This Ben Nevis has a very fine nose was, but in the palate the distillery’s character is drawn to the background. A shame really, because we know how good the Ben Nevis spirit is. Not the most recommendable bottling from 1996 in my opinion.

Fruity with grassy notes. Or the other way around. The trademark metallics, copper and iron, are there. The fruity side becomes more dominant with papaya, oranges, kiwi, and green apples, all not fully ripened. I do not detect a lot of sherry cask influence, although the nose has a spice edge to it. Hints of old wood, nutmeg, fresh leather, charcoal, charred wood. The wood starts to compete for centre stage with the fruits, probably a bit too much for me. But the fruits luckily fight back to keep a delicate balance. The apples come more to front with notes of dry white wine, apple compote, maybe faint notes of red fruits. Yeah, there are definitely some raspberries, and spicy honey-walnut cake with orange peel on top. Nice.

Spices and fruits. Quite hot. The wood is very active giving cardamon, nutmeg, cinnamon powder, and sawdust. There are also fruits like pineapple, oranges and tangerines, but they tend to loose the battle on the palate. Water slightly pushes to the fruity side, but also makes it flatter.

Finish with walnut cake, orange zest, charcoal and a few fruits.

N: Following on from the young 9yo WB, this is a mature sherry cask bottling thats far more inconspicuous compared to modern day bombs. I can still smell the distillate and the grain within but the sherry oak has covered it in a thick, sweet, pancake batter - yum. Theres a grey-clay maltiness which i’m not so sure about, yet - and a curdled cream note alongside. Later on its emitting a vanilla-emulsion-covered, soft-cream-cheese [Philadelphia] and a plump raisin-fig roll, creme-caramel vibe. Curious one but settling all the while. Theres something of an older single grain whisky about this. Those oak oils are lovely. After an hour its consolidated nicely but still some question marks, namely its a bit chalky still and a hint of lamb - but hey lets get on and taste it.
T: Strong but not offensive, even at 53.1%. Lovely, soft-yet-deep, sherry malt surges forth with the oaky, oily, vibrant barley spirit, driving this on.  A warm, fruity=creamy=malty mouthfeel and mouthful ensues, a little peppery but some lip-smacking equal to the odd 'dad noises’ and head nod.

F: The barley sings, the oak sings - we have a partnership. That vanilla emulsion is back on the finish - more mature single grain suggestions. Concludes with vanilla cream with a sprinkle of turmeric.
C: Really good age here, thumbs up for that. There are some strange beginnings and endings which make for an 'interesting' yet enjoyable ride. its a little puzzling yes, but theres a sweet spot in the middle which is a fine reward indeed.Scores a B- [85]

In the nose very nutty and rather dry. All kinds of nuts. Walnut, hazelnut, peanut and whatever else is on the nut counter. In addition, such a strange "dustiness", which one finds only with old sherry whiskys, which have spent an eternally long time in the barrel. But is also typical Ben Nevis. After a while in the glass fruity undertones come to light. Peach? The palate is dominated by the nut flavor. But he also has a sweet touch of sherry, and the peaches are also noticeable again. On the finish very well rounded and elegant. Despite the cask strength, it is very drinkable without adding water. 90 p
