Tasted side by side with 44.53, this one is a little less archetypal in their peculiar profile but the overall level is very similar. Read : excellent.
    • Nose
      90 90
Similar to 44.53 but toned down, much less Crayola crayons (still some of them, though), replaced by some white wine acidity. The soft waxiness is there as well, and the floral scent as well. Think an old grandma's wardrobe.
    • Taste
      91 91
Similar again but delivers more than on the nose. It's a bit more fruity, with carambola and some dry white wine again. Very paraffiny. Mineral, on pebbles. Some dried flowers as well.
    • Finish
      91 91
Slightly sweeter and "easier" than 44.53.

N: Lighter, more faded than the 44.53 but with dreamy melted ice-cream opulently topped with cream,… and, fish pie?
T: Oily chestnut, macadamias. Firmly hums,.... milky-creamy again.
F: Drying, straw-ish~heather-ish vanilla, pea pods,.. The finish goes on and on,... and with more fish - kipper! And to think, i've not eaten fish for a few months.
C: The slightly better whisky of the two but i’m certain a fair number of my Desert Island whiskies will have a similar arrival to 44.53 - that’s oily-jammy. What a fab pair.Scores a B[+]

    A nice dram overall.
    • Nose
Sweet and sour, just like the bottle says! Honey, red and green fruit, dry oak, sour bread, and citrus notes.
    • Taste
Very soft mouthfeel. Red fruit and honey, soft spice, mild oak, and a subdued and pleasant sour note.
    • Finish
Buttery soft, with lingering spice, bready notes, and fruit.

  4. KayMeertens scored this whisky 89 points Connoisseur

    • Nose
Honey, apricot, vanilla, tangerine, smoke, wood, lime, caramel, banana and a little beeswax. Water makes it more waxy.
    • Taste
Quite a lot of smoke, must have been a heavily charred bourbon barrel. Beeswax, vanilla, orange, apricot, caramel and pepper.
    • Finish
Beeswax, smoke, caramel, oak, lime, vanilla, orange and a little spice. The waxiness turns slightly towards frying oil at the end.

    SMWS Tasting Notes

    Colour: Atlantis treasure trove

    Flavour: Juicy, oak & vanilla
The nose had heaps of honey, mounds of marshmallows and vast vanilla it also evoked summer barbeques (charred ribs, salad, lemon, balsamic, wood-sap, lawns) and a bookbinders workshop (leather, paper, glue). The palate had sweet and sour creative tension – sweet vanilla, chocolate muffins, crème brûlée, dark toffee and fudge against stewed fruits, Haribo sours, orange and blueberry. We also found woody notes – oily pine and wood fire embers. The reduced nose offered millionaire’s shortbread, sweet pipe tobacco, shrubberies and a good blast of honeycomb; while balsa wood and clove joined the palate. This 1891 distillery was co-founded by ‘Restless Peter’.

Drinking Tip: A summer barbecue dram (or just with a good
    book)
