Oily, sooty and peaty notes. Old metals. With some time, you can tease out more of the sweets -- fruits, honey, maple syrup. Resembles those old Talisker GM's from the 1950's, strangely, probably from 1955 also.

Wave after wave of flavors. Great strength. Peat, leather, tobacco, old metals, roasted pecans, oils, bitters, licorice, all kinds of dried herbs, grapefruit pith, and sunflower liqueur. There are some subtle fruits and hints of honey. Not a total superstar, but a beautiful, educational dram that showcases the old, austere side of Orkney.
    • Finish
      92 92
Nothing in the finish to detract from the overall enjoyment of this dram. Love this.

Highland Park 1955, 52.8%, Gordon & MacPhail Cask, 75cl . Together with the official 21y 1959 dumpy and the 1968/1998 from Samaroli, this is undoubtedly the best Highland Park that I already drank. No idea when it was bottled and also Google does not make me much wiser. The nose first gives honey and all kinds of waxy states: wax, antique wax, old books, old leather, pollen ... some resin. Then fruit. But not just some fruit, no, it is the succulent tropical species. I have not written down the variations, you get the picture or not. Light peat too. That nose is really fantastic! But also on the taste this is absolute top. Powerful and full of aromas (lots of fruit, honey, heather, herbs, soft peat and so on), complex and perfectly balanced. Long, honey-sweet and honey-sweet aftertaste. Pure enjoyment! 94/100 http://onversneden.com/2010/12/22/de-hoogmis/
