Fresh pine, candle wax, a bit of honey dew. Quite typical of Clynelish. On second whiff, pineapples, some sour citrus,
    • Taste

Quite spirity initially... stings your nose upon first sip. Still fruity, but somewhat grassier now. Not more complex than a good Clynelish in their early 20's.
    • Finish
      88 88
Not much development over the palate. A bit more oak at the end. Not sure if this wouldn't have been better if taken out of the barrel earlier.

Nose: lemon with a lot of wax.

Taste: lemons and wax and warming sherry.

Finish: long lemony finish with spices from the wood making their presence felt.

Incredible quality for such an old whisky.

    SMWS Tasting Notes

    Colour: Comice Pear flesh

This sample, from the existing distillery in Brora, is like a landscape pastel painting out of the still house overlooking the Moray Firth. It starts off shy, lemon fragrant wax candles, pear in chocolate sauce and beeswax. Then you discover fresh oysters, rock pools, mixed apple slices and a garden in full bloom. The taste is a shellfish medley and a Dover sole with tagliatelli, slightly lemony, waxy and a hint of smoke - all in perfect balance. With water the nose has oysters with vinegar and tarragon dill, candid fennel, turning richer and more intense floral/perfumed like a soft rain shower opening the flowers in the garden. The taste like sweet incense, dark treacle toffee with a malty intensity of a Porter beer.
