[April, 2014]  I had this dram during a FoSM club tasting.

In my old rating system (ten scales that translate into WB points: 50 - 66 - 75 - 80 - 82,5 - 85 - 87,5 - 90 - 92,5 - 95) I scored it 85.  My notes state "nice Talisker, but I had better ones..."

There is no accounting for taste...

Premier nez qui évoque un boisé de bourbon (!) et la fumée vient progressivement s'intégrer, révélant son identité. Voilà du jambon grillé en bouche. Finale très musclée pour du 45,8° !

Enthousiasme 4/5

Whiskyfun: Talisker 12 yo (45.8%, OB for Friends of Classic Malts, European Oak, 21500 bottles, 2007) Two stars and a halfWe could have tried a recent batch of our beloved 10 but this older 12 was waiting in my sample library… It was issued to celebrate the 10 years of the Friends. Colour: full gold. Nose: not an easy one to pin down, it keeps changing, going from a briny peatiness to red berries and other slightly winey aromas (peonies). There’s also something slightly soapy and violety, but it keeps improving after a few seconds (right, minutes), becoming more and more coastal (campfire on the beach). The spirit finally defeats the sherry, which makes me more than happy in this context. Anyway, I’m not too fond of this nose… Mouth: it’s very good but the violety touches are back, which gives the whole a whacky kind of profile, somewhat ala Bowmore 1985. Nothing excessive though, the rest is quite beautiful, rightly briny and smoky. Smoked and salted grenadine. Finish: medium long, more on seawater and blackcurrants. Comments: again, I’m not too much into this kind of ‘balance’ but that’s very personal. Other MMs liked this baby a lot, I’ve seen scores ranging from 85 to 88. SGP:545 - 78 points.

Finish

good, middle long. But I mis something.

Talisker 12yo (45,8%, OB 2007, for Friends of Classic Malts, 21.500 btl.)

Nose: unmistakably Talisker. Grilled notes, freshly baked bread. Some peat. Hints of sherry, a wee bit of sulphur maybe. Some spices, mostly pepper and chilli. Slightly maritime (sea-weed, oily fish). Mouth: in the same league as the standard Talisker 10yo, but sweeter at first. Honey. Spices and toasted notes. Sugar coated nuts. White pepper. Hints of mustard. Finish: getting more salty. Slightly peaty and smokey. Some sweet oak influence.

Compared to the standard Talisker 10yo, this one is a little less spicy with a more generous dash of honey. Creamy but not really worth the extra cash.

Score: 82/100

Nose

Somewhat weird nose that goes up and down like a yoyo between the typical maritime elements on the one hand and all kinds of fruits that you would associate with a sherry cask on the other. It is searching, to no avail, for a balance between the peat and salt here and the mild raisins and double baked bread crust there. Something floral even. The maritime elements eventually win out.

Taste

Nicely oily, but immediately very floral. Damit, this is very close to soapy! Some roasted nuts emerge, sprinkled with honey, but Midpalate the peat and salt take the tastebuds hostage (words carefully chosen).

Finish

The medium long finish, still on the floral side, ends in a brackish note on black pepper.

Comments

The first Talisker that I really did not like very much, because of the soapy palate.
