Whisky Reviews for Glen Garioch 1965

6 users have left a review for this whisky and scored it an average of 92.03 points

  1. hs305 scored this whisky 92 points Connoisseur

[June, 2018]  I bought this sample at the Limburg Whisky Fair out of curiosity to check if this Glen Garioch is a heavily perfumed (soapy) one or not (after I had two very soapy mid-sixties Garioch).  I hope for the best given the high ratings here at WB.

The colour is tawny and the texture shows a fat sticky ring that builds fat sticky tears over time that very slowly moves downward.  The nose offers a beautiful old style sherry profile that is perfectly balanced and without any flaw.  All the aromas you wish to find in such a profile are there in abundance - this nose is both delicate and impressive.  The dram arrives warming and charming on the palate with a minor drying moment (old papers) but it nicely coats the mouth.  The taste is truly multi-layered on this adorable old style sherry profile again that is simply delicious and dangerously quaffable.  The finish is long, chewable and without any distracting moment, even the "old papers" are gone now.  Water releases more aromas in the nose and flavours on the palate but it flattens the dram too, unfortunately.  I like this whisky best when neat.

This is the old style Glen Garioch I fell in love with before I had these two unfortunate soapy ones - this dram is close to perfection.  Just the minor "old papers" mouthfeel reminds me a little of the disgusting taste of the soapy stuff (if you magnify this unwanted flavour tenfold or even more you understand what I mean).  This dram simply is "lecker" (delicious)…

This was a sample so I need to get some from a new bottle or buy one perhaps?

Never has a nose promised so much but the palate delivered so little, I am so disappointed because I love old Garioch.

Looking at everyone elses`s scores I thought the dark vatting would be better than the lighter one but that is far from the case, I found the light one much better palate wise.

I need to get some more to see if the nose is even better.

Take my score for what it is on the strength of a single sample, I am sure a full bottle would be better.

I think the bottle this came from had been open a long time possibly and some air has got to it?

    Shame.
    • Nose
Now that is a nose of distinction :) It is all on shoe leather, dark fruits, sweet candy tobacco, its actually called `Spanish Gold` and used to come in a packet in the 1970`s, awesome.

Fruit & nut chocolate bars, honeycomb, café latte, ginger, fudge.

Fantastic nose, if the palate lives up to this it will be something special?
    • Taste
What a great shame it does not live up to the great nose.

This one is thinner than the light vatting, on coffee, cocoa, light chocolate cake and something else like salted caramel but not as strong
    • Finish
      Fades too quickly.

  4. aphex scored this whisky 91 points Expert Senior

Nose : Refined sherry notes. Black raisins, plum, chocolate. And smoke. With aeration, almost floral. Afterwards orange and spices.

Mouth : Slightly peaty, mineral, floral, citrusy. Spices and caramel.

Finish : Dry, lingering citrus and smoke.

The nose is fantastic with its complexity and evolution during tasting. Higher ABV would have been welcome (maybe it lost a bit of strength) but the mouth is great too.

    An excellent old Glen Garioch.

  5. Dram Dracula scored this whisky 93 points Expert Senior

Tried this side by side with the 21yo "light vatting" which I scored a 92, this "dark vatting" is obviously sherried at first nosing, but after about 30 seconds, this softer, more subtle, and complex old sherry that I ABSOLUTELY ADORE appears, and on the palate, lots of wonderful dry leaves, old dusty books, and some expensive pu-er tea, along with the continuation of the wonderful soft, old subtle sherry from the nose. The peat here is very subtle, and definitely got a bit overshadowed by the sherry, as compared to the "light vatting". Again, low ABV prevents me from being totally awed, as the finish is never as great as it can be if the ABV is above 50%. Tasting blind, this could be a very, very good old Ledaig.

  6. barryfox915 scored this whisky 90 points Expert Senior

    Colour: Amber
Nose: Intense, peaty, on plums, sugar, orange and tangerine.
With time, it gains in complexity.
    Taste: Peaty, floral, slightly sugary,
quite thick, mineral, on citrus, orange, leather, toffee and smoke. The finish
is long, quite thick and dry, peaty, floral, and on orange.
    Impression: A
most pleasant Glen Garioch, with more complexity than the “light vatting”
    version
