    Puh, letztlich enttäuschend….

    • Taste

    • Finish
Holzige Tanine bleiben, auch Gewürze und etwas Rauch… länger als gedacht…

I immediately smell oranges. Shortly after sweet notes of crème brûlée and vanilla. At the end a wonderful combination of oak with a light tone of Orkney heather peat.
    • Taste
      82 82
As soon as the whisky touches my tongue, I immediately taste smoke. Vanilla and a pinch of white pepper. Here too at the end, after swallowing, hints of Orkney heather peat and oak.
    • Finish
      83 83
Medium-long and dry. Lots of oak tannins and vanilla cake.

Seriously, I rather despise this for being one of the endless HP nas bottles that for its actual taste which is alright. Rough around the edges, but the 40% abv. don't come across too watery, also no real off notes and some peaty-/earthiness, too. Nothing you'd need on a bar but wouldn't pass one if offered.

Nothing outstanding, rather wood dominant. Fine if you don't wish to think too hard about your dram. The nose is quite enjoyable.
    • Nose

Spice driven with cinnamon and ginger. Varnish, leather and chocolate dust. A hint of salt and some sherry influence?
    • Taste
      69 69
Malty, fruit appears with stewed apple, dried apricot and orange peel. Some salted caramel. Wood forward with oak, vanilla and pepper.
    • Finish
      64 64
Mellow yet rather tannic with the oak sticking around. More milk chocolate with anise, fennel and caraway poking through. Cherries with a metallic glint and a slither of smoke.

    Very simple sample.
Young and boring for single malt whisky.

  11. Alexandr_Zhurov scored this whisky 67 points Expert Junior

Fruit and sweetly woody, young whisky, excellent color and not dyed, aged in American barrels and sherry.
    • Nose
Light, fresh, sweet apple jam, apricots, berry, herbs such as mint, orange, peat, salt, a little pine needles, there are varnish and cognac aromas.
    • Taste
Oily, sweet, woody, coniferous, bitter herbs, orange peel.
    • Finish
      Simple, bitter, grassy.

    http://www.justanotherdram.com/notes/highland-park-svein.html
If we find in this Highland Park Svein the usual markers of Highland Park, they will let especially be detected by the regulars of the label, because they are present but quite light. I would say that in this collection, we must push a little (much) further to find happiness, for example with the Ragnvald ... but it is not far from 10 times more expensive ...
    • Nose
The notes of oranges and vanilla are first felt, followed by apricots, a hint of caramel and a very light smoke.
    • Taste
If we stay in citrus, in general, it is more about lemons. The whisky stings a little bit of tongue as well as laterally. We find vanilla and this very slight smoke. The nose was already not very rich but the mouth is even less.
    • Finish
Medium length, slightly winey in the long run, with a hint of vanilla.

[December, 2018] Just a short review of a sample (I would never buy a full bottle of such modern NAS stuff without trying it before)...

...and it was a good decision, again! This is a boring and unimpressive modern malt that lacks almost everything a Scotch single malt release should offer. Not worth any money (go for blends instead, they offer more value for the buck). Such releases are the undertaker's of the current malt whisky boom...
    • Nose
      78 78
The colour is jonquiripe corn and the nose shows a modern "designed" whisky profile with mainly immature mashy aromas that are somewhat camouflaged by excessive wooden notes. Boring and unimpressive - why should I sniff at such stuff?
    • Taste
      79 79
The taste is sugary sweet (rather industrial sugar, not the fine barley sugars I adore) and ... of course, woody. Cheap stuff, distilled and matured in a hurry to maximise output (and profit to the owners, an investment group) and marketed for the quick buck. I guess, warrior Svein would not be amused to read his name on this release...
    • Finish
      75 75
The whisky arrives with almost no mouthfeel on the palate (neither warming nor coating) but with drying-astringent moments from heavy woods. The finish is short as a lightning and leaves no lasting impression beside the drying-astringent tannins again. Water just flattens the dram (further). To be honest, I flushed the rest of this sample down the drain...

I do not find harmony in this whisky, no particular pleasure to the tasting alone or a whisky "of thirst". Maybe to highlight with a whisky-dish association?
    • Nose
      60 60
Little marked, notes of fresh butter maybe ... I'm waiting for a greasy whisky, round in the mouth.
    • Taste
      73 73
On the palate perfumes arrive gradually, very slowly (flat at the very beginning). Whisky that appears fresh (I can not find the nose), green wood maybe, gray pepper - my lips a little anesthetized! - very light peaty notes.
    • Finish
      70 70
Do not bring me new flavors. Persistence of gray pepper.

Awful stuff, the worst Highland Park I have ever tasted.

What are they thinking of bottling something so bad?

I only buy more expensive stuff from a distillery if the core range is ok, luckily I know HP are capable of great whisky this must have been sanctioned late on a Friday afternoon when people just wanted to get off for the weekend? The nose I ok then it is downhill fast.

A decent OB. I'm not a fan of newer HP OB's at all, but this is quite OK. Better than the new 18-yo IMHO and on-par with the 2001 1L Travel Retail, but less sulphury and with less smoky notes.
    • Nose
A mix of yellow and red fruit, ginger dipped in vanilla desert (Dutch vla), a sulphury oaky wood note, I'm missing the whim of smoke present in a lot of HP OB's
    • Taste
Weak at first, then honey sweetness, vanilla and caramel, some oak on the sides of the tongue, then some coffee and dark chocolate notes on the back of the tongue. Ginger notes everywhere.
    • Finish
Medium long/Short. Keeping the coffee and dark chocolate notes, a warm (alcohol) feeling flows through the mouth front to back. Nothing else really.

