Solid talisker. But is behind the 10 in all points. Take the few euros more and get the 10yo, the whisky will thank you.

    Good one

  3. DistiLesha scored this whisky 78 points Expert Senior

Quite light and bordering on the level of new-make. It feels a little more immature than Dark Storm, but in general they are very similar to each other.
Disappointed. I usually write much more about whisky, but there is nothing to write about here.

    • Nose
The first thing I heard was a cattle drive, then a pharmacy. Peaty, pear, sweetish.
Very weak and unsaturated. Almost identical to Dark Storm
    • Taste
Uncomplicated, sweet fruity, slightly smoky, citrus, salt, wood bitterness
    • Finish
Piercing with alcohols, slightly tannic, mash, bitterness of tannins

An easy to drink and very pleasing malt. The smoke is not dominant and blends great with the other flavors. However, it remains a bit pale in the overall picture and clearly shows that it still lacks some maturity compared to other Talisker malts.

    • Nose
A fresh feeling in the nose. The light Talisker smoke comes right after, but is subdued in a way that other flavors are immediately noticeable as well. These are mainly citrus fruits like oranges and tangerines. Behind it is a hint of sherry, which brings a light sweetness and also associations of ripe fruits. There are also caramel candies.
    • Taste
It spreads warmly and you can immediately feel the sharp tingling on the tip of your tongue that is typical of Talisker. Then you can find the aromas from the nose again directly. On the one hand the citrus fruits and on the other hand the sherry, whereby the sweetness stays in the background here. The smoke is not obtrusive and very well integrated into the overall impression.
    • Finish
The finish is medium-long at most and the fruit lasts to the end. A wooden influence of the barrel can only be guessed at.

Talisker Storm Unaged Whisky was first presented in early 2013. So that it brings the Talisker-typical spice, it matures in roasted American oak barrels. It combines complexity and smoky depth and is traded as the smokiest whisky on the Isle of Skye.

Talisker Storm. Consumed March 2019. Aroma is fumes, simple woodiness and burnt wood, fire embers but not in an appealing way. Taste is oily peat, building charcoal and salt, pretty bitter and a bit abrasive - gets jarring. Similar to the 10. Salty oily and astringent. Yes too bitter and it wore on me. A bee-sting to the mouth!

I reckon people who like the 10 might also like the Storm and Distillers Ed. The Dark Storm and Skye fall into a different flavour profile. Interesting how this distillery's output can vary. (2.95/71)

  17. Don Cassi scored this whisky 80 points Expert Senior

Very maritime to the nose, like a load of salty spray that hits you in the face. In addition, banana and some vanilla. A little more pleasing than the 10, but more boring than the DE.

In the mouth a slight alcohol sharpness on the tip of the tongue, a bit peppery and further maritime. Slightly watery and less full than expected despite the alcohol.

The finish is almost like Christmas with gingerbread spices, mainly nutmeg, dark chocolate and a good portion of wood. Behind it a slightly "fishy" association that I usually know from Caol Ila.
    Length: 5/10

Nice part but unfortunately not full enough and it still looks relatively young. In addition, I can't find the characteristic Chili Catch, which means that I wouldn't blindly identify it as a Talisker. PLV is correct and I like it a bit better than the 10er.

    Grade: 2+

The "stormy" character lies mostly in its strong alcohol approach, then it quickly looses depth and complexity. Its simple and flat taste is not bad for the price, but there's no match between this NAS and the outstanding 10 y.o.

A seriously good showing from Talisker.
    • Nose
Rather fresh and bright, with a subtle but certainly noticeable coastal influence and a few whiffs of peat. Pretty fruity (banana, mango, berries) and a fair hit of vanilla also. Finally a tinge of licorice and a slight minerality. Really good.
    • Taste
Salty, peppery, smoky. But in moderation. Some toasted oak, nori and olive brine as well. A tinge of burnt lemon peel too. Rather oily mouthfeel, by the way.
    • Finish
epper, vanilla and a tinge of iodine. Finally some chocolate. Long.

It's a touch drying and easy come easy go on the finish and body, but the beauty of this whisky is that it has more Talisker spirit and power than the 10 year old. I would choose this over the 10 year old because the standard 10 has been domesticated beyond all recognition as a Talisker, while this and the 18 year old are still firing on all peaty cylinders.

