Whisky Reviews for Mortlach 1988 BA

  1. St. Pauli scored this whisky 88 points Connoisseur

Very high quality, certainly. It's the style that many try to copy, but that only few do so with success. Good and integrated whiskies need time (and probably refill butts), and this is a perfect example.
    • Nose
The nose starts quite pungent, so better leave it for a while. Then it's still rather austere (I guess it's the sulphuric character of the spirit), but with gentle influence of the refill sherry cask (I guess it was at least a medium sweet sherry cask). There is plenty of red fruit, but certainly raisins in the nose. Further, orange, honey, leather, and polished oak.
    • Taste
Full-bodied, with a sweet attack, mixed with red fruit. Then, it gets quite rough without water, leaving a prickle. Yes, this is definitely syrupy, with enough raisins, prunes and dark forest fruits. Add some milk chocolate, coffee, leather, cinnamon and pepper, and this makes a heck of a palate.
    • Finish
Without water, it leaves a prickle in the throat. It gets less fruity, obviously more oaky (some bitterness shines through), malty and even a tad grassy. This doesn't mean that the fruit has vanished, It's still there, but just less dominating. So are the leather and coffee. With water, it doesn't change that much.

Why the hell are almost all sherried Mortlachs spoiled with sulphur - does Mortlach use every cask other distilleries turn down?  And then these strange off-notes when nosing, it reminds me of rotten wood and rotten fruits (oranges).

No, this is definitely not my cup of whisky, whoever likes it - have fun.  My tastebuds both in the nose and on the palate quit on this stuff...

  7. Berrysaki scored this whisky 89 points Expert Junior

    • Nose
A lot of vanilla and sweet candies. When you are used to the sweetness, wood, bay leaf and sherry are coming from the background to the foreground.
    • Taste
Mouth coating, fatty but raw. Oak, vanilla, bay leaf. I can't describe what flavour the bitterness is. Sherry influence is big. Some bitterness and some burnt tastes (re-charred?). More balanced than the nose.
    • Finish
Long finish, balance stays for a very long time.