You can drink it, but you do not have to. No comparison to the 12er.
    • Nose
The aroma does not convince me. Something smells like something that does not fit. A mixture of sweet wood and cloves.
    • Taste
Tasty a little better. Oak, neither fruity nor spicy. Straight forward.
    • Finish
      Medium.

Nose is really interesting. Otherwise, the HP in the mouth does not have much to offer. Quite affordable for the price, but you do not need 1 liter of it.
    • Nose
Smoke is quite superficial without being strong, the musty smoke is complemented by the scent of a mushroom pan, hazelnut liqueur, only very restrained fruit flavors (soft pear) are noticeable, second nose reveals something in the direction of menthol.
    • Taste
Very light on the tongue, it takes quite a while until anything comes, then there is red apple and an earthy note there, the only 40% bother quite strong, just not enough power to transport flavors here.
    • Finish
Here comes then despite the 40% a little more, the oak shows off spicy with a reminder of cocoa powder (not sweetened).

  25. didi1893 scored this whisky 86 points Connoisseur

Great nose, good taste, a fine all-day dram! Fits ;-)
    • Nose
Spicy notes of wood pour out of the glass, fruity apples and pears are quickly noticeable. Sweet and subtle vanilla rise from the intense fruit, a subtle smoky note is above the sweet and spicy fruit. The alcohol is more intense, as is the apple note. Dusty spice rises, the nose becomes dry and the aromas are extinguished.
    • Taste
Spicy notes of wood dominate the first sip, briefly apple and pear flare up before the wood gets dimmer and wilder. Subtle sharpness is created and is slowly intensified, a pinch of colorful pepper spreads on the tongue. The second sip of dark caramel comes from the spicy wood tones, the peppery sharpness picks up speed again. Slight bizz and spicy woody notes, then again dark apple. Pleasant spice now dominates the taste.
    • Finish
Dull and tart wood elements dominate the finish. The wood becomes bitterer, caramel and fruit return shortly. The finish is medium-lasting and leaves tart wood notes on the tongue.

Whether Highland Park does a favor with bottlings of this type?
    • Nose
This is not a nose that wants to push itself. Traces of vanilla, apple, pear and lemon. The combination is not bad at all, but the nose would like to go a bit more forward.
    • Taste
On the tongue a similar picture as in the nose: apple notes, quite fresh, some menthol, vanilla, young leather. At the back comes caramel and milk chocolate. Even a slight smokiness, which was noticeable neither in the nose, nor in the approach, is coming up. Overall, looks very young.
    • Finish
Medium-long and dry, with caramel and chocolate.

A whisky from the "Warrior" series. Not really very special but fine as an aperitif.
    • Nose
Again that pleasant touch of smoke that is so characteristic of a Highland Park whisky! Also a bit buttery and honey.
    • Taste
Greasy (oil-like). Small bit of smoke and sweet of vanilla.

    It is not better than
the Einar. On the contrary. This is probably one of the least interesting
modern HPs I have tried so far. Thanks, Pat!
    • Nose
Errr… the nose is quite introvert. I get some sweet malt and acacia
honey, but little else at first. Maybe some pineapple? This needs some hand
warmth. Okay, some more aromas emerge now. Skins of apple, vanilla and some
woodsmoke. Loads of earthy notes. But the whole is pretty quiet.
    • Taste
      Ouch, the arrival is
very weak. Almost watery. Some Seville oranges, a bit zesty even, but then only
some ginger, malt and a hint of smoke. Pencil shavings? This is no warrior. A
bit of a letdown. Actually, not a bit, but a big letdown.
    • Finish
      The finish is short
      on smoke and some oak.

  40. Rom did not rate this whisky Expert Junior

Smoked nose, vanilla, pepper and green wood. Vanilla attack then a wave of pepper begins to unfold. The tannins are well integrated, without astringency or bitterness, we feel rather an earthy aroma. The medium-length finish sees the pepper explode on a mixture of smoke and vegetable.

  41. Lucas Falchero scored this whisky 83 points Member Senior

A great success and an excellent quality / price ratio.
    • Nose
An interesting nose, simple but clear. A little lemon, smoked. Vanilla. And a hint of iodine. Alcohol very well integrated.
    • Taste
In the mouth, it is very homogeneous. A bit old-school, but it works very well; we are on the smoke, the iodine. Very homogeneous.
    • Finish
Just long enough. Peppery and sensual.

A whisky that displays Highland Park at its most convivial, Svein has been created to mirror the hospitable and generous nature of many of the Viking leaders, including its namesake.

The whisky is lively and bright on the palate, with some bold smoky notes, alongside zesty citrus fruit and vanilla, all delivered from a high percentage of American oak casks, noted for their sweetness.

Svein can best be described as the ultimate Viking chieftain and his spirit lives on through this release. Possessing a steely and ruthless determination alongside a fiery temper, Svein’s exploits lie at the very heart of the Orkneyinga Saga, his appetite for adventure and merriment are legendary.

As well as being a hardened, battle-scarred warrior, Svein’s reputation for hospitality showed no bounds.

    Tasting Notes by Highland Park
    • Nose

    • Taste

I tasted this one head-to-head with the Einar. The Einar has a heavier / chewier character, but the Svein has a clearer Highland Park signature. I prefer both over the more expensive and rather disappointing Leif Eriksson.
    • Nose
Light and fruity. Wine gums, marshmallows, vanilla, citrus, pineapple, orange, apple compote, caramel, mint and a
      bit of ash.
    • Taste
In comparison to the fruity nose, the taste is smokier, saltier, spicier and crustier. Vanilla, caramel, shortbread, date, pear, tobacco and straw.
    • Finish
      Wine gums, shortbread and charcoal.
