  1. Drochaid scored this whisky 93 points Connoisseur

A 40 year old whisky from Tomatin bottled back in October 2007. This was

distilled in 1967, the middle of Tomatin`s huge growth period when it

was one of the biggest distilleries in Scotland, and sat in a bourbon

cask until bottling. An elegant and distinguished dram.

Calm, seasoned, settled, matured for a long time, this whisky is full of nobility, shows self-confidence and regularity. The one who doesn't need to prove anything. A little digression: I was amazed when I read that these are seven Bourbon Hogsheads (and I try to never read a description of a whisky that I know nothing about, in order to make the tasting more authentic, closer to the laboratory experience and prefer to rely on my own feelings), because I was sure of its beginning, put in sherry casks, some kind of not the first filling. Without burning, protruding corners, he nevertheless led me by the nose for a long time with his "dark" tones of buckwheat honey, tea brewing, dried tea rose, old leather, such a room in which antique furniture is being repaired and restored, with hints of varnish, paint and dust, both ordinary and book dust, which you find in library vaults. This was complemented by tones of raisins, prunes and dried apricots, with subtle notes of citrus and bergamot. I must say that the excellent aromatic tones are retained further, but in a paler form, with a slightly delayed finish.

  4. Calmar scored this whisky 93 points Connoisseur

An excellent whisky, Tomatin acts as a standard of the Highland, and the whole scotch as a whole, if I was offered to give Tomatin 18 to a person who has never tried the whisky, the most typical, high-quality representative of Scotland, if I complicate the task and raise the age by 30, then I would recommend Tomatin, but already 40. Is he the best? - certainly not, it is the most characteristic, reflecting the essence of the product, a representative, of very, very good quality; major league must have.
    • Nose
Open, dry, treated valuable wood, old furniture, varnish, cigar box, pipe tobacco, cinnamon, lemon, dried fruits - dirty, dusty dried apricots, dried apples, pears; homemade fruit candy of sour apples, a bit of buckwheat honey, dry herbs, lemonade, fruit drops.
    • Taste
Calm, saturated, oak, oiliness, lemon peel, lemon pepper, creamy notes - condensed milk, butterscotch; butter cream, nuts, buckwheat honey.
    • Finish
The continuation of taste, calm, soft, creamy oak, light notes of citrus - lemon peel, orange; kvass mash, light bitterness of dark beer, candied ginger, burnt rye crackers.

The 40 Years Old expression comprises a vatting of seven hogsheads, distilled in
May 1967, and according to Stephen Bremner, Marketing and Sales Manager for
Tomatin distillery, ?With over four decades of experience at Tomatin, Douglas
Campbell knows our warehouse and casks better than anyone else. He has made a
superior selection in the 30 and 40 Years Old malts and we expect them to be
extremely popular with whisky enthusiasts in the UK and internationally.? The
nose is initially quite shy and retiring, gently floral, with emerging apples,
oranges and marzipan notes, plus a subtle whiff of background smoke. As with its
younger sibling, the addition of water arouses quite lively, fresh citrus
fruits. Smooth and sophisticated on the palate, with creamy toffee backed by
spice and just a suggestion of liquorice. Fairly long in the finish; more creamy
and less oaky than might be expected for its age. Only 1,614 bottles.
