    Blind sample.

My guess was Dalmore 12/15. It tastes like what I imagine e150 tastes like. Synthetic oranges, synthetic chocolate, borderline cloying. If fake news was a whisky. Seriously screw this crap. I’ll never buy a Macallan and while I’m not their target audience, you bet I’d never recommend them either. It’s a malt for yesterday.

Edit: I should also add that while this was a blind sample, a few of the next blinds were glendronach 15 and 18. Both of which were ass over teakettle better than the Macallan Amber.

    Conclusion and pictures on: https://tomtrinkt.de
    • Nose
Very mild onset and surprisingly lightly alcoholic, although the malt has an "only" 40% alcohol content. Even after 15 minutes, the minimal stinging in the nose has not completely disappeared. Very gentle citrus notes, vanilla, green apples, ripe pears and subtle hints of orange crystallize with plenty of effort gradually out. In the background, a musty cellar note is at work. A touch of oak and nuts can not save the one-dimensional, very flavourful nose (in terms of complexity & intensity) and slightly boring nose.
    • Taste
The feeble onset is hardly able to transport the mild aromas. The sweet, bright fruits are tasteless almost imperceptible. Nuts, malt and spicy oak notes dominate with a pronounced bitterness. Sweet is the Macallan, but nothing more.
    • Finish
Short, mild and powerless. The bright fruits flash in the short term with a subtle residual sweetness, before the oak and subtle spices with plenty of bitterness to pick up speed.

[June, 2015]  I donated this bottle to a party.  I bought it for 60 Euro in March, 2015.In my old rating system (ten scales that translate into WB points: 50 - 66 - 75 - 80 - 82,5 - 85 - 87,5 - 90 - 92,5 - 95) I scored this 80.  My notes state an immature, unbalanced and slightly bitter (tannins) profile that has absolutely nothing in common with the old Macallan style we all adore.  Since Macallan pushes for maximum production output the quality of this whisky went down south at a frightening speed.  But obviously they manage to attract more newbies to their brand as they loose old customers...This definitely is the last bottle of modern Macallan I bought!

[April, 2016]  I had this dram during a FoSM club tasting. In my old rating system (ten scales that translate into WB points: 50
    - 66 - 75 - 80 - 82,5 - 85 - 87,5 - 90 - 92,5 - 95) I scored it 75.  I
took no detailed notes as this whisky did not interest me at all.  This is not "The Macallan" anymore, this is just another boring mass product...

  5. rottendon scored this whisky 78 points Connoisseur

Bad he is not, is delicious, but the price is not. For the same price or less, there is much better. As with all branded items, you get something quite solid, but you pay just a surcharge for the name.
    • Nose
Very light, you have to keep the trunk pretty deep in the glass. Lime, granary and a few raisins. Alcohol, quite clear, but thanks to the 40% not uncomfortable.
    • Taste
Honey, malt, strong alcohol. There is not much to involve him. The flavors are too soft for that.
    • Finish
A little honey and chocolate raisins, and then he's already gone.

On the nose, it is very fruity, spicy, taste "sweet" with cinnamon!
On the palate, vanilla, sweet spices, not peppery, feeling of old wood, nice!
In the final, it collapses with little return!
It started well, but a final that makes his accounts..whisky very, too young!
    • Nose
sweet spices, malt, fruit on poached peaches, a nice vanilla back and some glue and wood a little soggy.
      creamy sweetness back and dust.

    Well, not fish, not meat.
    A Macallan? For sure.
A successor to the 12 SO? Certainly not.
A pleasant aperitif and quite tasty, but respect; the name is included in the price.
    • Nose
Preserved strawberries, sherry sweets and Christmas cookies. Vanilla in the background. Associations of citrus fruit.
    • Taste
Brown sugar, some ginger and lemon, subtle apples and cut grass.
    • Finish

Amber, even a dark amber color. The whisky is clearly oily in the glass.
    • Nose
      85 85
Pleasant, "warm", "soft" and fruity nose. First, fresh fruit from the orchard. Later on feel the greater influence of Sherry Oloroso. Milk chocolate, sweet soluble cocoa without bitterness. Red fruit. Sherry dryness. A pinch of spices. Cinnamon. Cherries. Milk chocolate with cherries. Traces of caramel in the background.
    • Taste
      82 82
A pinch of spices. Cinnamon. Dębina - a bit of bitterness. Cocoa. Dark chocolate. There is a certain spiciness. Some fresh fruit over time. Citrus. A pinch of ginger. Milk chocolate.
    • Finish
      83 83
A pinch of spices. Ginger. Traces of cinnamon. Dark chocolate. Cocoa. Oak barrels, but not in an extremely bitter version. Traces of red fruit. Chocolate with cherries. Medium-long finish, and maybe even long in gusts.

