    SMWS Tasting Notes

    Colour: Grade 1 maple syrup

A fascinating nose – we imagined homely American kitchens – honey-glazed ham and pumpkin pie, fresh from the oven – a housewife doing her nails – ice cream, toffee apples and Daim bars lined up for dessert. The taste evoked Thanksgiving – pumpkin pie (with Demerara and cinnamon), vanilla, toffee, corn candies, sweet potato and marshmallows. The reduced nose became more integrated – chocolate chip cookie and cinnamon spice bound together by light glue, inhabiting a haze of happiness. The palate was flavoursome and bourbon-like; oaky spice, Dentyne and root beer – was it filled into a cask or a pumpkin? Pernod Ricard’s grain distillery is in Glasgow.

Drinking tip: At Thanksgiving of course

  3. Tom na Gruagaich scored this whisky 80 points Connoisseur

Nose: vanilla & coconut. I think all Grain from the Bourbon barrel have these notes in the nose. Very fresh, slightly mineral and of course very sweet.
Mouth: Strong, if almost 60%. And now it gets interesting. The barrel has been quite harsh. Distinct bitterness, bitter oak
Finish: very dry, astringent. Clear oak, a little sweetness still sneaks through the mouth, but the dry finish predominates.

Conclusion: in the nose typical sweet Grain then takes over the barrel, in my opinion, a little too strong. That's what makes the Single Grain a character, but it's no palate flatterer like most of the others.
