Wow, a really good whisky. Already without water it is a force. With water especially the taste wins
    • Nose
Great first impression, dark fruits, raisins, almonds, nuts, oak, sweetness, orange, the alcohol does not stand out

      with water:
Immediately the malt opens, fruity, nut cake, orange
    • Taste
Now the alcohol is there, sweetness, sweet lemon, juice orange, nuts, oak

      with water:
strong, fruity, orange, oak, sweetness, chocolate, almonds

Braeval from 1989 usually is very good (I got a bottle form C&S from the same vintage). Tastes quite young for its actual age. Tnx for the sample Erik.
    • Nose
Very clean. The Bourbon cask influence is very clear: honey and vanilla at first. Also pineapple and lychees. Maple syrup sugar. Grassy notes.
    • Taste
Waxy and oily. Pineapple again. Peaches and oranges. Toasted oak. Spices of black pepper and cumin. Cinnamon.
    • Finish
The bourbon sweetness remains for a long time. Cinnamon. Liquorice. Not the most complex but very enjoyable.

    Blind tasting of a sample.
    • Nose
First vanilla, apple, candy cane, honey, peach and subtle spice. Eventually mocha, but that takes a while to come through.
    • Taste
Vanilla, nutmeg, apple, caramel, cream, honey, mocha and a little grass.
    • Finish
Caramel, milk chocolate, vanilla, apple and spice.

Lovely well-aged nose, with plenty of evidence of a good quality cask alongside some faint citrus fruits and the smell of an old hay barn (nicer than I can make it sound). Plenty of creamy toffee on the palate, with water releasing some additional citrus fruits. A touch unbalanced at the finish though, with salty and peppery aspects never quite blending as I hoped with the lingering fruits. Yet another great value bottling from Whiskybroker.