    - a decent, pleasant single malt with a
    nice sherry taste
    - despite NAS better than some single malts with 12 or
15 years, BUT for a Macallan AND the price
but very one-dimensional, too little depth and
    way too expensive
    - Too expensive even for originally around 50 €, current one
Collector prices over 100 € are all moon prices
    • Nose
clear citrus fruits, sherry, vanilla, oak
    • Taste
mild, pleasant start, looks round and balanced, light sherry (rather dry), fruity (orange), mild
    • Finish
      medium-long, fruity finish
      medium-long sherry aftertaste

For me its too alccoholic, at least at start. The only way to enjoy it is to add some water (not much) and be patient. After several minutes it can reveal a bit more. But still, its Macallan. It should be much better.
    • Nose
      66 66
Fresh Wood, ethanol, maybe a bit leather and orange zest. Ethanol kills a lot in it. Overall one dimensional and simple.
    • Taste
      55 55
Ok, so the only way to drink it without Coke, is to add some water or a lot of ice. Taste like moonshine with added sugar.
Actually good moonshine is better than this. Maybe a bit oaky, and... thats all.
    • Finish
      55 55
Very short and unsurprising. Ethanol with dark chocolate. Ok it stays a bit longer. But all that i can taste is the added E150

    • Nose
      85 85
light and pleasant, with delicate fruit notes (citrus fruits), raisins, a little sherry, complemented by fine oak notes, hints of baking spices, hint of honey.
    • Taste
      85 85
pleasant, fine-spicy, delicately sweetish, a little dried fruit aromas, trace nutty (hazelnuts), also here some sherry, wood / oak, a hint of tart, trace of chocolate. Quite tasty, not bad.
    • Finish
      84 84
pleasant with fine oak, a little sherry, a trace of honey, delicately sweet. Here, too, a touch of nutty, a bit of chocolate, ending with a little malty finish.

First Macallan I have tasted. A kind of dissapointment. On the nose it makes artifical and simple impression, taste is more like harsh and woody. Overall felt like young and immature.
    • Nose
      Caramel and artifical-like sweetness.
    • Taste
Harsh, unballanced, there is some crude woodiness. Somewhere in the back there is a bit of sherry note. Below average imo
    • Finish
      Woody

He disappoints me a lot. That should be a Macallan? Flat and one-dimensional, much too young for my taste and unfortunately completely superfluous. There is much better for significantly less money. But you can drink that away easily - a quality feature is something but unfortunately not.
    • Nose
      65 65
Something alcoholic. Very mild - so mild that hardly any aromas can be smelled. If it smells long enough, maybe some lemon and orange. But otherwise? Rather disappointing.
    • Taste
      70 70
Young and alcoholic, late some yellow fruit and goodwill with some cinnamon. Then something woody. Another orange. There is not much, I am quite disappointed.

No comparison to the Macallans with age. In the end, a very delicious and good to drink malt, if you do not want the total sherry bomb now.
    • Nose
Fresh and properly dessert-sweet. Citrus notes, probably a not so green apple. A hint of alcoholic touch.
    • Taste
The sweetness stays, the citrus note is not that strong anymore. Very warm and a lot of volume.
    • Finish
Again very warm and full, the oak occupies the mouth. Drying towards the end, comparatively long finish, which in the end gets a little bit bitter and gets a light tobacco taste.

For 40% surprisingly strong and spicy in the nose. Cinnamon. Oak. The dark-sweet sherry notes are initially in the background. For fresh citrus and a little vanilla. After the first sip, the impression in the nose is much sweeter and milder.
    • Taste
Also in the mouth surprisingly strong and spicy on the go. Tasty but mild and sweet. Get dry quickly. A touch of ginger. Something is occupying the tongue. Oak on the palate.
    • Finish
      Rather short and mild. Karamelltoffee.

In the nose bit citrus, hay, fruity. Body hints of toffee and amaretto. Rather short finish. As i understand, Macallan has it's price. Probably there are quite some other whiskies as good as the Amber for 10€ less (Aberlour Double caslk 12y i like a lot).

Fresh and floral for hay, clear apples and citrus zests. Then it gets heavier and develops a doughy malty, ground nuts, porridge and some cocoa. Later also fried banana, dried apricot and sweet sherry tones.
    • Taste
Heavy, malty nutty onion, roasted nuts, sweet sherry notes, soaked spoonful, orange cream and spicy reflext.
    • Finish
Medium. Nutty sherry and chocolate chip cookies.

Overall, one-dimensional, and the youth is subtly noticeable in the background, a little clearer finish, where it is quite burning again. Not unpleasant, but you know from other whiskys that you do not feel anything at best. In the taste he still scores with intense, bright sherry flavors. 83/100
    • Nose
Vanilla, honey, dried apricots and other dried fruits, cinnamon, caramel. Sweet, fruity, medium sherry on the bright side. A dry herbal note comes along.
    • Taste
Raisins, fresh apricots, sweet, fruity, spicy. Quite voluminous in its spicy sweetness, strong, feels like 43%, somewhat alcoholic in the background. Caramel, liquorice. Barrel makes itself noticeable in the background.
    • Finish
Raisins, dried apricots, and sherry tart.

Aged around 11yo says our tour guide Graham, who asked the master distiller out of his own personal interest. So this is whisky made from casks not quite making the 12yo grade for whatever reason. Could it be that this Amber is made from casks that were ‘ready’ already? Given the amount of first fill use, most definitely.

