Indeed a rather unusual Glenrothes from that time period, probably not my favorite from that time - personally I prefer much more the 30yo that was also distilled in 1974

    • Nose
Malty, barleyish, hints of honeydew and vanilla, green fruits, whiffs, of smoke - rather shy - probably needs more air
    • Taste
Fresh, fruity, mostly about citrus fruits, but also green fruits, hints of leather, little sweetness, hints of oak wood
    • Finish
Medium long, zesty and a tad bitter in the end

Jim Murray Whisky Bibel 2nd /3rd/4th /5th Edition

The Glenrothes 1974 bott 03 db (94) n24 old leather handbags, honeycomb, slight peat; t24 stupendous honey-malt arrival with burned fudge and then malted barley at its most pure; some liquorice and peat are also in there somewhere; f23 oak offers a vanilla reprise from the marauding honey, malt and soft peat; b23 I know people who are Glenrothes aficionados: their lives revolve around this distillery. Without this truly classic dram, those lives will be incompltete. 43%

    Malt Advocate

    88The Glenrothes 1974 Vintage (29 year old, 43%)
    Style: Speyside single malt scotch
    Color: Amber gold
Aroma: Full and creamy. Floral, honey, fruit gum drops.
Palate: Rich and mouth-coating. Clean. Nicely balanced. Notes
of vanilla, honey, and assorted fruits up front, followed by spicy oak notes, with a dried fruit finish.

General Comments: This doesn't taste 29 years oldhere no excessive woodiness, just a tad dry on the finish. This vintage is not as heavy or sherried as the previous 1979 release, exhibiting more finesse. Personally, I think a little more sherry would have enhanced the whisky flavors and helped to balance some of the dry notes. But still, it a fine effort just as it is.

Tasting Notes whisky info Smell: Smells very pleasant to early Taste: vanilla and lemons, a little honey, is super pleasant on the tongue. Has some dried hay and heather. Reminiscent of a Dalwhinnie only much better. Conclusion: Very tasty, a typical Glenrothes without an old sherry taste. Unfortunately in Germany very hard to get! ******** (9.2 out of 10)
