Crystal clean nose, showing off the full profile of the Lagavulin distillate. Plenty of soft peat smoke and salty air alongside the trademark Lagavulin fruitiness that distinguishes it from its neighbouring South Coast distilleries (to my nose anyway!). Incredibly, it was fully approachable neat (even at the crazy 64.4% strength!!!), but a drop of water certainly didn't hurt. A short time in the glass brought through some more 'industrial' notes (engine oil and a hint of rubber) and a hint of the farmyard too (including some fresh hay). Crystal clean on the palate too, with a profile that is sharp and direct (plenty of citrus fruits, sea salt, peat smoke with grassy notes emerging on the addition of water). A few drops of water (it could take it!) brought forward considerable additional fruity sweetness. Lingering, smoky finish (with some attractive mineral elements in the mix). A thoroughly invigorating (even austere without water), high quality malt that gives you a real idea where Lagavulin has evolved from. A lovely taste of Islay history.
