Whisky Reviews for Caperdonich 1998 Wx

[August, 2017]  Never ever I guessed this is a Caperdonich (I got this as a blind sample just stating the WB id).  And I did not know that they experimented with heavily peated malt at Caperdonich before its closure so this is a really nice surprise.

The colour is pale gold and the texture is fat and oily with late sticky tears and slow legs.  The nose is very peaty and a little Laphroaigish (I just served me a Laphroaig Cask Strength batch 009 and it compares nicely except that it has much more wooden aromas).   Some herbal and medical notes too.  After a while a typical Caperdonich rich toffee aroma pops up and stays.  All perfectly balanced, I like that!  The only hint for a peated mainland whisky is that the maritime notes are missing, obviously they used mainland peat (like Ardmore does).  It arrives warming and instantly mouth-coating on the palate with very little peppery moments.  The taste is bold and rich on peaty, vanilla-toffee, herbal and spicy wooden flavours that are again greatly balanced.  There is even a hint of salt.  The finish is long and sticky (like the texture promised) with no distracting bitter or drying feelings.  All just about as it should be...  Water is not needed as the dram is perfect as it is (and because water releases some unwanted bitter notes).

This was a big surprise both when the distillery was revealed and because of the high quality of the dram.  I really enjoyed this blind ride...
