    Kavalan Podium 46%.

30ml sample at home Sep 2021, picked up 6 months ago.

    Dark golden orange.

Aroma is green and orange Starburst sweets, Chewits, orange wine gums. A touch spiky here and there if you sniff at it. On the whole it carries a subtle, kids’ sweets sort of aroma, one that intensifies as you get to the end of your dram.

Taste is tingly booze, bread notes moving to apple and something like celery, a little more spiky than the low-ish ABV would have you assume. Fairly lightweight body. Not a rich flavour - it’s quite spirit-led and salty. A little subtle bit of that wine gum flavour from the aroma comes through in the background. Cleansing and spiritous - maybe it’s lacking a bit of depth but it’s not lacking in flavour.

I like Kavalan and I like this although I have enjoyed their other stuff more. This one is quite 'up-front'. What you see is what you get and it doesn’t deliver much beyond the first impression. Still, it’s good, enjoyable clean stuff. 3.525/84

I am generally not a huge fan of Kavalan but this is one of my absolute favourite summer whiskies. Only things missing for a higher score is a bit more harmonious integration between the different flavours and increased viscosity.
    • Nose
      91 91
Complex nose. Exotic fruits such as mango, pineapple and coconut. In the background there are some classic bourbon barrel aroma such as vanilla and caramel.
    • Taste
      88 88
Sweet and mouth-watering. Sweet ripe and overripe mango, crispy green apple flesh, dried apricots and overripe kiwi. A bit of alcohol burn and unbalanced bitter oak in the background keeps the score from going into the 90s. At 46% it feels a bit thin. It would benefit from being more viscous.
    • Finish
      87 87
Medium long. A bit of oaky bitterness. Vanilla, green apple and coconut milk.

    • Nose
The first nose reminds me of a Paul John from an ex-bourbon barrel. The very warm climate has a very clear and special influence on how whisky develops in an ex-bourbon barrel. In my opinion, this is much more apparent with ex-bourbon barrels than with sherry or other wine barrels
A bit of glue, honey, vanilla, caramel, grain, hay, that definitely goes in the direction of bourbon, but then it's a little different, with a very slight fruity note behind it
    • Taste
Really intense Mango, a little lemon, apricot, caramel, honey,
That, in turn, is very far from a bourbon in terms of taste

    COLOR: gold, saffron [

    - the whisky is fine, but for one
    Anniversary edition clearly too weak
    - compared to the sherry bottlings from KAVALAN
    a real disappointment
    - in the best case 52 € definitely way too expensive
    • Nose
Sweet (honey / fudge), pear, especially ginger
    • Taste
Strong start, oak, ginger, light sweetness
    • Finish
      short finish;
Medium-long aftertaste with a distinct oak, bitter aftertaste

  7. Saftkenner scored this whisky 82 points Expert Senior

Quite strong and voluminous for his young age. Pretty unbalanced, however. A longer maturation might have softened the slight off-notes, but the bitterness might have become too intense.
I'm glad I only had one sample here.
    • Nose

Very cautious at first. Needs warmth and time. First there is only the alcohol, then vanilla, honey, banana, white oak seasoning, glue, honeydew melon, fresh cucumber and light acid.

Powerful start, full and oily body, tingling spiciness, medium bitterness, honey, orange.

For me, this malt is something completely different from Kavalan. This combination with the distillery character and the bourbon barrels is totally interesting. I think I can see the character of the distillery more clearly for the first time. The sherry soloist and the selection sherry are absolutely great, no question, but they are so loaded sherry grenades that the sherry actually outshines everything there. Here it is a bit more harmonious. So I think it's good to get to know the distillery better.
    • Nose
A clear vanilla note jumps out of the glass. Accompanied by a floral and herbal note, it remains absolutely sweet, almost viscous on the nose. Behind it I have an exotic note, which I would declare as light coconut and a slightly stronger lychee note.
Overall, it has something of marzipan and raw Christmas cookie dough
    • Taste
Sweet; here comes a clear oak, a really nice spice; still this exotic aroma, lychee, mango, fresh apple and somehow refreshing herbs. Very interesting; now there's a leathery note on the barrel, I really like it
    • Finish
Oak; getting slightly dry, still fruits and spices; the barrel hangs, briefly herbs again. Overall, a slightly bitter but pleasant note remains

    • Nose

Great easy to drink malt. Very tasty without too much to overwhelm.
    • Nose
      86 86
Subtle Sweet to Honey, Fruity to Banana Must Be a Light Mint,
Light wax notes with vanilla are added. The fruit is more dominant. Everything else gradually comes through timidly.
    • Taste
      86 86
Soft creamy onion, then directly peppery seasoning. Much sweeter than in the nose. The banana now has some green apple and a slightly exotic note of mango and grapefruit. Not too complex but it seems well balanced.
    • Finish
      84 84
Medium-length finish, the spicy sharpness returns quickly, it gets drier.
There is a slight bitterness after coffee

The classic sherry affair from Kavalan, which keeps a reasonable standard and a bit shuddering in the drying reverberation, where it tends to add to the bitter side of the Force. Unfortunately, the price is quite blown due to the result

[July, 2015]  Together with friends I emptied a bottle with bottling stamp 24.12.2012 that I bought for 70 Euro in June, 2015.

