    very enjoyable, time in the glass gave me more kola cubes (sweets) and 'spring' notes. Despite the time in a barrel the wood is not dominating at all.
    • Nose
      cola cordial, beeswax and honey. herbal. no trace of oak despite the age
    • Taste
      sweetness, citrus tang and more honey. not a whopping flavour burst but a long finish slightly drying. The grain comes through.
    • Finish
      slight dryness and more of the grain characteristics

    Praise the Lord!

    Look, the fact alone that this was distilled in 1970 is reason enough for me to give it a go. It is my year of birth after all. By now it has spent more than ten years in the bottle… which can be said of me as well (oh, Mark, please). Special about this Ben Nevis is that it’s composed with malt that was produced in pot stills as well as malt that was produced in a patent still. A single blend, if you will. Anyway, let’s get to it!

    OMFG! Excuse my French, but this is absolutely stunning! Brace yourself: cherries, eucalyptus, tiger balm, sandalwood, plum marmalade, pineapple cubes, candied orange peel, marzipan, shoe polish, mashed banana, sharpening stone, elderflowers and even a medicinal note that is hard to pinpoint. Praise the Lord!

    That medicinal note return immediately on the palate. How weird, but lovely. It gives this Ben Nevis real depth that you will not find in more recent (pot still?) releases. It is almost as if, next to the wonderful fruit, I also drank a drop of weapon oil. Boy, being transported back to my army days was not something I was looking forward to, but it’s easy to forgive this delicious whisky that fact. And no, it does not require a drop of water.

    Very long, spicy, warm and sweet finish that turns this into an experience that will be long remembered.

    Wonderful Ben Nevis that – in my opinion – is incomparable to anything else from the same house.

    Tasting Notes by Adelphi;

    1 of only 135 bottles from cask no. 4642

    A welcome return to our ‘single blend’ – that will confuse the legislators who are currently tinkering with Scotch whisky definitions! Joseph Hobbs, a colourful Scots Canadian who had bought Ben Nevis Distillery just before WWII, installed a patent still there beside the pot stills in 1955, making both grain and malt whisky – hence the possibility of a blended whisky from a single distillery. It is fabulous! Deep amber in colour, with a nose of macerated plums, cherries and soft fruits, and a curious medicinal note behind (Friar’s Balsam and eucalyptus), permeated by sandalwood. The flavour is sweet and medicinal at natural strength. Water makes it slightly ‘piggy’ for a moment, then it resumes its medicinal character (now joined by gun-stock oil), with boiled fruit sweets. The taste is sweet then dry with a long finish. Most unusual.