It is a Talisker very influenced by bourbon barrels, with sweet vanilla, sugar cane, icing sugar. We smell of iodine and heather, but it is set back, and very little peat. Then come red fruits, strawberries, prunes and raisins. A little earth and cherry, would there also be aging in sherry barrels? Everything is well balanced. An ounce of sea salt to structure it all. A few swirls of smoke.
In the mouth, it is sweeter and winey first of all, almost syrupy, hazelnuts, leather, caramel, apple, but the pepper rises very quickly. The finish is quite strong, but it passes. Relatively long, it leaves a charcoal, tar and humus taste.

Overall, solid, typical Talisker Malt. However, he could be a bit more complex, the youth is also very noticeable. For example, the Talisker 10J in the same price range is clearly ahead of it. For me no bottle you have to have.

    • Nose

Bright, straightforward NAS. Good, but somehow without enthusiasm.
    • Nose
Sea salt, fresh seaweed, smoked meat, smoked fish, honey, hot spices.
    • Taste
Salty smoked meat, citrus acidity, honey sweet, hot pepper.
    • Finish
It rolls a wave of salt, smoke, honey and bitterness barrels.

  45. EnjoyLife89 scored this whisky 82 points Expert Senior

    • Nose
The picture on the packaging describes the aroma optimally. Maritime (rough sea is really true), camp fire smoke, intense and strong, later comes through a sweetness and fruitiness. After a few sips (if you got used to the smoke) comes here a clearly ripe fruit (pear for me)
    • Taste
mouth-filling, instantly spreads a chili-sharpness in the mouth, the maritime impression is clearly confirmed here, it spreads dry smoke in the mouth (becoming dry) very spicy, after a long time in the mouth comes a sweetness and fruitiness (light ), oak and saltiness is there too. Fairly mild for 45.8% by volume
    • Finish
long and warm, dry smoke stays long (as well as the maritime note)

  46. Calmar scored this whisky 85 points Connoisseur

Powerful and dense on the one hand, simple and rectilinear on the other, on the whole, quite a pleasant hammer, without any special flaws, although immature notes begin to slip in the development.
    • Nose
Open, dry, boards, coated tablets, dry herbs, lemon peel, light sea shades.
    • Taste
Powerful, rich, oak, astringent bark, pepper wave, lemon peel, sweet syrup notes, lemonade, light creamy shades, peat and smoke manifest themselves in development.
    • Finish
Spicy, warming, oak, syrup sweet, pepper, ginger, a little cocoa and nuts, light notes of tropical fruits.

Is he the Talisker Sturm par excellence? ... certainly not.
Even with the first impression, it can't convince me. Life is too short for these drams.
    • Nose
I have my problem with boys. This is exactly what comes into play with this Talisker, OK, ... a grape note of the darker kind comes along. The announced smoke is less noticeable than expected. Vanilla and some furniture polish can actually hold their own.
    • Taste
The smoke covers the spiciness and makes it look pale with a tendency to weakness, although supposedly 45.8%.? No clear taste buds want to arise, a bit weak, (watery?) ... unfortunately can't convince me, sorry.
    • Finish
Short musty finish. Spicy, rather dry and
clearly for me a less good memory of a Talisker.

Somehow putrid (reminds me of Ardbeg), and then comes first little, then it is fresh and green, pepper, some vanilla is stronger
      then a little smoke later
    • Taste
light and silky on the palate
good malt is more, sweet, alcohol is good, slightly brown banana, sharpness, some smoke is stronger, oak comes at the end

I might mistake it for Bruichladdich easily on a blind tasting if only nosing it, it's so confusing.
    • Nose
Malty-sour smell. and yeasty sourness at the forefront, loamy (fat clay) nuance underneath, with iodine and sea salt that have been brought by coastal breeze behind it. There are some breakfast cereal notes, butter, cream, almost milky notes there, which aren't so regular in Talisker, along with salty ones. Now savoury, creamy peat is getting through, sardines, pickles?, faint vanilla, "oiled" American oak wood, camphor. It's nice enough, although not very complex, no it's not.
    • Taste
On the palate it appears to be softer than expected, being malty too, but now devoid of extra spiciness. Albeit decently spiced, it is not as peppery hot any more as it can be, usually. Well, maybe just a pinch of (ashy) pepper in the last phase, allspice?, and briny saltiness, lime juice. Before that: cream, soft creamy peat, building up slowly, with Sicilian oranges, ginger root and lemon, until all dissipate at long last. Quite sappy, it has that meaty texture in the mouth.
    • Finish
Duration is medium long. Crisp and warming just enough, backed up by nutmeg, coriander, thyme, some peat and zest. The balance is all right, no water's needed.