N: Similar profile to the Select Oak, though slightly thicker, sweeter and more refined.
T: Some mouthfeel chew with a light citrus and spice bite.
F: Bitter-sweet toffee bourbon, a little fresh spice, molasses and then vanilla ice cream at the end.
C: A bit rough n ready but again, identifiably modern Macallan. Certainly mark or two higher than the Select Oak.Scores a C[-]

Drinking is definitely good, but surely you can find better sherry matters, plus the price is classically overcrowded, as with Macallan is the latest custom
    • Nose
Sherry, combined with dried dark fruit, nuts, citrus and vanilla - does not scare it badly

Barely a step up from the Gold. A little more flavour but largely wood tannins and acetone. 77
    • Nose
Not a lot of aroma. Light oak and wood varnish. Hint of sulphite. Dust. White fleshy fruit like nearly ripe pears. Plasticine.
    • Taste
Fruity and spicy (White pepper mainly with some cinnamon). Some drying wood. Acetone.
    • Finish
Short to medium finish, white pepper and tannins making it extremely drying on the palate.

    • Nose
Intensively fruity, matured berries. A touch of nuts and lemon. Oranges, apples and vanilla, sweet and malty.
    • Taste
Not as sweet as the nose indicates, dark fruits, orange and sherry. In combination with oak including vanilla a well balanced taste.

    • Nose

    • Taste
Raisins, nuts and fruit cocktail, dark chocolate, soft and aromatic. Easy to drink, not very complex.

Cozy, easygoing beginner, plays in a class with the Balvenie Double Wood - unfortunately only without age and too expensive.
    • Nose
mild-sweet-fruity, citrus somewhere between orange / tangerine / lemon, some honey and toffee ... maybe an idea hazelnut ... or almond? ... but everything is very "cozy", nothing stands out, nothing stands out
    • Taste
Fruit is not much (maybe a bit citrus bitterness, immature apple), malt, nut ... even some walnut (so you can already see the oak)

Not my taste, too oaky, but still I am pretty sure that it is no bad quality. Just a matter of preferences !
    • Nose
Woody and spicy, definitely sherry influences. Oak dominates the whole. A bit agressive, maybe a little young. Black grape notes in the end.
    • Taste
Nervous and spicy, now the oak definitely takes power. Sherry influence is still there, with these winny and fruity notes in the background. Not bad, but to agressive, oaky and spicy for my taste.
    • Finish
Medium long and spicy, on cinamon.

This is only my second Macallan ever, the first one was a 12yo Sherry
Oak a couple of years ago. I didn't like it, but it was also one of my
first whiskies ever and I lacked experience.
    So I decided to give
Macallan another chance since this Amber is the whisky.de whisky club
    bottle at the moment.
I have to report though that this malt is far from being a pleasant dram for me. The only thing they have got right is the color...
    • Nose
It has got a rubbery and chemical nose which only very rarely tips over into some sherry fruityness.
    • Taste
Tastewise there is not much going on apart from some oak bitterness. It is really bland at best. And in the worst case when these chemical notes take over it becomes completely inacceptable.
    • Finish
What finish? It disappears almost immediately.

Baked apples, very gentle citrus. Some vanilla, raisins, sultanas, and some cinnamon. Quite a nice nose. And some almond past/marzipan.
    • Taste
Sweet, very gentle with some apples and walnuts.
    • Finish
Short/medium, fresh, youthful but not “too young”. Apples again with some citrus.

    Aroma: herbs, sherry, sweet, oak;

    Taste: strong, sweet, sherry, malt, oak, caramel, some gum, nutty, some marzipan, dark fruits, bittersweet;

Finish: quite long with spiciness and sweetness, perfume note; Conclusion: WhiskyBase says about 80 points, which is actually very little. I ordered it as Club Bottle 2014 at TWS. The PLV is really bad. It tastes stronger than it smells, is in the aroma rather a bit restrained I think, but in the taste nice strong and spicy. He makes an "artificial" impression on me over time, somehow beautified, angular? He is still OK on the first tasters, but is always square. Difficult to describe.

Fantastic on the nose, disappointing on the palate. The finish was OK but Macallan could do so much better. It seems like the color was the most important thing with this whisky beside the beautiful nose.

    (Rating intervall 76-81)
    • Nose
Fantastic nose, fresh herbs and spices, thyme, peach melba, butterscotch, some laundry softener, acetone and cocoa.
    • Taste
Very light bodied, wet paper, burned oak, earthy, bright, again butterscotch. Very flat and insipid. Where did all the sweet spices and herbs from the nose go?
    • Finish

Only my second Macallan. After that freakshow of the "1990-Whiskybroker Macallan" tasking, i was hoping this one was better... and it was. Much better actually.

Nice all around, not great, not bad, very drinkable.

Would I buy a bottle? Probably not. At this price I can get the Glendronach 15 Revival - a better choice.

    • Nose
Mild and fruity with citrus notes. After a long smell, some sherry and oak aroma comes through. Behind it a touch of vanilla and ginger. The described raisins I can not find the best will.
