barrels, and in new American white oak barrels. The distillates are mixed in an oak vat filled in half with 15-year distillate. Then it goes to a ladle made of Portuguese oak.

  22. Thermidor scored this whisky 81 points Connoisseur

This is for me the calibration whisky par excellence. It has a little wisp of everything (smoke, sherry sweetness, bourbon cask fruitiness, and a bit of peat), which makes it a perfect mirror for almost any other whisky in existence. By itself it is a nice drop, although it pales in comparison to any four or five star whisky. There seems to be a lot of consistency between bottles, where it stays mostly the same apart from whether the nose is more yeasty or more sweet in a given bottle. I tend to give it 80 or 81 points depending on whether the yeast dominates or not.

  23. Totoro scored this whisky 82 points Connoisseur

The typical Glenfiddich notes on the nose. Soft floral aromas, vanilla, marzipan. A bit grassy, a bit vinous. There’s also something lactic and sherbetty about it. Discreet, creamy nuttiness from the sherry casks. The nose is rather soft-spoken and feels a bit thin. Pleasant, but thin. (Or: thin, but pleasant, if you’re in a glass-half-full kind of mood.)

It’s just as well-behaved on the palate, though the virgin-oak casks generate a zingy zap of fresh tannins that bristle on the tip of the tongue. Somewhat bourbon-like, if you will. Sweet, silky, juicy, with an ever-so-soft prickle towards the death. The finish is made up of one-half mouthwatering citrus and one-half terribly tame tannins. Gone in an instant, though, signalling to you that it’s time for another sip...

To sum up: a single malt that behaves like an upscale blend. Easy drinking; perfect if you’re in the mood for a soft Scotch that doesn’t require a whole lot of deciphering.

On the nose, there's a tangy bitterness. Quite woody, and an odd "gluey" note. Some dried fruit.

On the pallette this is quite dry and tannic, with restrained light sugar sweetness. There's a tangy mouthwatering sourness to it

I'm not a massive fan. It feels the cask has taken over from the spirit.

In my experience, the nose needs a bit of time to open completely with this one. Despite the musty notes, it was still an enjoyable dram, and this is the first time I've had these notes with this whisky. It may well have been the bottle. Generally though, this is a good casual sipping whisky.
    • Nose
Yeasty mixed grain bread and butterscotch, raisin and sherry,
earthy walnut oil, clove and spiced dried fruits, marmalade/orange oil and
dried leaf litter, a hint of rubber and wood-char, soft oak tannins
    • Taste

and tangerines, mixed cereal grains, fuji apples and spice (cinnamon and clove)
    • Finish
charred (slightly musty) oak tannins and hay, candle wax,

This is definitely a nosing whisky, the smells and nuances you get from it are fascinating and hint at a much older age than just 15 years. Unfortunately, the palate doesn't quite hold up to this, it's a little bit too thin and flattish to convey a really great and coherent experience. But don't forget we're talking about a whisky you can buy for less than 40 quid, which means that this still is an almost unbeatable bang for your buck offer when it comes to medium sherried Speysiders.
I so wish that Glenfiddich would launch a cask strength version of the Solera!
    • Nose
Fruity, rich, spicy, juicy and balanced. A fantastic nose! I get melons, apricot jam, plums, juicy peaches and thick pulpy orange juice. Yes, it's very jammy and juicy. Behind that a backbone of maple syrup, cocoa and polished oak furniture. This noses older than its 15 years, and the casks that were used must have been top notch.
    • Taste
Soft and smooth on the tongue. Very easy-to-drink. Sweet and spicy. It's still fruity, but not as succulent and rich as on the nose. Honey, orange zest, Chinese plum wine, chocolate and caramel. In the background there's something peppery and savoury. All in all very nice flavours, but you can feel that the whisky lost something of its vibrancy on the palate due to dilution and chillfiltration.
    • Finish
Medium, jammy, slightly drying and silky.

Colour: amber and even darker than that. Queue for Sherry cask

Nose: a balanced combination of flowers and fresh fruit. Cereals, Barley also pops up delicately.

Taste: Strong taste, but at the same time well balanced, smooth almost creamy. Malt a bit more pronounced, fruit becomes richer, but also a bit of citrus (orange peels), Sherry cask signature.

Finish: Long, smooth finish, all flavours in harmony. Sweet, fruity.

    Bottle typical of Glenfiddich

Much depth. Takes water well. This is a great Glenfiddich. Opening up, and showing character to the last drop. Simply great.

w/ water - full, sweet, fresh dark fruit (peeled/sliced) citrus peel, spicy.
    • Taste

w/ water - short, sweet-warm arrival. Immediate spicy development, hints of aromatic herbs and lavender.

by far better than the 12-year-old. After drying, the dry taste is completely unexpected. The departure makes it right again. In contrast to the green 12er a very good value for money.
    • Nose
Honey-sweetened fruit salad with raisins, malty, alcoholic notes
    • Taste
clearly dry, a bit malty, should be the alcohol. With time comes the sweetie. For 40% strong start.
    • Finish
the best of everything. Amazingly long, with both honey sweetness and clear tannins, quite a pleasant combination.

Taste - Vanilla, oak wood, red berries, Ginger, spicy, oak, toffee, rich sherry, strong mouth feel, juicy, pepper and red berries.

Finish - Long last finishing, oak with spicy.

Extra - Give this whisky time to breathe and open up, stronger then I remember in the mouth. Add a single drop of water and it changes, becoming more delicate.

This is well-composed. A very affordable bottle that offers a lot more than the 12yo. Reminds me somewhat of Arran’s 14yo.
    • Nose
Sweet and herbal. Honey and yellow fruits, such as plums and pears.
Slightly sherried, with a touch of hazelnut peel and oak. Becomes more
complex after a few minutes. Initially, the bourbon barrels shine
      through a little more.
    • Taste
Fragrant, but the 40% ABV really show – in a bad way. Well-balanced
between juicy sweetness and fresh floral overtones. A selection of
stewed fruit, like apples and strawberries. Menthol and toffee.
    • Finish
Rather short. Caramel and mildly tannic. No bitterness, but no chocolate or big vanilla sensations either.

  55. jparrish56 scored this whisky 87 points Member Senior

Initial reaction was not impressed, after putting a few drops of water and letting it sit out for about 30 minutes the finish and overall taste improved dramtically. I would recommend tasting it neat, then with a bit of water to see which way you prefer. It is a low ABV bottling so it doesn't take much. The finish is quite a surprising change after allowing it to breathe for a little while. 87/100
    • Nose
Smooth on the nose, a little bit of water really helps to open up some of the dried fruit notes. The mix of the syrup notes from the bourbon maturation mixed with the dried fruit from the sherry casks is a pleasant way to start.
    • Taste
Full bodied, maple syrup with a bit of pear and some slight hints of floral, after a little bit the flavor moves to a heavier oak taste even a little bit smokey.
    • Finish
Medium to long finish. The aged oak flavors linger on the back of hte pallate for about 90-180 seconds.
