With special thanks to Daan Tje for the given sample!
Once in a while you get to taste something special. This bottle from the old days is one of those examples. Where a modern day Oban can’t seem to convince me, I am very curious to this old Oban
Impressive nose! This is clearly a whole other quality then today’s 14yo. Despite of it’s low ABV, the nose definitely did not lose a thing in terms of full flavored, richness and complexity. Great stuff! Musty, dusty and dry cardboard. Way beyond it’s age. It would not surprise me if a big part of this 12yo is 20yo or up. There is herbal freshness and rich, sweet orchard fruits like red apple and tropical fruits like pineapple and kiwi. These are the types of noses I can completely loose myself for hours.
Balanced, friendly and oily. Full flavored and impressively well bodied. Sweet apples and some orange. Mild spices like nutmeg, clove and a very light whiff of mild pepper. It came down to me before quite often. Those older ‘basic’ whiskies have so much more to offer on the palate then all those everyone’s friends one can buy from these days. This one gives me the same experience.
A medium length finish that keeps developing. Golden berries, nutmeg, bourbon infused oak, a little dry at the very end but noting to be disturbed by. This is a highly palatable dram!
