A lovely old style whisky - highly recommended.
    • Nose
Wow!!! Smells like sitting in an orchard with all that fruity, flowery and herbal flavours surrounding me. Sweet, fresh, fruity and flowery at first nosing with lots of freshly thrashed sugarcane. Old bottle flavour, mossy with a whiff of peat. A perfect nose, impressive in its complexity.
    • Taste
Simply perfect, keeping what the nose has promised. Big, fat and oily. Spicy with a decent peatyness, a little bit of liquorice and notes of orange zest.
    • Finish
      Long and satisfying. Lovely.

[July, 2022] Last night we did another of these 3M-tastings (Mega-Monster-Marathon) in memoriam of good old Roland (R.I.P.) who introduced me into the wonderful world of single malt whisky: Six people, six hours and sixty drams (small measures only, because otherwise we would have ended up at the hospital).

In such a setting it is neither possible nor does it make any sense to write detailed notes hence take my scores with a grain of salt. This was the menu after a "warm-up" with four private cask samples (not rated):

No more drams this evening! And please remember: Whisky was rather made for drinking than for herding...

    Tasting note by Serge Valentin

Highland Park 1977/1988 (50%, Duthie for Samaroli, Fragments, 'Orkney', 648 bottles) A well-known bottling – it was about time I wrote a few notes about it! Colour: straw. Nose: this is ‘less big’ than the Cadenhead’s, and it’s not only for the lower ABV, but it’s also (even) more complex. More herbal (moss, fern and all that jazz) and waxy for a while, then fruitier. All kinds of crystallised citrus fruits, kumquats, tangerines, then orange peel, then paraffin and turpentine, linseed oil, fusel oil... It’s all quite soft and never aggressive. Perfect on the nose, let’s just hope that the palate will be a tad bigger (soft noses can be great, but translate not too well on the palate). Mouth: success! Much, much more in line with the Cadenhead, to the point where it’s almost the same whisky, just a tad softer. Maybe a tad more elegant as well. Finish: long, soothing, more civilised than the Cad and probably a little more citrusy. The more you wait for it, the more complex it gets, at that (various herbs spring to mind but a list would be, err, very boring.) Comments: quite amazing how this one gained power and richness from first sips to the afterglows of the finish. Now, I liked the Glen Garioch in the same series even better (94)! SGP:574 – 92 points.

[June, 2004]  Together with friends I emptied bottle no. 268 that I bought for 136 Euro in September, 2003.

    In my old rating system (ten scales that translate into WB points: 50 - 66 - 75 - 80 - 82,5 - 85 - 87,5 - 90 - 92,5 - 95) I scored it 92,5.  My notes state this is an undisclosed Highland Park.