Very tasty, but here's the whistle missing. No nooks and crannies, so Storm is not a program here, but rather for cool days.
    • Nose
There is something tingling in the nose, caramel, toffee, some raisins, a light sweetness and something salty, like seawater
    • Taste
Caramel, raisins, some mint, dried fruit, slightly warming and black tea
    • Finish

    Serge from Whiskyfun says:

Talisker 'Storm' (45.8%, OB, 2013) From the distillers: ‘We wanted to focus on distillery character  (…) So we sought out some great mature Talisker, enriched and mellowed by time spent in carefully rejuvenated casks, and brought that together with some very fresh distillery character preserved by maturation in refill casks.’ Interesting… Price is just above the 10yo. Colour: gold. Nose: ah! This is obviously different. Different from the regular 10 and, should I add of course, very different from the old CAD. There’s a feeling of ‘creation’, in a way, it’s not a typical or traditional Taliskerian profile. It hasn’t got this feeling of sweetness either (what can be found in modern fresh-wood-driven young Islayers from the south shore), I’d even go as far as saying that it could be the mature output of a new, secret distillery, located right between Islay and Skye as far as styles are concerned (not Mull!) All that waffle to tell you that it’s rather peatier than Talisker, maybe more akin to Caol Ila, and very coastal, with some sea water and oysters plus, greatest of news, only a little vanilla. Also quite some dried kelp, then brine and even anchovies (do you know Provençal anchoïade?). Touches of ginger (from the rejuvenated casks?) Mouth: same feeling on the palate, although the fresh-oaky part is a tad louder than in the nose. That translates into rather more ginger and capsicum but not exactly more vanillin, sweet heavens! Touches of passion fruits, light brine, then more and more fresh spices, fresh walnuts, bitter almonds and these notes of capsicum again. A growing saltiness as well, beyond brine. Salty oysters. Finish: quite long with, quite bizarrely, more sweetness and even fruitiness while in my experience, finishes are usually drier. Peppery and salty aftertaste, very much Talisker. Comments: there’s some youth, roughness and Islayness that come through the (spicy) rejuvenated oak. I guess that was the whole point – or they’d have called it Scrabble rather than Storm. SGP:367 - 88 points.

As a huge Talisker Fan, I just found myself a favourite from these new core range bottligs. I find this Storm even better than the current 10 yo ! I really like the fact that this so clean and not sweet at all, probably thanks to those rejuvenated  and refill casks. No sign of over powering sweet vanilla from 1st fill bourbon casks. Instead spicy and very coastal and perhaps a tad peatier than the 10 yo. Very well made.

The team behind Diageo’s Talisker single malt has been notably busy in recent
months, releasing a travel retail-exclusive expression Port Ruighe, finished in
port casks following initial maturation in a mix of American and European oak
refill casks and heavily charred casks, along with Talisker Storm and Dark
Storm. The pick of the trio is Storm, in which the maritime notes of Talisker
are subtly enhanced. Refill and rejuvenated casks have both contributed to its
maturation. The nose offers brine, burning wood embers, vanilla, and honey. The
palate is sweet and spicy, with cranberries and blackcurrants, while peat-smoke
and black pepper are ever-present. The finish is spicy, with walnuts, and fruity
    peat.

    Nose: Soft
smoke. Some sweetness, fruits and spices in the background. An alcoholic note
is present. But it disappears when given some time in the glass.

    Initial
    taste: Smoky and spicy.

    Body:
Sweetness and fruits comes through. A kind of licorice note appears that goes
very well with the other flavors.  A bit
of roughness is there but it becomes much less with a little time in the glass.

    Finish: It
all fades away rather rapidly. Smoke and wood spices lingers a bit longer.
    Short to medium length.

