[October, 2019] A quick review of a sample...

...that is not impressive neither in its nose nor on the palate. I had much better St. Magdalene drams before and it seems this cask was bottled just because it came from a lost distillery. Collector's stuff...
    • Nose
      84 84
The colour is pale gold and the nose is very punchy due to the high abv. After some breathing a subtle grassy-floral profil develops with some shy fruity impressions which is not very impressive.
    • Taste
      85 85
The taste is barley sugary sweet with grassy and floral flavours in a spicy wooden framework. Quite simple and not impressive either, even after some chewing. A shy chocolate note pops up, that's it.
    • Finish
      83 83
The dram arrives hot and almost not coating on the palate, the mouthfeel is neither impressive, too. The finish is short and adds a lot of hot spicy flavours. Some water does not change a lot and a further reduction releases chalky-mineral aromas in the nose and turns the taste smoother but not more interesting. But it is easy quaffable now (if you do not think of the price tag of this bottle)...

aroma: suds, unripe peaches, vanilla cheesecake| taste: quite spicy, but at the same time vanilla, apples and pears also appear. Stays with a rating of 5

I tried this with a little water from the off.

The noes is all on lemon zest, white wine, cream and warm brioche.
FFS this is still hot, lacking any balance, it is spirity and tastes much younger than its stated 25 years.
There is an ever so slight metallic or plastic manufactured taste to this.
I can`t be bothered to describe it any further the finish is hot, uneven and lacking any finesse.
This was most definitely a tired cask and I am coming to the conclusion that Blackadder seem to get more than their fair share of dud casks, they must be at the back of the queue for cask selection, I have had some real duds from them recently

Wild and furious, sweet and spicy, Lolender small, very strange and eclectic, but deep and rich in flavor, sometimes reminiscent of the rum of a barrel fortress; dense and boiling with energy taste / finish - not so diverse, but interesting and attractive. Molt seems to be barely able to cope with its fortress, adding water, unfortunately, only worsens the situation - the aroma loses all its shades and becomes flat and dull, the taste also breaks down and loses appeal, the aftertaste suffers less, but does not acquire anything, alas.
    • Nose
Clear, sharp, the first nose - moonshine, apples, grass - fennel, dill, peat even; mineral notes, perfumes - cologne, soap; salted lard with garlic, rum, wood dust, carpentry workshop, thinner, turnip, lovage, marjoram.
    • Taste
A sharp, powerful, sweet, woody-herbal syrup with a powerful peppery wave, oily, fatty - again salted bacon.
    • Finish
Spicy, warming, mulled wine, cinnamon, orange and grapefruit crust, light oak bitterness, ginger, grassy bitterness.

Note by Serge Valentin from whiskyfun.com:St Magdalene 25 yo 1982/2008 (61.8%, Blackadder Raw Cask, cask #2180, 603 bottles)  Colour: straw. Nose: the same kind of ‘waxy citrus’ as in the BBR but also more orangey and coffee-ish, which really complements the whole here. Nice farminess as well (wet hay again) as well as quite some chocolate. With water: same, with more grass, flints, linseed oil, chalk and tobacco. Nice. Mouth (neat): powerful and completely different from the BBR. Much, much fruitier, mostly on pineapples and pears, but also very hot and peppery so let’s add water. With water: even fruitier, even kind of bubblegummy. Pomegranates, strawberries and white chocolate. Not for children, though… Finish: long and still as fruity, with just more white pepper and a little cinnamon. Comments: according to the cask numbers, this was probably distilled on the same day as it’s sibling and then filled… in a much better cask (and/or stored at a better place). SGP:551 - 83 points.

    Quite good like for lowlander!
    • Nose
hospital, fighting for supremacy salty and sweet accents, potato chips, sweet cider, heather, beeswax, fried eggs, sunflower, distinct but not intrusive smoke
    • Taste
Salt is still struggling with the sweetness of the primacy of precedence, white chocolate, beeswax, honey, pepper
    • Finish
      Dates, menthol, pepper,smoke

I really love this whisky, so many layers of flavors.
    • Nose
Neat: Very strong and spirity nose. It really feels that this whisky is over 60%. But I can feel som fruitiness in the background. With water: Now the sweet fruits is really showing it self..
    • Taste
Neat: Very oily mouth feeling. The taste is very deep, creamy and strong. With water: Now it's so sweet, fruity and spicy, great.
    • Finish
Neat: Very long and spicy. With water: Still long and spicy.
