Very powerful nose in prunes and sherry. Intense palate marked by a sweet sherry, but not too much. Finale supported by a beautiful chocolate note. Not many different flavors but all very intense! I did not even bother adding water so it was so satisfying. (And yet it should have)

    Enthusiasm 4/5

2 great whiskys at a fair price, as usual with a'bunadh, the 44 liked me personally a little better. (44 - remainder from about 1 year open bottle, 50 - fresh opened)
    • Nose
Direct Comparison Batch 44 vs: Batch 50:
both very strong (get some water), spicy, a lot of oak, earthy, 44 a little sharper, cinnamon, juicy red berries, 50 closed, then sweeter, more dried fruit, gingerbread ... after a long time both show light acidity
    • Taste
both strong and full-bodied, dark-sweet, molasses, sugar beet syrup, dark chocolate, 44 dark, bitter, but also tart, dark fruit notes (redcurrant, plum jam), tobacco, 50 appears creamier and milder overall (also nougat, toffee, Latte)
    • Finish
both long, bittersweet, cocoa, pepper, 44 a little spicier, 50 a bit creamier

    • Finish
      Long, sweet, warm, rich

It's not really my type of whisky, but I must admit that it is very well done (and not too expensive).
    • Nose
Strongly marked by sherry with a "dark" side: sweet exhalations of stone fruits (cherries, plums), citrus fruits (oranges and blood oranges), spices (sweet pepper, cinnamon) and sweeter fragrances ( vanilla, sweet almond paste).
    • Taste
The palate is creamy and quite sweet despite the degree of alcohol. The classic notes of a sherry cask are summoned here: candied oranges, jammy fruits, spices (cinnamon, nutmeg), caramelized dried fruits, roasted seeds (coffee, cocoa). More "crystalline" notes of acidulated herbal sweets (the unpronounceable name of the pub !!) are a happy and harmonious marriage.
    • Finish
Long, rich and hot on a kind of complex compote of spicy red fruits and caramelized.

    • Finish

    Another great batch!

    (Rating interval 86-89)
    • Nose
Molasses, almost rum like, sweet and sour syrup, sour plums, grapes, brown sugar, caramel, fermented apples, plenty with nougat and vanillin.
    • Taste
Very powerful, warm and full-bodied, strong mocha coffee, again nougat, artificial cola flavor and sour candy.
    • Finish
The finish is dry, long and lingering with caramel and red and black currants.

    My favorite Aberlour!
    • Nose
Spicy and pungent nose. Lots of sherry that is even dominant over the strong alcohol. Glazed oranges, plums, overripe berries. A hint of oak.
    • Taste
Creamy and sweet. Orange peel and honey. Some vanilla and caramel. Chocolate and raisins. Very complex.
    • Finish
Long and intense finish. Little dry in the end, but overall very sweet.

  22. KayMeertens scored this whisky 88 points Connoisseur

Compared to earlier batches (34, 35, 39), the dark notes become a bit less prominent, leaving room for some 'fresher' and sligtly bitter notes. It seems a little younger. Though I prefer the mentioned earlier batches, this is still a very good dram in its price class. 87/88.
    • Nose
Dark cherry, raisin, prune, orange, marshmallow, vanilla, pastry, apple and marzipan. With water more caramel.
    • Taste
Raisin, dark cherry, orange, marshmallow, raspberry and vanilla. With a drop of water, also some herbs like Ricola candy or Underberg liquor.
    • Finish
      Raisin, orange, marzipan and pepper.
