    02/27/2015:
Commerce in its purest form. Without claims to recognizability, but also does not cause disgust. If necessary, you can drink without problems.
    • Nose
On the crust there is an obvious sweet beer theme, beer malt. Bourbon, iris, a little medical freshness, malt, cake, apple, lemon lollipop, a little hardened paint, sour berries, dust, varnishes and perfume, non-alcoholic, restrained, not bright.
    • Taste
Sweet, creamy, fruity, dry and fresh, raisins and dried apricots.
    • Finish
Shorter than medium, dry, creamy, raisins.

    Notes from 5/4/14:

Just over $20 for standard bottle - nice value.

Nose: Sweet, fruity. Fresh rubber - young spirit. Bananas foster, marshmallow.
Palate: Sweet here too. Lots of vanilla. Creamy.
Finish: Some darker flavors in the finish - caramel corn, tiche of molasses. Oddly enough, I get sugar snap peas on the late finish. I'm thinking some of these flavors that linger in the finish are from some older stock blended in.

A good whisky for the price! Refreshingly different. Reminds me a bit of Loch Lomond 17 years Cask Strength, just not stop in Cask Strength;)
PLV could give you 88-89 - objectively it is enough for 85-86

Is probably such a whisky that you can not rate ü80, because it costs under 30 ¬. What else does the neighbor think of me ...?

The mouthfeel was oilier than expected, and it's not as youthful as I thought it was going to be.
    • Nose
A touch of honeysuckle, funnel cake with powdered sugar, sweet apples, honeyed barley and oak, a touch of crystallized ginger, tart apples, and a mix of almond and walnut oil.
    • Taste
Apples and fresh autumn leaf litter, baking spices, mixed bitter-sweet citrus (orange, lemon, pomelo, and tangerines), barley grain and soft oak, and bitter peaches and tart raspberries.
    • Finish

    An uncomplicated beginner's whisky.
    • Nose
Very cute. Caramel. Coconut. Beeswax candle. A touch of citrus freshness
    • Taste
Mild and light. Not quite as sweet as the nose, but still delicious caramel. A touch of oak. Very tasty.
    • Finish
Rather short and mild, but the delicious caramel sweetness remains. Very late a hint of chocolate on the palate.

Has great fruit and sweet notes. The whisky is very tasty, has good thickness and smell. Very good value for money.

  14. ApricotOne scored this whisky 79 points Expert Senior

A fruity malt, here rather the bright, sweet fruits like pineapple, green apple. The barrel stays discreetly in the background.
Unfortunately, the youth in the form of a metal mouthfeel noticeable.
A malt that is interesting throughout, as you get presented a lot of distillery distillers. The smell of the fermentation smelling of a distillery sight is well captured here

    • Nose
Simple. Not much depth, very soft, malt taste is not very present.
    • Taste
Hmmm, well balanced, bit of citrus
    • Finish
Aftertaste is not long, taste itself is tasty. Little apple and pear showing. For the price a good whisky.

[September, 2017] Does maturation time matter? Sure, but how much and is a longer maturation always better? Not so sure on this, that is why I do a head-to-head of three Tomatin at different ages: This NAS "Legacy" (WB id 41415 that I bought for 21,50 Euro in March, 2015) versus the 12-year old (WB id 58291 that I bought for 23,50 Euro in March, 2015) versus the 18-year old (WB id 11380 that I bought for 55 Euro in September, 2014).

Colour: The colour is adjusted using caramel on all three releases so it useless to analyse it. But for the records, the NAS is at jonquiripe corn, the 12y two shades darker at yellow gold and the 18y another two shades darker at amontillad. Perfectly designed but with no significance, unfortunately. The texture of the NAS shows medium fast legs with small tears, the 12y has many fast legs and late fat tears while the 18y shows late sticky tears that slowly build legs.

Nose: The NAS offers a rather immature nose on strong malty and nutty aromas with some fruits in the background that nevertheless is not too bad at all. The 12y shows some modern style sherry aromas but little more than this. The 18y offers more mature sherry aromas together with nice fruity and wooden notes. Clearly I like the 18y best followed surprisingly by the NAS that I find significantly better than the rather one-dimensional 12y.

