[October, 2017]  Every other year I (re)taste a standard Macallan simply to check if things improved in the meantime.  Unfortunately, it got worst only so far.  So I bought this dram at the hotel bar tonight (this is by far the most expensive whisky here, ridiculous!).  By the way, I use my own appropriate tasting glass to do this review...

The colour is amber what is not relevant anyhow as they use caramel to adjust it.  The texture shows a few medium fast legs and a few late tears.  The nose is ... no, this is not whisky - this is the nose of a glass of pure dry sherry wine (I know such a nose very well as I often drink a glass of sherry at restaurants before dinner, to support the whisky industry with empty sherry casks...).  Oh my god, this is really a shame!  No whisky aroma at all and the profile is bland and immature.  I clearly prefer the nose of the sherry wine over that!!!  It arrives in the mouth hot and peppery with just a very little coating effect.  The taste is not much better, some barley sugars and sherry wine flavours (please note:  these are quite different to sherry cask-induced whisky flavours), that's it!  The finish is short and owns absolutely nothing that is remarkable.  Somehow this smells and tastes as if there was quite a substantial amount of liquid sherry wine still in the cask when they filled the new make in (you know, this is strictly forbidden by Scottish law!).

Macallan has reached a point now where I use the spittoon instead of swallowing the rest of the dram.  This once so mighty whisky was killed by the pure greediness of its owners (an investment group) and it is a shame to offer such a bad whisky quality to consumers at all - taking into account the price point it is ... impertinence!

PS:  Sorry to all the folks that love this whisky but I grew up with a very different quality of Macallan (it was that quality what made Macallan famous, not today's).  But if you really enjoy the modern "designed" Macallan this is absolutely fine with me - you can have all of it (I will buy the next dram to (re)taste in 2020 earliest)...

Of everything more than "gold" and "amber", much more complex and full-bodied and still somewhat watery
    • Nose
Sherry and blood orange, tangerine, cinnamon and cloves, Christmas market scents, chocolate and coffee
    • Taste
Sherry, orange, spices for the Christmas bakery, dried fruits, Chinese ginger sweets
    • Finish
      Medium and warm

I think it's really delicious. Definitely too expensive, but still tasty.

Very good, round, volume, light and fruity, apple, not really my favorite taste profile, but very cool here. Doesn't look like a typical NAS. Sherry is also there, subtle, but also well integrated again.

At first a bit thin, but then comes a surprising breadth that stays long and tasty on the palate.

    - a very pleasant single malt with a mild one
    sweet and slightly spicy character,
    - very good NAS whisky
    - significantly better than the AMBER
    - you notice here the better barrel selection combined
    with older vintages
    - very fruity and dangerous compared to the RUBY
    tasty
    - for the originally about 70 € fully in order
    - for me in the PLV the best of the series: 1824
    • Nose
clearer sweet sherry, dark fruits, despite NAS a "higher" well matured age is recognizable
    • Taste
soft, slightly spicy onset, dark fruits, grapes, a subtle spice on the back
    • Finish
      medium-long, soft fruity finish;
      medium-length sherry aftertaste, becoming dry

An official Macallan. Mainly I tend to try one or two on a festival, but havn't found a proper one yet which has a good price-quality ratio.
This one is from a blind sample swap.

Long story short: oké nose, less so the taste, disappointing finish. Well overpriced.

Sweet red fruit. Candy, like these sweets which different wrapping, but with the same taste. Fruit mentos. It is not a bad nose, but a bit doctored.

Thin. Sweet but a bit watery, this could have been way better. I assume chill-filtration striped away a load of oils and fat. This is just

Short-medium length. Rather disappointing. Just a sweet burst hint of malt in the back aaaaaand..... gone.

Not bad by any means, but also not special and definitely overpriced.
Well, maybe the finish is the biggest down side because it is very, very short.