    Water
brings more fruit in the nose. It removes some of the edges from the palate,
but it also makes it a bit dull. I would recommend none or very little water in
this one. Time in the glass improves it more than a dash of water.

    Overall it’s
a rather pleasant Talisker that I can enjoy at any time. But not sensational in

Given its name, this Storm is paradoxically more civilized, smoother than the 10yo. Notwithstanding the price difference, I prefer the ardor of the latter to this young man wearing Sunday. That said, it remains pleasant and well done.
    • Nose
Cooler than the 10yo. Always iodized, but where the 10yo eyeing directly on the plate of oysters, here we are in the wind, in the spray. Lemon is also present. It is also more peaty, even if the peat remains fine (it is far from the fat peat of young Islays Kildalton) and ends up turning on the burned wood. The touch of sherry has also disappeared in favor of vanilla and vegetal notes.
    • Taste
The mouth is more peaty than the 10yo, more lemony too. We find ginger, vanilla, salt, green apple and a relatively marked bitterness at the end of the mouth.
    • Finish
Like the 10yo, not very intense but long, salty. More bitter than that of 10yo.

In all honesty, I prefer the 10 Year Old more, but it
is close. This one is pretty complex, even. Surprising how it evolves from very
salty to very sweet. This is a good dram, which reminded me of Caol Ila on the
nose, but showed its true nature on the palate and in the finish.
    • Nose
It is immediately clear on the nose that this is a
completely different profile. Not at all sweet. Rather salty and mildly sour.
Loads of peat and white pepper. There is some sweet malt hidden in the
background, as well as some vanilla, but up front I get nothing but maritime
elements. Anchovies in the lead, followed by stockfish (you know, the dried
fish to chew on?) and oysters. Feels a little young, though. After a while, the
      vanilla gets louder.
    • Taste
Quite soft on the palate. Very smoky and suddently
becoming quite sweet. Peat and ginger. Walnuts! Once that fades the fruit kicks
in. Pears, apples and mango, but also hints of melon. Midpalate a big saltiness
      appears. Very nice balance.
    • Finish
It becomes fruitier and sweeter still on the lingering
finish, with a return of the typical pepper and brine on the death bed.

A storm in a glass of water is certainly not this Talisker. Even at the third impression, he can not convince me and reminds me even remotely to a Skye malt.
    • Nose
Slightly less earthy than usual from younger to middle-aged talismans, but with some grape notes of the darker kind. There is less to be felt of the announced smoke than expected. After a while light vanilla aromas and some furniture polish.
    • Taste
Here, wiser than in the nose. Although more peat smoke is heard here than in the nose, it is still far from a peatiness of a classic Islay painting. The 45.8% are a bit weak on the palate, a certain Waessrigkeit can not quite talk away.
    • Finish
Spicy, rather dry and slightly musty on the finish. At best, medium

A beautifully balanced, spicy new gem from
    Talisker!
    • Nose
Big, spiced aromas with hints of charred oak, hay and manuka honey. These
develop with notes of cranberries, hints of the coast and a touch of soft wood
      smoke. Clean and quite peppery.
    • Taste
Medium-bodied palate with notes of cinnamon and
allspice and a core of freshly cracked black pepper. There are notes of toasted
almond, creamy malt and a little smoke. Berry fruit appears late palate.
    • Finish
Good length with lingering oily spices. Quite
      peaty now.

    Producer`s Tasting Notes:
    Nose: At
first restrained yet spicy, with a hint of struck matches; fresh-clean
and growing in complexity like a gathering storm to reveal a honeyed
sweet maltiness with ripe red berry fruit. Eventually a little well
integrated mellow smoke drifts across the scene as a wild sea turns up
briny, fresh clean notes, and an oily explosion of pepper.

    Body: Medium.

    Palate:
At first sweetly mellow and rich in the mouth then quickly very spicy
and increasingly stormy as the Talisker heat comes through. It`s as if
the pure, tongue-coating sweetness joins hands with a deep nutty
smokiness to embrace those spicier notes. The flavour is elegantly drawn
out with a good balance between sweetness, smoke and salt, which is all
the more evident when a little water is added.

Finish: Clean and of medium length, warming, with a lasting, smooth aftertaste, in which late peaty burnt embers can be found.
