Nose

Medium impact on the nose with some citrus (orange peel), roasted flavors (caramel) and a bit of spice (hints of vanilla).

Nose score = 20/25

Taste

Medium bodied, smooth sweet attack (dried fruits like raisins), roasted flavors (toffee/fudge, some nuts). Not overly complex but a bit more going on then the 12yo.

Taste score = 20/25

Finish

Medium long with some nice dynamics. Caramel, ending with some spice (pepper) and some wood (oak).

Taste score = 19/25

Comments

Consistency in nose and taste and some interesting dynamics going on. But complexity is still not that high but again it's only a 15 yo still. Sherry is there in the raisins.

Balance score = 23/25

Total score = 81 pts

Nose

Typical aberlour, lychee, passion fruits, coconut with behind it a hefty amount of vanilla. There's also a nice spicy woodyness to it. After letting it sit for a while (10-15 mins), the sherry steps up and you get more leather and a kind of nutiness, but the fruit remains the dominant smell. Very nice!

Taste

In contrary to the nose, the sherry notes dominate the flavour of this whisky. In the arrival the fruitness from the bourbon casks is there and a nice sourness, but in the development it gets overwhelmed by sweet nutty, wood and grape notes.

Finish

Medium to long dry finish with a pleasant bitterness to it.

Comments

My conclusion is that this whisky is an absolute bargain. I've paid about €30 for a 1L bottle and it's a much more complex malt then I had expected. Then again, I've never had a bad Aberlour.

The only downside to this bottle is that it's bottled at 40% if only we could have this stuff at 46%, it would've been heaven.
