    Interesting, very neat malt; offers significantly more than the normal 12-year-old; is not necessarily cheap!
    • Nose
      flowery, floral and fruity (green apples, compote), malt;
    • Taste
      sweet fruity onset, increases in the mouth; Apple compote, grapes, cereals, malt, some seasoning (oak);
    • Finish
      short finish; vinous malting echoes;

    A nice dram and good value for money. I would not rush out to buy it but I am glad I tried it.
    • Nose
      Initial nose made me think this is a grain whisky. Then follows a scent of Jam, not too sweet though, a light red fruit dram. The nose gets stronger as you leave this to open up a while.
    • Taste
      Velvety. Nice, sweetness gives way to more savoury notes. Still jam but now maybe greengage or gooseberry. A drop of water opens up more fruit.
    • Finish
      Medium, dry then slightly sweet.

  4. Okto-Bull scored this whisky 82 points Expert Senior

    • Nose
      ripe to overripe fruits. Very sweet, while easily drifting into the artificial. The wine is also there. There is also a spicy component. Minimal smoke. The alcohol is imperceptible. All in all a very round thing in the nose.
    • Taste
      very soft. The seasoning is more pronounced here than in the nose. The wine also plays a bigger role. Despite the 40%, the alcohol builds up well over time and it gets peppery.
    • Finish
      Dark sweetness flashes. Medium long, spicy finish. An oak taste remains in the mouth.

    A good, unfortunately too tasty tasty everyday whisky
    • Nose
      clearly full-bodied sherry, winter spices, light pepper + chilli, candied oranges, some freshly mown grass
    • Taste
      very mild and balanced, full-bodied, sweet sherry, some dried dates
    • Finish
      short with peppery notes, some smoke

    Serge Valentin says:

    Royal Lochnagar 2000/2012 'Distiller's Edition' (40%, OB, batch #RL/00-12W)  This baby was finished in muscat wine. Which, frankly, is a little scary since muscat can be very pushy, but you never know... Colour: gold. Nose: we are, in truth, extremely close to the regular 12, despite a few whiffs of ripe apricots and mirabelles floating around. Hold on, those notes do indeed come a little more to the front after just ten seconds, but they never become vulgar, which was my main fear. Mouth: the muscat is a little more pronounced, there’s something slightly floral indeed, but also notes of tinned pineapples and honey. Also golden raisins. The background remains dry and ‘Lochnagary’, which gives you a wee impression of two-storey whisky. Finish: medium, on the same flavours. Bitter chocolate with a little marmalade. Comments: I’d say it’s in the very same league as the 12. It goes down well. SGP:561 - 79 points.

    For the sample, I thank Nethar. Something more about this whisky I read after the tasting, just like the impressions of my colleagues. Well, finishing after "muscat wine" I would not guess or even know, the acidity was really easy. It's not a bad whisky, but Dalwhinnie 1996 DE I liked more.
    • Nose
      Malt, honey, bitter chocolate, wood. A slight touch of warm spice and citrus peel. (84 b)
    • Taste
      On the tongue of malt honey with a little bit of acidity. Unfortunately, my body is so thin, it's a bit more tricky than I would like, it would probably add a little more volume, those 40% is no miracle. (82 b)

    A nice mellow dram, good for everyday dramming, but it won't set your world on fire.
    • Nose
      A floral start transforms into fruitier aromas. Mainly grapes, but also sweet oranges. Oh, and marzipan too. There's some licorice and light oak, along with wet grass. Overall a bit weak though.
    • Taste
      Quite sweet. Blackcurrant tea, figs and spices. Mainly black pepper. Some sugar and nuts. Fairy rich considering the low abv.
    • Finish
      Short and sweet.