Initial mouthfeel: The NAS arrives warming and a little coating with slight astringent moments from tannins. The 12y is less coating but without the drying feeling of the NAS, too. The 18y is not much coating too and shows significant more drying moments (tannins again) than the other two. Here I like the 12y most followed by the NAS with the 18y being weakest of the three.

Taste: The 18y offers the broadest flavours spectrum of the three with really delicious barley sugary, sherry sweet and fruity flavours. No flaws that I can detect. The 12y owns a malty driven profile with some sugary sweet flavours and a few sherry-induced aromas that, again, is rather one-dimensional. The NAS is malt-driven too with some more spices from the woods. This round the 18y takes with a significant margin followed by the NAS. The 12y is clearly last.

Finish: The finish of the NAS is of medium length and rather sweet without distracting bitter or drying moments. The 12y owns a rather short finish with some minor drying notes (papers). The 18y finish is of medium length and adds more exotic fruity flavours to the profile that are really delicious here. No distracting moments with the 18y. So this round clearly takes the 18y. I like NAS better than the 12y, again.

Water is not needed on any of the drams. It turns them smoother (what I like) but it takes out a lot of power, too (what I do not like). The nose of the 18y really improves with some drops added (more exotic fruits, one point up).

An interesting result: Except for the mouthfeel the 18y wins all dimensions with a clear margin (so maturation time really adds more and deeper flavours) but the young NAS (most probably around 8 years old) beats the 12y on all these dimensions, too. But I guess that they added some older casks to the "Legacy" that provided these additional aromas profile - what is a usual practice these days. So, NAS not always is too bad...

By the way: I just repeated this head-to-head with a visitor that is very new into single malt whisky (and without telling him my results). He came to the same conclusion: 18y best, then NAS "Legacy" as a runner-up and 12y being clearly last. Incidental? No, "it is as it is" (a famous slogan in the german region I live in).

A very quaffable Tomatin with no frills. Typical drinking dram that will put a smile on your face if you are sipping it on a summery terrace (like me, writing these notes in the French Provence by the poolside in 30°C weather). Oh, feel free to add a cube of ice.
    • Nose
The nose is very sweet on vanilla and coconut with fresh touches of citrus. A truckload of juicy honey adds to that sweetness. It also offers up a lovely dose of caramel. It is not complex (at all), but very summery and pleasant.
    • Taste
Wonderfully oily. It rolls silky soft across the tastebuds. There is a little spiciness present as if from pepper and some liquorice. The fruit of the nose returns, although the emphasis is now on citrus. Some fresh green apples surface.
    • Finish
The finish is very short and shows a bitterness at the death.

With the very nice nose, he can score points, on the tongue and only right in the finish, he then significantly after.
    • Nose
Sugared canned pineapple and pear. The fruit note looks a bit artificial. Vanilla, honey. In addition a grainy and malty note.
    • Taste
Far less fruit than in the nose. On the tongue outweighs the cereal note. In addition, milk chocolate, wood shavings, vanilla and bitter honey.
    • Finish
Rather short, dry, slightly bitter and woody.

Bottle bought 23/04/14 on Mr Murray's recommendation (94.5 JM pts)

I was very impressed with the price/ quality ratio and the way the separate nose elements were so well defined:

Fantastic mouth watering barley. Apples and pears fruit notes, meets vanilla custard, then spicy oak. Complex, with earthy barrel/ pastry? on the nose too and back and forth between the different dimensions, great value. Good all the way down the bottle =What a drinker!!