    In my old rating system (ten scales that translate into WB points: 50 - 66 - 75 - 80 - 82,5 - 85 - 87,5 - 90 - 92,5 - 95) I scored it 87,5.  My notes state a delicate and nicely balanced dram that is dangerously quaffable...

At first glance, it seems unfathomable that 3-4 yo Taiwanese whisky would gain ‘under the counter’ status at a whisky festival, hidden from the public gaze and undisclosed to a potentially wider customer base. Price wise however it makes sense given the Solist single cask bottlings are currently retailing for £335 [TWE Apr ’17]. On top of that, this young Taiwanese distillery is selling whisky from the Solist range faster than they can produce it. It’s quite a phenomena given you can acquire a 1967 48yo Tomintoul for the same money as an Asian 3yo. It’s crazy and exciting times.

Guided by his knowledge & expertise of sherry and whisky respectively, Nathan took Chris and I through the ‘under the counter’ Solist range Blog

N: Spongy and inevitably soft in comparison to the previous four cask strength ‘Solists’, but I was given this to try afterwards in order to appreciate the inherent distillery house style that's identifiable within the core range as well as the single casks. Hazy but good, sweet>vegetal funk.
T: Funky and yet focused, full yet soft.
    F: Raw, yet controlled.
C: A competent ‘budget’ Kavalan, though at £66 [TWE 2017] is hardly cheap.

I like it very much! Like sitting on a exotic island beach with a pina colada :)
    • Nose
Very sweet and fruity, exotic fruits such as mango, coconut, vanilla, sweet honey, light touch of citrus fruits, after some time darker fruits and some oak come to light. No alcohol in the nose noticeable. Great !

Stronger start than the soft nose suggests, creamy mouthfeel, again exotic fruits, green apple, cherries, honey, now comes also neat oak behind.
    • Finish

This is quite a powerful dram. It needs some time to open up. Be careful with the water as this seems to bring out quite a pungent peppery tone. The bourbon aromas with the fresh fruits are the main theme of this whisky. It has a nice depth of flavour.
All in all quite a quaffable whisky.
    • Nose
A fresh, fruity and sweet whisky with aromas of solvents (acetone and glue), fresh fruits (pineapple, green apple, lychee, green unripe mango, papaya, guava, peach), wet cardboard, hay, ginger, white pepper, floral tones, saw dust, boiled sweets, vanilla, hint of almond paste, acacia honey, cinnamon, slightly sour orange juice and creamy oak.
    • Taste
A powerful, fruity and rich whisky with aromas of cedarwood, solvents, tannins, ginger, white pepper, saw dust, apple, grape seeds, white wine, pear drops, herbal tea, caramel, macerated cherries, tangerine, acacia honey, vanilla, almond, lime, lychee, mango, green guava, a hint of new leather and spicy oak.
    • Finish

    Straight Forward
I tried this Kavalan Podium for the first time at a Kavalan tasting in Gent. This is the virgin oak expression for which Ian Chang – the Master Blender – brought together new American oak with refill bourbon and sherry casks. Otherwise the influence of the virgin oak would be to powerful (too spicy and too many tannins).
It is wonderfully fresh and summery with hints of yellow plums, strawberrie, peach, Granny Smith apples, coconut, banana and papaya. So, a fruity animal. It also has a floral touch that I find in almost all of the Kavalan. Wonderfully spicy with cinnamon and some cocoa.
It is mouth coating, spicy and sweet, but with a mildly drying effect. Honey, vanilla, peach and strawberries again. The coconut evolves towards almond milk. Some leather making it dry, I’ve said it.
The finish is quite long on the same spices as on the nose and loads of sweet fruity notes.
Fairly straight forward (meaning that nose, taste and finish are all-in the same league), but very aromatic and tasty. One of the better Kavalan (leaving the wonderful single cask Solist releases out of the equation).

  41. ScottFrench scored this whisky 86 points Expert Senior

This Kavalan Podium is a good whisky that offers us a beautiful palette of aromas although a little consensual. No surprise here, no complexity, but a good dram that goes to the basics. Available for about 70 €, a fairly consistent price.
    • Nose
very expressive and fragrant, greedy. Here we have a nice cake with pastry cream, sugar rapadura, vanilla, acacia honey, which gives it a fairly smooth texture. We add a few raisins, bananas, a touch of coconut, cinnamon, almonds and some hazelnuts and we have a nice treat. In the background are drawing mint scents very pleasant.
    • Taste
oily, powerful but much less round and spontaneous than one could have imagined ... The spices have the share and bring a small dry unexpected. With the opening, the dram is balanced and everything resumes its place. We always find cream, honey, brown sugar, vanilla, coconut, mint, a touch of grape and banana, but also frangipane and

Highly valued by the whisky pope (96.5 points). Now he is tasting. Fruity nose, neat sherry, sweetish, vanilla. It drives the saliva into my mouth, very voluminous, unique. He is getting a little softer, rounder now. Strongly smell vanilla, but do not taste it. If you like oak and a touch of sherry is very well served. Very long finish, great.
