Whisky Reviews for Linkwood 1989 AD

N: Alongside the strength theres a wonderful vibrant perfumed/floral note, clean honeyed grain and fresh oak alongside fig rolls and a mild/bitter liquorice. With water theres moist~dry grasses, ‘barnyard’ malt, a touch of sweet oyster sauce, crushed & pickled walnuts and clearly defined pickled artichokes. That ‘barnyard’ maltiness is the standout note, the cask possibly having spent some time in one of Linkwood’s few dunnage warehouses.
T: Straight away theres that bitter, oaky oiliness that ive come to associate with Linkwoods over the years. Water brings out the salty grain which when combined with the bitter wood oils creates an authentic liquorice. Its surprisingly sensitive to water, add too much and its very a simple grain-to-[fresh] aniseed, journey-to-finish.
F: Oaky, sour liquorice resonates. Water turns the liquorice to aniseed drops and its very bitter/fresh indeed.
C: I do love Linkwood’s but i didn’t quite ‘love’ any part of this. Its rather a classic, straight forward bourbon cask bottling, good but certainly two dimensional.

Solid to good Linkwood with a great development from the nose to the palate and thus almost two faces that are equally consistent.
    • Nose
Fresh mint leaves, After Eight chocolate. Overall quite dominant fresh and tend to bright fruit: lemon, pear and green apple. After a while, mild tobacco notes also penetrate.
    • Taste
Here significantly more tobacco leaves, plus a good portion of strong white wines. Good for less than 50 turns in volume and power. Although not as fresh-fruity as the nose, but on the palate with subtle a little darker tones, especially neat orange scrub.
    • Finish
Medium long with lots of light bitter orange.