    Concerning price/performance ratio: 7/10

A light single malt, certainly a bit unspectacular, but the sweetness on the palate remains sticky and leaves a lasting impression. In the overall impression it is unfortunately flat but combined with the low price a whisky with good PLV - 22.10.2016
    • Nose
Malt sweetness, cereals, very light, exotic fruits, pineapple, grapefruit, fermented fruit, white wine
    • Taste
Significant sweetness that lasts long and spreads throughout the mouth, brown sugar, creamy sweet really hits it, dry, walnut followed by bitterness

    • Nose
Vanilla sweetness, citrus fruits, sour green apple, slightly alcoholic
    • Taste
Very sweet and fruity towards apple and pear, but unfortunately also quite sprittig
    • Finish

Too bad. I once had an original free sample and I have to say, this was just the opposite. Super sweetsweet and very soft and tasty. This one unfortunately made me very disappointed. As if it were a completely different whisky.
    • Nose
Something sweet that is immediately displaced by a sharp alcohol. After some time in the glass, a smell comes up, like unpacking a candy. Some vanilla and light citrus notes. Above all lies this sharp smell of alcohol.
    • Taste
Very spicy fruit sweetness. Vanilla. Ne fruit note that I can not name. Alkohlschärfe pushes.
    • Finish
Short to medium. Becoming a bit bitter. But unfortunately also very sprittig.

    Disappointment. Whisky-acclaimed exceptional NAS whisky.
Could not convince at all. Have tasted it several times. I found this chemical-artificial note very unpleasant. Irrerelevant has named "Brause" in his tasting below. This description fits quite well too; is for me personally but negatively proven when it serves to flavor a whisky.

Know and love many Tomatins, but this one is not in the portfolio of the distillery.
    • Nose
Very artificial. Very cute. Associations with artificial exotic fruit cream sweets. A touch of vanilla in the background.
    • Taste

Tomatin used to be the largest distillery in Scottland. In former
decades, more than 20 pot stills produced millions upon millions litres
of spirit each year, but, as it happened to be, they rarely released
single malt bottling on their own. The few single casks that were
released in the early 2000s or before were already quite expensive and
did not really resonate with the market. So far my research! I’m glad
that Tomatin has recovered from their quantity-focused days and is now
producing quality malt whisky. While this one exhibits a little more
condensed tropical fruits, it reminds me a lot of Glen Grant’s
equivalent, The Major’s Reserve nonetheless. If you need something for
an evening with friends who enjoy easy-drinking whisky, this is worth
considering. Goes down like oil, affordable, and tasty to boot.
    • Nose
Sweet and fruity. Pears, bananas, peaches, and mango. After the initial
fruit-bravado, there is vanilla and a little oak. Everything as expected
so far but still quite pleasant; despite its straight-forwardness.
    • Taste
Moderately full-bodied. Refreshingly vivid, with caramel and a little
cardboard. It probably contains a few very young casks. Apples, a little
      peppery, and unripe watermelon.
    • Finish
Medium-short. Tannins come off late, but there is also a slight hint of
European oak to be found here. Lemon-infused milk chocolate perhaps.

    • Nose
Citrus aromas and malt flood the nose. Sweet, a trail of bourbon barrels.
    • Taste
Malty, slightly bitter and vanilla After some time in the mouth, some sweetness sets in, plus honey. Otherwise a bit monotonous and not very complex. But pleasantly mild and definitely a whisky for my girlfriend. Perfect for a warm summer evening.

The taste and especially the finish don't really deliver as the spirit is probably too young, but I can recommend every whisky noob who spends 20 euros on a blend (yes, there are a few exceptions) to spend it on a bottle of this stuff instead.
    • Nose
Very sweet. Peach, malt sugar, caramel, lime, strawberry, cherry, cactus, banana and whipped cream. Starts off with the fruity notes but gets creamier after a while, with even some whipped cream.
    • Taste
Caramel, banana, malt, vanilla and cranberry.
    • Finish
      Caramel, vanilla and raspberry.

    Sweet, young, surprisingly varied.

    No mandatory purchase.
    • Nose
A barrage of ripe pineapple, bacon and some vanilla. Behind it is an association of sugared ketchup.
    • Taste
Tingling on the tongue, sweet with a hint of lemon. Then a surprisingly strong chili-catch, vll. Pepper? Finally, vanilla again, a little caramel.
    • Finish
Short and slightly metallic, a bit of wood. A noticeably young whisky.

Simple and yet very sneaky. By an aging in american oak bourbon barrels and ex is a

clear soft tone of vanilla and a hint of honey, in addition to

these familiar flavors is wood and a fresh tone of citrus added by the

    American oak
