[November, 2018] I had this dram during a FoSM club tasting...

...and this is a benchmark Traditional Scotch of a long gone style (unfortunately) from a long gone distillery (sadly). Very recommended to all lovers of subtle, interesting-to-explore yet quaffable whiskies that can spare a little time for this fine dram. Not recommended to all who prefer quick and powerful thrills over delicateness and balance...

      91 91
The colour is pale straw and the nose is very closed due to the high abv (61.8%) but after some breathing it offers a delicate old Traditional Scotch profile with dozens of different floral and grassy notes surrounded by barley sugars, nuts, oils and shy but very delicious rum-alike aromas (high esthers). This truly is superb but certainly not suited for lovers of the modern "designed" whisky styles only (with their simple but powerful spikes). But whoever prefers subtle, balanced and interesting-to-explore noses will like this, for sure. By the way, some water is essential to unlock all aromas...

The taste is truly multi-layered on a delicate old style profile again with oils, liquorice and some (fine) bitter tobacco and tea flavours beside the sugars and autumn floral notes. Very complex and perfectly balanced - there is a great movie playing on my palate and it is a perfect dram to play a little bit with water at different levels...
    • Finish
      91 91
The initial mouthfeel is warming and instantly coats all of the mouth without distracting moments (despite 61.8% abv, wow!). The finish is long and gets more bitter-herbal and a little drying which is not distracting here. The sugars celebrate a big comeback towards the end which leaves the finish balanced, finally. Water releases more aromas and flavours both in the nose and on the palate and turns the dram (even) more quaffable. Actually, I like it both neat and reduced to several lower strengths like 55%, 48% and 43% too - another characteristic of great whiskies!

Water recommended, smoother, more fruity and better drinkable
Blind tasting first thought no clue - nothing I'm familiar with
    • Nose
      89 89
Intense, leafy, green fruits, carambole, vegetables, spices, peppery, whiffs of oak wood – very good
    • Taste
      90 90
Punchy, but very oily, creamy, sirupy, good sweetness, fruity, pineapples, peaches, bananas, more spices, more pepper, zesty
    • Finish
      88 88
Long, burning, zesty, more punchy, teaish notes

With a stronger aftertaste would have been very close to perfection. But it is not far anyway!
    • Nose
Yellow tropical fruits. Palm tree and mimosa
    • Taste
      Mango. Light, sweet and tropical
    • Finish
Nice and intense but not too long

A very nice, but difficult dram. It's incredibly strong after 25 years in the cask (61.8% ABV) which makes it a bit shy on the nose and hot on the palate. Water improves the nose, but makes it a bit too bitter for my taste. If you like this bitterness, adding water is certainly a good choice.

    • Nose
Fruity (peach, apricot and candied strawberry), vanilla, a bit of coconut, honey, herbal (sugared barley, fresh coriander, which makes it a bit soapy). Wit water: earthier (tobacco leaves, earth) and mineral (lime stone).
    • Taste
With water: hot (no surprise with this ABV), sweet in the attack and becoming a drying towards the finish. Fruity, with orange and apricot. Again, water releases an earthy side of licorice and tobacco. Towards the finish, ginger and pepper enter the palate.
    • Finish
Long and lingering, but in a delicate way. It's just a bit too bitter to my taste after adding water. There is licorice, bitter lemon skin, ginger, and hay.

    • Nose
Apricot and orange. Cigars in their box. Caramel, vanilla and citrus. The latter two become stronger when adding water, and then also some grass and smoke come up.
    • Taste
More spice and more tobacco, but also a very sweet kind of apricot jam. Some peat ash, caramel and vanilla. Slightly soapy. Water simply increases the volume, it hardly changes its profile or compensates its intensity. Well perhaps it adds a little cinnamon.
    • Finish
Apricot, apple, cinnamon, cigar, gentle spice and a whiff of smoke.

Nose: cigarette smoke, malt, some spice, wax, fruity sweetness

Taste:nutty, subtle, fruity. With water sweeter

    Finish:long, some tannins
