[December, 2018] Just a short review of a sample (I would never buy a full bottle of such modern NAS stuff without trying it before)...

...and it was a good decision, again! This is a boring and unimpressive modern malt that lacks almost everything a Scotch single malt release should offer. Not worth any money (go for blends instead, they offer more value for the buck). Such releases are the undertaker's of the current malt whisky boom...
    • Nose
      78 78
The colour is jonquiripe corn and the nose shows a modern "designed" whisky profile with mainly immature mashy aromas that are somewhat camouflaged by excessive wooden notes. Boring and unimpressive - why should I sniff at such stuff?
    • Taste
      79 79
The taste is sugary sweet (rather industrial sugar, not the fine barley sugars I adore) and ... of course, woody. Cheap stuff, distilled and matured in a hurry to maximise output (and profit to the owners, an investment group) and marketed for the quick buck. I guess, warrior Svein would not be amused to read his name on this release...
    • Finish
      75 75
The whisky arrives with almost no mouthfeel on the palate (neither warming nor coating) but with drying-astringent moments from heavy woods. The finish is short as a lightning and leaves no lasting impression beside the drying-astringent tannins again. Water just flattens the dram (further). To be honest, I flushed the rest of this sample down the drain...

A decent OB. I'm not a fan of newer HP OB's at all, but this is quite OK. Better than the new 18-yo IMHO and on-par with the 2001 1L Travel Retail, but less sulphury and with less smoky notes.
    • Nose
A mix of yellow and red fruit, ginger dipped in vanilla desert (Dutch vla), a sulphury oaky wood note, I'm missing the whim of smoke present in a lot of HP OB's
    • Taste
Weak at first, then honey sweetness, vanilla and caramel, some oak on the sides of the tongue, then some coffee and dark chocolate notes on the back of the tongue. Ginger notes everywhere.
    • Finish
Medium long/Short. Keeping the coffee and dark chocolate notes, a warm (alcohol) feeling flows through the mouth front to back. Nothing else really.

If we find in this Highland Park Svein the usual markers of Highland Park, they will let especially be detected by the regulars of the label, because they are present but quite light. I would say that in this collection, we must push a little (much) further to find happiness, for example with the Ragnvald ... but it is not far from 10 times more expensive ...
    • Nose
The notes of oranges and vanilla are first felt, followed by apricots, a hint of caramel and a very light smoke.
    • Taste
If we stay in citrus, in general, it is more about lemons. The whisky stings a little bit of tongue as well as laterally. We find vanilla and this very slight smoke. The nose was already not very rich but the mouth is even less.
    • Finish
Medium length, slightly winey in the long run, with a hint of vanilla.

Not bad at all. it's not as good as 12yo but is really tasty.
you can feel sherry on the nose and nice smoke in mouth.

I do not find harmony in this whisky, no particular pleasure to the tasting alone or a whisky "of thirst". Maybe to highlight with a whisky-dish association?
    • Nose
      60 60
Little marked, notes of fresh butter maybe ... I'm waiting for a greasy whisky, round in the mouth.
    • Taste
      73 73
On the palate perfumes arrive gradually, very slowly (flat at the very beginning). Whisky that appears fresh (I can not find the nose), green wood maybe, gray pepper - my lips a little anesthetized! - very light peaty notes.
    • Finish
      70 70
Do not bring me new flavors. Persistence of gray pepper.

Awful stuff, the worst Highland Park I have ever tasted.

What are they thinking of bottling something so bad?

I only buy more expensive stuff from a distillery if the core range is ok, luckily I know HP are capable of great whisky this must have been sanctioned late on a Friday afternoon when people just wanted to get off for the weekend? The nose I ok then it is downhill fast.
